Chapter 51: Farewell to the Honorary Viscount Family

"...It can't be."

My Father... Lucas Ebern muttered in disbelief. Opening his eyes wide as if unable to believe it, he spoke with trembling lips.

"No, it's a lie... A failure like you..."

"Are you calling the heir to the Rosemary Marquis family a failure?"

"No, but...!"

"You can investigate. The engagement procedures have already been completed. The results will be apparent soon."

"...!"

Lucas realized that Rest's attitude wasn't fake. Collapsing from the sofa, he fell to the floor.

"Lies... Lies... Lies... Lies..."

In the corner of the room, Lisa sat on the floor, muttering the same words like a broken toy. Her eyes seemed to escape from the reality of what was happening in front of her.

(Their reactions are more intense than I thought... Do they find it that unbelievable for me to marry both of them?)

Or maybe, it was just the final blow?

Cedric, who was supposed to be their beloved son, had failed the entrance exam for the Royal Academy. The son they scorned as a failure had passed the exam and entered the academy where Cedric was supposed to go. Moreover, the sisters of the Marquis family they aimed for were now in Rest's hands.

The child they treated like a dog had taken everything they wanted from them.. Faced with this reversal, their hearts seemed to have completely broken.

(...This is enough.)

Rest sighed softly. There wasn't as much satisfaction as he had thought, but still, a refreshing feeling, as if shaking off the sediment that had clung to him for years, remained.

Finally, his fate with the Ebern Honorary Viscount family had come to an end. He had settled the four years of oppression, clearing away the regret of his neglected mother.

(Thinking about what they've done, this might not be enough for revenge, but... well, that's fine. I'll let it go at this.)

He didn't particularly want revenge, and he didn't have a hobby of kicking corpses. Let's end it here.

"Just to be clear... you've already transferred your parental rights, and I've come of age this year. I don't need your permission."

“…………….”

“...Lies... Lies...”

"So, there's no need for me to have any further dealings with you. Please be happy."

Although Rest wouldn't inherit the title of honorary viscount, it didn't mean the path to becoming a Viscount was closed. Cedric could retake the Royal Academy entrance exam next year to aim for a court magician. There were also other ways to achieve merit and be rewarded with a title.

(However... whichever method is chosen, it's no longer my concern.)

"Well then, I'm leaving. Excuse me."

"I'll see you off, Rest-dono."

The butler who had been waiting in the room took over from Lucas and led Rest. Passing through the door the butler opened, he walked down the corridor towards the entrance.

"...You've become splendid, Rest-dono."

Without looking back, the butler muttered softly.

"She..., I'm sure Chiffon is rejoicing in the shadows."

Chiffon is the name of Rest's deceased mother. This butler was a colleague of Rest's mother and had treated him kindly due to that connection.

"She was taken advantage of by the master, impregnated, and then driven out... Many servants were worried. Although I couldn't do anything in front of the master..."

"...It's fine. You provided me with meals and medicine, didn't you?"

"...To escape our own guilt. We couldn't stop you from being oppressed."

The butler continued speaking with a hint of sadness in his voice.

"We don’t mind if you hold it against us. Please, be happy in the Marquis family..."

"...That's too melodramatic, really. Instead of that, tell me what happened after I left the mansion."

Rest exchanged some casual words with the butler, asking him to rely on Rest if anything happened and to convey his gratitude to the servants who had taken care of him. After that, he left the Ebern Honorary Viscount family.

And so, he never returned to the mansion that had been like a birdcage for him.
