Chapter 301: The Southern Mountain Range

The very next day, Rest set out for the southern mountain range.

A vast chain of mountains stretched out before him, the view from the foothills already majestic. Some of the peaks pierced through the clouds, their summits snow-capped and gleaming.

“This is… incredible. Far beyond what I imagined.”

It was like the Himalayas.

Though, of course, Rest had never actually seen them in his previous life.

“Ah, it’s been a while since I came here. Still just as beautiful as ever.”

Yuri, who had come along, peeked up at Rest’s face.

“Leave it to me—I’ll be your guide! You can relax, you’re in good hands!”

“…Yeah, no thanks.”

Rest shook his head.

Yuri was grinning from ear to ear, clearly thrilled about the mountain hike—but Rest had absolutely no intention of relying on her.

With her legendary sense of direction, trusting Yuri as a guide was less like boarding a sturdy ship and more like hopping into a sinking one. He could already see their shared future: getting lost together.

“I found a guide in the village at the foot of the mountain. We’ll follow her lead.”

“Thank you for entrusting me. I’m your guide, Ribery.”

The guide, a woman hired from the village, bowed politely.

Several such guides worked in the mountains near the foothills, and mountain guiding had become a business in its own right.

Some people, trying to save money, attempted to enter the mountains without a guide… but about 20% of them ended up missing due to getting lost.

“The mountains are easy to get lost in, and they’re filled with monsters. Please refrain from acting on your own.”

Ribery appeared to be in her mid-20s.
Her brown hair reached her shoulders, and her skin was tanned a healthy brown—likely from frequent sun exposure in the mountains.

Incidentally, Rest and Yuri hadn’t told her that they were nobles. Being treated stiffly would’ve only been a hassle.

“Now, just to confirm… Your goal is monster hunting—specifically, to take down a wyvern. Is that correct?”

“Yeah, that’s right.”

“Yep, that’s it.”

“…Forgive my bluntness, but do you actually have the ability to take down a wyvern?”

Ribery asked with a probing tone.

It was a fair question.

Rest and Yuri were both teenagers, and on top of that, appeared to be unarmed.

Wyverns were a subspecies of dragons—powerful monsters.
To the average eye, the two of them probably looked like reckless kids throwing themselves into danger.

“I’m a mage, so it’ll be fine. As for her… well, don’t worry about it.”

“Yeah! We’re strong!”

“……”

Ribery frowned even more at their overly casual responses.

Clearly, she thought they were just some foolhardy daredevils.

“Sigh… Well, I’ve already been paid in advance, so I’ll guide you. But I won’t participate in any fighting. No matter what happens, you’re on your own, understood?”

She said firmly.

After they explained their goal of wyvern hunting, she repeatedly emphasized the dangers involved.

She hadn’t refused to guide them—but she made them sign a contract declaring that she bore no responsibility if they were injured or killed.

(Well… can’t blame her. Honestly, if I were in her shoes, I’d think this was reckless too. We’re just kids, and Yuri’s completely lacking in tension…)

“Yeah, I understand. If anything happens, feel free to abandon us and run.”

“…If you’re that aware, then I’ll guide you. But if you want to live, you’d better listen to what I say.”

“Got it! Oh, right—I packed lunch! I made roasted rock lizard, your favorite!”

“I never said that was my favorite… and once again, you brought back some weird monster meat…”

“…………”

Hearing their lighthearted banter, Ribery’s face once again twisted into a bitter, uneasy grimace.
