Chapter 311: I Got Hit With a Surprise

Having secured the wyvern meat, Rest now had the main dish for the party.

However… meat alone wasn’t enough.

That wasn’t necessarily his main goal, but to complete the ultimate full-course meal, he still needed a variety of ingredients.

“You’re heading to the capital, right? Then I’ll take the wyvern meat for you.”

Yuri beamed as she made the suggestion to Rest, who had decided to visit Celestine to gather information about alcohol.

As usual, she wore a confident expression, puffing out her chest — which was a bit bigger than other girls her age — with pride.

“The kind villagers arranged a carriage for us. The meat’s been properly frozen, so I can manage it on my own!”

“Ah—yeah. I see… that makes sense…”

Yuri’s offer was certainly helpful.

It would be a waste of time to haul the wyvern meat all the way to the Clover territory and then head to the capital.

Yuri wasn’t a child anymore. She might have a terrible sense of direction, but as long as the carriage driver knew the way, there shouldn’t be any issues.
This kind of errand should be well within her capabilities.

“So leave it to me! I’ll definitely deliver it without sneaking any bites… slurp”

“Yeah… now I’m starting to get worried.”

If anything, his concern was that Yuri might sneak a taste of the wyvern meat.

Was it really okay to entrust such valuable ingredients to this drooling, gluttonous girl?

What if she arrived at the Clover domain with the meat completely gone, forcing him to climb the mountain again?

“I-I’ll be fine! I swear I’ll prove I’m useful to you, Rest! I’m always causing trouble, so now’s my chance to show I’m a worthy wife!”

“Oh… so that’s what you were worried about…”

That came as a surprise.

Apparently, Yuri had been bothered by the fact that she constantly caused him trouble.

She had run away from home after kicking down her father and brother, after all.
Maybe she was afraid that if Rest rejected their engagement, she’d be sent back home as a nuisance.

“You don’t need to worry about that stuff… I mean, there are plenty of other things you probably should be more worried about.”

Like how to act more ladylike… or how to keep a reasonable distance from men.

In any case, Rest had no intention of sending Yuri back to the Marquis Catreya household.

He couldn’t say he was in love with her — their engagement had come about by circumstance —
but if asked whether he liked her or not, he could confidently say “yes.”

Just the thought of her ending up with another man left him uncomfortable. He did want her by his side going forward.

“Well, I do appreciate your desire to be helpful. Alright then, I’ll trust you with it.”

“Yeah! Leave it to me! I’ll absolutely deliver it without sneaking any bites!”

“Not just the bites — make sure you watch out for thieves too… I’m counting on you.”

And so, after that exchange, Rest left the wyvern meat in Yuri’s care and set out for the capital.

Using magic, he flew directly to the capital and stopped by the Rosemary Marquis family’s townhouse.
He’d sent word to the Crocus Duke’s household to inform them in advance and was waiting for a reply.

But to his surprise, the response came back immediately, saying they’d be happy to see him right away.

(I’d heard Celestine was super busy… but I got an appointment this easily? Weird…)

Puzzled, Rest made his way to the Crocus family estate.

“We’ve been expecting you.”

“Lady Celestine is waiting.”

Two maids greeted Rest upon arrival.

They bowed with impeccable poise — exactly what you’d expect from servants of a duke’s household.

“Um… sorry to drop in so suddenly. I brought a little something—”

“This way, please.”

“Right this way.”

Rest tried to offer the block of wyvern meat he’d brought as a gift, but the two maids gently — yet very firmly — ushered him inside.

Their behaviour was a bit forceful for servants who had such polished manners.

“U-uh…?”

Confused, Rest followed them down a hallway.

The corridor was lined with luxurious rugs and tasteful paintings, resembling an art museum more than a home.

“This is the room.”

“Go ahead. Please open the door.”

“O-okay…?”

They reached a room in the back of the mansion.

One of the maids nudged him toward the door, and Rest knocked hesitantly.

“You may enter.”

“Pardon me…?”

He received permission to enter and opened the door.

“Huh…?”

And then… he froze.

As if an ice spell had paralysed him.

“Ah, welcome. I must apologize… for greeting you in such an improper state.”

Inside the room stood Celestine Crocus — his friend, classmate, and fiancée.

She was in the middle of changing clothes.

Wearing nothing but black lace lingerie, Celestine looked at him with a soft, apologetic smile —
and Rest’s jaw dropped so far it might as well have hit the floor.
