Chapter 309: Dragon Liver

“I’m so sorry! I’m so sorry! I’m so sorry…!”

“It’s… really fine. You don’t have to apologize so much.”

Rest and Yuri had returned safely to the village at the foot of the southern mountain range, but they were being profusely apologized to by their guide, Ribery, who had fled.

According to her story, when she saw the wyvern appear, she immediately decided to retreat, leaving Rest and Yuri behind as she descended the mountain.
When Rest and Yuri didn’t come down, she assumed they had died.
The next day, a funeral ritual for those who died in the mountains was promptly held.

“I mean… isn’t that a bit too quick of a decision? You didn’t have to assume we were dead that fast.”

As for her fleeing… well, that part was fine.

They had agreed beforehand that she could retreat if things got dangerous.
Though her decision to abandon them did seem rather hasty, Alpha Mountain was known as a wyvern nest — if you didn’t act with that level of caution, you likely wouldn’t survive.

The timing of the funeral was also fast… maybe the villagers here are just really impatient?

“I’ll refund the guide fee… I truly am sorry.”

“No, really, it’s fine. I’m not angry, so don’t worry about it. More importantly, I’d like to arrange a wagon to transport the wyvern.”

Rest waved a hand to the deeply remorseful Ribery and made his request.

He and Yuri had carried the wyvern’s corpse this far by themselves, but there was no way they could do that all the way home.

Even if they could keep it floating with magic, they’d draw a lot of attention from passersby.

“Of course… Would you also like us to process the meat? I’ll include it for free, as a service.”

“No need to go that far…”

“It’s best to process it quickly. Even though you’ve kept it frozen with magic, ‘dragon liver’ spoils very fast.”

“Dragon liver…?”

It was a term Rest had never heard before, and he tilted his head in curiosity.

“Dragon liver is, quite literally, an internal organ found in dragons. It’s rich in magic power and said to be incredibly delicious. Some say eating it can even extend your lifespan. But it deteriorates quickly, even when salted, smoked, or preserved — it just doesn’t keep.”

“Wow… that’s a thing?”

“Yes. Because it can’t be preserved, it’s said that only those who personally slay a dragon get to eat it. It’s a rare privilege.”

“Rest, that sounds delicious! Since we’ve got the chance, let’s have them extract it!”

Yuri jumped in, visibly excited.

In that case, Rest agreed to let them handle the butchering.

“Alright then — we’ll leave it to you. But would it be alright if we watched the process?”

“Of course. Don’t worry, we won’t steal any of the materials.”

Ribery called a few villagers over, and they began butchering the wyvern.

With large machetes in hand, the villagers expertly took the beast apart.

“Okay, cut the meat into manageable sizes! Pack the scales in that bag!”

“Don’t waste the bones either. There’s not a single part of a dragon that’s useless!”

“Huh… this is actually kind of fascinating.”

As he watched, Rest commented with genuine interest.

It was a rare and impressive sight — almost like watching a live tuna-cutting show.
The villagers were clearly experienced: cutting the meat into transportable chunks and packing the frozen blood, organs, bones, and scales neatly into bottles and bags.

“This here is the dragon liver. It’s been about a day since the kill, so there’s been some deterioration… but it should still be edible.”

Eventually, Ribery handed them a dish of the internal organ.

It was raw sashimi, completely uncooked. Was this really safe to eat?

“There’s no poison. Please, help yourselves.”

“Rest, seems fine to me. I don’t smell any toxins.”

Yuri picked up a slice and sniffed it with her nose twitching.

When it came to food, Yuri’s instincts were spot on. If she said it was edible, then not only was it safe — it was likely delicious.

(Even if it’s poisonous, I know detox healing magic… might as well give it a try.)

“Thanks for the food.”

Rest brought a piece to his mouth.

The vibrant pink slice of meat landed on his tongue — and in the next instant, it melted apart.

“…!”

His heart thudded with a loud ba-dump.

It wasn’t about taste — good or bad. The texture was electric, like energy rushing through his bloodstream.

Though he had nothing to compare it to, it felt as if he’d eaten a mix of soft-shelled turtle meat and blood — filling his entire body with a sense of raw vitality.

“Whoa… this feels like it’s charging me up! I feel like I could sprint right now!”

“Dragon flesh is rumored to grant longevity and vitality… and this makes me believe it.”

“Oh? Hey Rest, you’re kind of leaning forward… is something wrong?”

“……”

Please understand, Rest thought silently.

It was simply another involuntary biological reaction, similar to what had happened with the worm meat earlier.

“Sheesh… I’m still underage, you know. Cut me some slack.”

If possible, Rest thought, this dragon liver should be reserved for a wedding night meal.

With firm resolve, he made up his mind: no matter what, he would not share a sleeping space with Yuri tonight.
