Chapter 308: Return to the Mountain’s Base
“Suuuyaa… suuyaa…” (snoring)
“…It’s morning.”
Rest and Yuri had successfully hunted a wyvern, but since night had already fallen, they decided to camp out for the night.
They hadn’t brought a tent — or rather, their guide Liberty had been the one carrying it. All Rest and Yuri had on them were minimal supplies like food and water.
Once again, Rest used magic to create a dome like a snow hut (kamakura), and the two huddled together inside it to sleep.
Nights in the mountains were cold, but with fire magic providing warmth without suffocating them, and Yuri’s naturally high body temperature acting like a hot water bottle, they were able to sleep without freezing.
“Munya munya… I can’t eat anymore…”
“Could your sleep-talking be any more cliché…? I can’t even move.”
Yuri had latched tightly onto Rest, clinging to him like a stuffed animal.
Soft and squishy sensations were pressing all over him, but the discomfort of being held in a submission hold outweighed any sense of pleasure.
“Yuri, Yuri! Wake up. It’s morning!”
“Munya munya…”
“Breakfast! Time for breakfast!”
“Breakfast!?”
At the mere mention of “breakfast,” Yuri sprang awake. What a simple girl.
“Good morning… now that you’re up, can you let go of me?”
“Hm? Oh, right. You were warm, Rest.”
“Glad to hear it.”
“By the way… I felt something hard in between your legs. Didn’t feel like bone. What was that…?”
“Forget it!!”
It was a perfectly normal male physiological reaction.
Rest’s face turned bright red as he shouted.
“More importantly… let’s just eat breakfast and get going! We’re heading down the mountain immediately!”
He said it bluntly, a bit sulky.
If they dawdled, they might run into another wyvern.
If they were caught transporting the corpse of a dead wyvern by its companions, there was a high risk of being attacked by the whole group.
(We might be able to fight them off… but there’s no point in killing several more if we can’t carry them back.)
“Something simple for breakfast, okay? Eat fast, and let’s break camp.”
When they stepped out of their dome shelter, they saw a mound of dirt nearby.
Rest dug it up to check — it was the wyvern corpse. They’d buried it to prevent other monsters from stealing it.
“Good, still safe. Just in case, I’ll recast the ice magic.”
After reapplying the freezing spell to prevent spoilage, they ate a simple breakfast and got ready to leave.
Together, Rest and Yuri began hauling the wyvern down the mountain.
Moving a five-ton beast was a serious task — but Rest was a talented mage, and Yuri possessed mysterious superhuman strength.
Rest used Levitation Magic to float the wyvern, then tied a rope to it for Yuri to pull.
“Heave-ho! Heave-ho!”
“You good? Want to take a break?”
“I’m fine. What about you, Rest? Using magic nonstop — you okay?”
“I’m alright… In fact, we should make it down quicker than the climb.”
Now that they had a known path, their descent was much faster.
They did run into a few monsters along the way, but they were all weak enough to be defeated in one blast of Rest’s magic.
Perhaps due to yesterday’s battle, no wyverns were seen flying today.
“Rest, I can see the base!”
“Yeah… That was tougher than I thought. These things really are ‘lesser dragons.’”
Fighting one or two wasn’t hard, but dealing with a clustered group in one place was a pain.
“With this, we’re good for the main meat dish, right…?”
“Do we still need other ingredients?”
“Well, the Rosemary Territory should have gathered a variety already, so it’s not essential… but fish, alcohol, or maybe some vegetables for appetizers would be nice too.”
They didn’t need a full gourmet manga-style course, but with time to spare, it wouldn’t hurt to collect more exotic flavours.
“I see… Oh, look — there’s the village.”
The village at the base of the mountain came into view.
It seemed they had successfully made it down safely.
“Alright… Let’s stop by the village, grab a bite to eat, and then head home—”
“Dear traveller, may your soul rest peacefully in heaven…”
“May your soul ascend to heaven…”
“…Huh?”
Rest blinked in confusion.
As he approached the village, he sensed something odd.
A crowd of villagers had gathered in the central plaza, fervently praying in unison.
“May those who lost their lives in the mountains be saved… May Rest and Yuri, who climbed the mountain, find peace in the afterlife…”
“May they find peace in the afterlife…”
Apparently… the village was holding a funeral.
At the altar in the plaza stood a pair of scarecrow-like figures — likely symbols of local deities, representing a man and a woman.
“Wait… are they holding our funeral?”
“Uuuu… I’m so sorry. If only I had stopped them, this wouldn’t have happened…”
Rest’s face twisted in disbelief.
It seemed that when someone dies in the mountains, this village performs such a farewell ritual.
Even Ribery was present, tears at the corners of her eyes as she prayed sincerely.
Rest thought about what to do… but they couldn’t just let this go on.
He and Yuri stepped forward to face the villagers.
“Uhh… so… we’re alive, okay?”
“HIIIAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!”
The moment the villagers saw their faces, a chorus of terrified screams erupted.
Everyone looked as if they’d just seen ghosts, and chaos broke out immediately.
