Chapter 266: It’s a Date (Viola Arc) — Part 4

“Hey, you two.”

“…Huh?”

When Rest called out, the two men — their faces flushed red with rage — turned toward him.

Suppressing the urge to shout back, Rest kept his voice as calm as possible.

“That bottle came flying from your table. If it had hit us, someone could’ve gotten hurt.”

It was a perfectly reasonable statement, but the men’s response was nothing but coarse yelling.

“Shut the hell up! Can’t you see we’ve got bigger things to deal with?!”

“Stay out of this, kid! Don’t stick your nose into grown-up business!”

“If you fancy yourselves adults, maybe try acting the part? If you want to fight, do it somewhere you won’t bother everyone else.”

Rest pressed them further with plain logic — but the men only grew more heated, raising their voices even higher.

“Shut it! If you’ve got a problem, you can leave!”

“We’re having an important conversation here! Get in the way and I’ll kill you first!”

“Eeeeek, stop it! Don’t fight over me, all three of you! Stooop!”

Amidst the men’s shouting, the woman chimed in with her out-of-place wailing.

It was irritating enough to watch the men bicker, but somehow this woman was even more infuriating.

“…Bow your heads and apologize. I’ll let it go if you do.”

Rest narrowed his eyes, giving them a final warning.

Their answer wasn’t words — it was clenched fists.

“Rrahh!”

One of the men lunged forward, throwing a punch.

Though his footing was unsteady, likely from drinking, his punch was surprisingly sharp.

“[Fortify].”

Rest didn’t bother dodging. Instead, he reinforced his body with magic and took the punch square on his forehead.

A sharp, metallic clang rang out — like a fist striking iron.

The man who threw the punch immediately recoiled, clutching his hand in agony.

“GAAAAAAHHHHH! I-it’s like hitting a damn rock!!”

His fist had swollen grotesquely, his fingers bent at unnatural angles. It was clearly broken. Just watching was enough to make someone wince.

“Y-You little brat… what kind of skull do you have?!”

“You bastard! You’ll pay for that!”

The other man grabbed another bottle, raising it high to strike Rest.

(You two were just fighting each other. Now you’re teaming up? Are you enemies or allies?)

“Getting my clothes stained with booze would be annoying.”

It wouldn’t have hurt much, but Rest casually stepped aside to dodge the swing.

And as they passed each other, he delivered a sharp backhand to the man’s face.

“Gah…!”

The blow landed cleanly on the man’s nose, breaking it. He collapsed to the floor, groaning in pain. There was no way he’d be getting up anytime soon.

“Ugh… damn it…”

“Gahhh…”

“Let this be a lesson: next time you start a fight, pick the right time and place. Don’t cause trouble for others.”

With that parting shot, Rest turned to return to his table.

But just then, the woman who’d been sandwiched between the two men suddenly let out a bright, dramatic cry.

“Thank you so much! You saved meee!”

“…Huh?”

“I was so scared! These men were harassing me! Thank you, truly!”

The woman — probably in her mid-twenties, dressed in a low-cut dress — came running toward Rest.

With her hands raised slightly and her body swaying side to side to exaggerate her bouncing chest, she tried to throw herself into Rest’s arms.

“My name’s Meliana, and— KYAaaaaaaaaa!?”

“[Fireball].”

Just as she was about to embrace him, a fireball came flying from an unexpected angle and struck her square in the head.

Her hair burst into flames with a loud whoosh.

Panicking, she dropped to the floor and began rolling around, desperately trying to extinguish the fire.

“That was a close one, Rest.”

“…Viola.”

It was Viola who had launched the fireball.

Wearing a calm, satisfied smile, she casually walked over to Rest’s side.

“She almost got her claws into you. Glad I stopped it in time.”

“…”

Rest knew exactly what Viola meant.

A shady woman had tried to latch onto him, and Viola had dealt with it — plain and simple.

(…But fire? Wasn’t that a bit extreme?)

While he wasn’t particularly concerned about the woman, who was still rolling around on the floor, the sheer ruthlessness of it gave him a twinge of fear.

“If it’s a proper concubine or mistress, I don’t mind. But affairs? Absolutely not! That would just throw the whole household into chaos.”

“…I see.”

Rest couldn’t help but wonder what the real difference was.

With that thought lingering, he stood next to Viola, looking down at the woman, who was now being doused with water from a bucket by the staff.
