Chapter 354: Battle with the Catreya Family’s Third Son
Rest found himself facing Toya Catreya, the third son of the Marquis Catreya family, in a mock battle.
It wasn’t a duel to the death — more of a light-hearted spar meant to strengthen camaraderie.
(Still… this kind of tension feels like I’m about to say, “Please give me your sister’s hand in marriage.”)
“Hey, looks like Toya’s going to fight!”
“Who’s he up against?”
“You don’t know? That’s Count Rest Clover — the mage who took down the demon monster Sabnock!”
They stood about three meters apart, facing each other, while the surrounding knights and soldiers gathered, cheering and jeering for fun.
The mood was casual — after all, this was supposed to be a friendly event.
(The only ones taking this seriously… might be me and these brothers.)
“All right then—let’s go!”
Toya shouted the declaration and immediately began casting magic instead of charging in.
“【Stone Armor】【Hardening】!”
Two spells in rapid succession — Toya’s entire body was encased in stone armor.
The armor, reinforced with a hardening spell, probably rivaled steel in durability.
“This combo might’ve been broken by my beloved sister Mai Puppy, but hey, no sane brother fights his sister for real. You, on the other hand—‘boyfriend the divine thief,’ I can hit as hard as I want!”
“I get the feeling you just called me something with a lot of hidden meaning.”
“Divine thief” written but “sister’s boyfriend” read — Rest sighed internally at the sheer brotherly obsession before him, though he couldn’t help admiring Toya’s skill.
(A noble knight family, and yet his control is incredible… far from a brute.)
Anyone could coat themselves in stone, but doing so without immobilizing yourself or suffocating was another story.
Toya’s armor had breathing gaps and movable joints — a feat requiring precise magic control.
(That level of finesse… even most professional mages couldn’t pull that off.)
“Then let’s see how you handle this!”
Toya kicked off the ground with tremendous force — his massive, stone-clad body moved with startling speed, like a charging truck.
“【Body Strengthen】【Acceleration】!”
Rest responded with his own dual-cast, speeding up to evade the rush.
(He’s using strengthening magic too — no, that alone doesn’t explain that speed!)
A body that heavy shouldn’t move like that.
(So he’s lightening himself with magic too, huh? Some knight — he’s basically a battle mage!)
“Good reflexes! Then how about this?”
From Toya’s arm extended a two-meter-long stone spear, its head shaped like an axe blade.
The portion of armor missing from his body had reshaped into the weapon — clearly, this man was no amateur.
“Haah! Haah! Haah!”
Spinning the spear in sweeping arcs, Toya lunged again.
His attacks were fast and relentless, leaving little room to dodge.
“【Firewall】!”
Rest didn’t evade this time — he conjured a blazing wall of fire before Toya.
“Whoa—!?”
“I’m a mage. I have no obligation to meet you head-on.”
Toya skidded to a stop just before the flames — any closer and he’d have been roasted alive.
“【Fireball】!”
Countless fireballs appeared and pelted Toya like a relentless volley.
Even through armor, the heat seeped in; Toya grunted in pain.
“Damn it… you—!”
He swung his spear, batting away several fireballs. His technique was sharp — worthy of his noble lineage.
“Hot as hell! Cut it out already!”
“If you want me to stop, then come and make me… brother-in-law.”
“Don’t you dare call me that!”
As planned, Toya’s rage exploded.
“UOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHH!!”
“Whoa… scary…”
He charged straight through the firewall, enduring the searing flames with sheer willpower.
“You’ve got no right to call me brother-in-law!”
“So that’s what this is about, huh? 【Ice Bolt】.”
Rest leapt backward to dodge the thrust, then unleashed freezing magic.
“Ha! My hardened stone armor’s tougher than steel — like hell your little spell can—”
“—crack it, right?”
“Wha—!?”
The stone armor split with a sharp crack.
The rapid shift from extreme heat to cold caused thermal shock — expansion and contraction tore the armor apart.
“【Stone Bullet】!”
To finish it off, Rest fired stone projectiles that shattered the remaining armor.
As the fragments fell away, he noticed the armor’s insides weren’t solid — there were hollow gaps for mobility and weight reduction.
“So that’s how you made it lighter, huh?”
“Tch…!”
Toya cursed, swinging his half-broken spear in desperation.
“【High Acceleration】!”
Rest invoked an advanced speed spell, slipping under the strike and pressing his palm to Toya’s exposed abdomen.
“【Thunder Shock】!”
“Guh—!?”
The lightning spell hit at point-blank range, jolting Toya’s body.
He didn’t faint, but he dropped to one knee, spear clattering to the ground.
“Match over.”
“…Damn it…”
Rest declared victory. Toya growled in frustration, while cheers erupted from the surrounding soldiers — Rest had won the mock battle in decisive fashion.
