Chapter 303: The Bird Monster, and Then…?

“By the way… how far do we have to go to reach the wyvern?”

After finishing their break and resuming the climb, Rest asked their guide, Ribery.

Ribery, walking at the front and keeping an eye on her surroundings, answered without turning around.

“The wyvern’s habitat is near the summit of Mount Alpha.”

“Mount Alpha?”

“Yes, this very mountain. The Southern Mountain Range is made up of many peaks, each with its own name. Every mountain has its own monsters’ territory, and Mount Alpha is where the wyverns have their nests… Oh, watch your step there, it’s slippery.”

She continued her explanation while occasionally offering caution.

“Wyverns are especially adept at flying, even among monsters classified as pseudo-dragons. There are quite a few of them, and individually they aren’t extremely strong… but that’s only in comparison to true dragons. They’re still far beyond what an average warrior or mage could handle. Please, don’t do anything reckless.”

“Yeah, I know. If it gets dangerous, we’ll retreat — don’t worry.”

Rest wasn’t underestimating the wyverns… but they had already defeated monsters that were definitely stronger. He believed there was no need to be overly concerned — or at least, he wanted to believe that.

“So, the wyverns live on this mountain? Then I guess the other mountains have their own monsters too?”

Yuri asked cheerfully, twirling a skewer stick in her hands.

“Yes… for example, the neighboring Mount Beta has a den of large wolves. Mount Gamma has monkey-like monsters, and Mount Delta is ruled by a giant frog monster.”

“Out of those, the frog sounds the tastiest! Hey Rest, if we have time, want to go there too?”

“…Let’s not do that today.”

He had no intention of letting her eat only strange creatures. Once they hunted the wyvern, they’d already have their hands full. Now wasn’t the time to chase extra ingredients — so he flatly refused.

“Oh, Rest. More monsters incoming.”

“JYAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!”

A shrill, grating cry echoed as a bird-like monster appeared.

It had vibrant, gaudy feathers and approached quickly by hopping along the rocky ground rather than flying.

“That’s a big bird… its wings seem underdeveloped, kind of like a chicken or ostrich. Guess it uses its legs more?”

“Looks tasty. Should we eat it too?”

Rest and Yuri prepared to fight.

The bird monster, standing around two meters tall, dashed nimbly over the rocky terrain and launched a flying kick with its strong legs.

“[Earth Wall]!”

A wall of earth rose from the ground, absorbing the monster’s kick.

Bounced back, the bird tried to regain balance and attack again — but Yuri was faster. She spun and delivered a powerful kick to its torso.

“Ei!”

“JYAH!?”

With a short squawk, the bird monster was sent tumbling across the rocky surface.

It had taken a solid hit… and yet, it stood up almost immediately and glared at them with burning eyes.

“JYAAAAAAAAAAHHH!!”

“Whoa… pretty tough, huh.”

Yuri’s kicks were strong enough to pulverize a human skull.

The fact that this monster took a direct hit and still moved — it was clearly no lightweight.

“It might be stronger than it looks… Don’t let your guard down, Yuri!”

“Of course not! Tonight’s dinner is—”

Just as they were about to continue the hunt, a massive shadow loomed overhead.

At the same moment, Rest’s [Presence Detection] spell reacted — a monster was above them.

“Get down!”

“Take cover!”

“Hyaah…!”

Ribery shouted as Rest pushed Yuri to the ground and cast an [Earth Wall] to conceal and shield them.

“JYAAAAAH!?”

“GYAAH! GYAAH!”

A huge monster landed in front of them.

It had a lizard-like body, but its wings were like a bat’s — a dragon-like creature spreading its powerful limbs wide.

“A wyvern…!”

It was about five meters long — this was definitely a wyvern.

With its fierce jaws, it bit down on the bird monster and flew off into the sky.

The entire event was over in seconds. The thought of being the target of that attack was enough to send a chill down one’s spine.

“So that’s a dragon-type for you… Quite the pressure.”

It radiated the same fearsome presence as monsters like worms and sea serpents.

He didn’t believe they’d lose — but it was definitely not an opponent to take lightly.

Rest dispelled the magic and crawled out from the earth wall.

“That was intense, Rest!”

“Yeah. As expected of the mountain’s ruler… Now, where is its nest—… huh?”

He turned to check on Ribery… but she was gone.

Looking around, she was nowhere in sight.

“…Don’t tell me… she ran away?”

It seemed Ribery had fled.

They had agreed beforehand she could retreat if things got dangerous… but she had decided far too quickly — they hadn’t even started fighting yet.

“Rest, the guide ran off on us.”

“…Yeah.”

Left behind on the mountain slope, Rest could only stare up at the sky in exasperation.
