Chapter 302: The Climb Begins

“[Flame Cannon]!”

“Ei! Yah!”

Monsters began attacking the party as soon as they stepped into the mountain.

Rest shot down a winged snake-like monster with magic, and Yuri crushed its head with a kick as it fell.

The southern mountain range was a marble-like mix of bare rocky surfaces, dense forests, and snow-covered peaks. Because different monsters inhabited each of these zones, the party had to battle a wide variety of creatures.

“This place never gets boring. It’s educational.”

A mediocre magician would probably struggle here… but for Rest, it wasn’t a problem.

Rest had an infinite supply of magical power, allowing him to cast spells endlessly. Thanks to his ability to copy spells, he also had access to a wide variety of magic. No matter what kind of monster appeared, he could cast the perfect spell to counter it.

As for Yuri… she simply relied on her innate physical prowess and instincts.

Whether it was a yeti-like monkey, a giant bird, or a massive mole bursting from underground, she could take them down effortlessly.

“This reminds me of when the madam forced me into training with all those impossible demands… well, compared to that, this is still better.”

Rest chuckled wryly, recalling his days of training before he entered the academy.

Meanwhile, Yuri held up the recently defeated winged snake with a delighted smile.

“Rest! I think we can eat this snake! Let’s take a break!”

She was still as fond of bizarre food as ever.

Without waiting for a reply, she pulled out a knife and quickly began to butcher it.

She skinned it, removed the organs, and expertly chopped it into manageable pieces — all while getting splattered with blood, completely unfazed.

By the way, the roast rock lizard they had brought for lunch had long since been eaten. Rest had only taken a bite or two — Yuri had devoured the rest.

“Your cooking skills have really improved.”

“You noticed? I got a lot of lessons from Primula and the chefs at House Rosemary! I wonder… maybe I should serve this snake as sashimi?”

“Please, spare me… at least cook it first.”

“Got it. Let’s grill it on skewers, then. Can you start a fire?”

“Understood.”

Rest gathered some nearby branches and lit them with magic.

Yuri skewered the snake meat and held it over the campfire.

“……”

Watching this all unfold so casually, their mountain guide Liberry stood speechless in disbelief.

“Is something wrong?”

“No, it’s just… you were serious about taking down a wyvern, huh?”

“…You thought I was joking?”

“N-No, not exactly, it’s just…”

Ribery trailed off.

She was clearly flustered — likely from witnessing Rest and Yuri’s capabilities firsthand.

At first, she had assumed they were overestimating themselves, recklessly attempting to challenge a wyvern.

However… now that she had seen them effortlessly take down the mountain’s monsters, she realized their goal might not be so unreasonable after all.

“Guide lady, want some too? It’s cooked perfectly!”

Yuri held up a freshly grilled skewer of snake meat.

Regrettably… it did look quite delicious. The fat was sizzling, and the aroma was mouthwatering.

“Here, Rest! You can have some too!”

“…Thanks.”

Yuri practically shoved the skewer into his hands.

With a slightly pained expression, Rest accepted it.

“……”

Yuri stared at him intently — clearly expecting something.

Reluctantly, he brought it to his mouth… and a burst of umami spread across his tongue.

“…It’s good.”

The seasoning was just a light sprinkle of salt — and yet, it was remarkably tasty.

If someone served it without explanation, he might’ve mistaken it for yakitori.

“Great! Okay, miss guide, you have some too!”

“…Alright then.”

Yuri handed Ribery a skewer as well, and she too began eating it with visible enjoyment.

Though she had an eccentric taste for unusual ingredients, Yuri’s sense of flavor never missed the mark.

And so, the three of them enjoyed a short, well-earned break — dining on monster meat in the heart of the mountains.
