Chapter 328: The Forbidden Forest and the Ogura Sandwich

Rest and Urla continued their way through the Forbidden Forest.

They stepped carefully over the soft, decaying leaf litter, using magic to push aside branches and foliage as they advanced, one step at a time.

The dim, humid forest was so thick that seeing even a few meters ahead was difficult, and an indescribable eeriness hung in the air.

“Jararararararara!”

“Wind Blade!”

“Jara…!”

From above, a massive serpent lunged down at them, only to have its head sliced off in an instant.

They encountered monsters several times along the way, but thanks to Presence Detection, Rest always sensed them beforehand, preventing any surprise attacks.

He dispatched each monster methodically, one by one.

“I must have taken down quite a few monsters already… but still no sign of anything like a Diamond Bear…”

“Deeper.”

“Ah… so it lives deep in the forest. How did you manage to hunt the one that was presented to the royal palace before?”

“Just happened to appear.”

“So you caught one that just happened to come out of the forest, huh… guess that was lucky.”

“Gwoooooooooooooh!!”

“Yeah, yeah. Earth Wall.”

“Gwo…!”

An enormous boar monster charged at them, only to be blocked by a wall of earth.

While it was stopped in its tracks, Rest immediately followed up with another spell.

“Earth Spears.”

Several stone lances erupted from the ground, skewering the boar’s unprotected belly from below.

It died instantly, collapsing to the ground without a twitch.

“As expected.”

“Yeah, this much is nothing… We’ve been walking for over an hour now. You’re not tired? Want to take a break?”

“Mm. Break.”

“Alright, I’ll make us a spot.”

With magic, Rest cleared away the grass and packed the soil into a flat space large enough for the two of them to sit.
He then set up a monster-repelling barrier around them.

Maintaining the barrier continuously consumed magic power, but for Rest, whose magic was limitless, that wasn’t an issue.

“That should do it… Alright, let’s sit and rest.”

“Mm. Rest.”

“Mm…”

Rest sat on the cleared patch, but Urla sat right next to him—so close their shoulders touched.

“Urla… you’re a bit close.”

“Mm.”

When he tried to hint she should move away, she simply looked up at him from very close range.
Her direct gaze, filled with silent pressure, actually made him fluster instead.

“Uh… want some water?”

“Want.”

She took the canteen he offered and drank with small, audible gulps.

“Here.”

“Ah… thanks.”

“Indirect kiss.”

“…”

Rest deliberately drank from a different spot on the canteen’s rim.

“Boo… mean.”

“A-anyway… how much longer until we reach where the Diamond Bear is?”

He forcefully changed the subject.

Urla looked slightly displeased but pointed deeper into the forest.

“One hour.”

“So, one more hour… By the way, could we just fly over the forest instead?”

“No. Would scare it.”

“Scare the Diamond Bear so it runs away?”

“Nn… black one.”

“Ah, you mean that black monster from before?”

“…Yes.”

After an oddly long pause, she nodded.

“Black one gets startled. Not good. Attacks.”

“So if the black monster gets startled, it attacks… Yeah, best to avoid unnecessary fights.”

He didn’t know what exactly the “black monster” was, but their real goal was the Diamond Bear.
If it were something weak like that boar from earlier, it was fine—but there was no point risking his life against something unnecessarily strong.

“Sandwich.”

“Oh, thanks—wait, Ogura Sandwich?!”

Urla handed him a bento.
Inside was a sandwich filled with sweet red bean paste and butter.

“Favorite.”

“Ah… you like anko too, huh? I’m happy. Thanks…!”

“Shy.”

As Rest happily ate the Ogura Sandwich, Urla smiled with a mixture of joy and embarrassment.
