Chapter 249: Searching for the Monster on the Sea

“Now then… what should I do?”

Floating in the sky, Rest pondered in frustration.

Below him stretched the vast blue ocean. The intermittent sound of waves echoed around him, and seabirds soared above.

The weather was good, but the season had already turned cold. A chilly wind brushed against Rest’s body, and without the protective layer of air he had conjured with magic, he would have been freezing.

“As expected… the sea is vast. Searching for a single monster here is going to be a hassle…”

Even if the monster was enormous, the ocean was far more expansive.

For over two hours, he had been using [Presence Detection] magic to search, yet he had not sensed any sign of the creature.

(If it’s lurking on the seabed, my [Presence Detection] might not even reach it…)

He recalled a nature documentary from his previous life, where filmmakers chased after whales to capture footage. Right now, he felt much like them.

However, unlike the documentary team, he was searching alone, making the effort even more demanding.

(If only it would spout water like a whale, it would be easy to spot… but is that monster a lung-breather or a gill-breather?)

If it were a marine mammal like a whale, orca, or dolphin, it would need to surface for air.

But if it were a gill-breathing creature like a fish, it could remain submerged indefinitely and never rise to the surface.

(From what I saw… it looked like a gigantic serpent. Or perhaps, a ‘dragon.’)

A long, scaled body with fins.

Though he hadn’t seen its full form, its appearance strongly resembled an Eastern dragon.

“A sea serpent… a sea dragon, huh?”

Rest retrieved information about a certain monster from his memory.

The sea serpent was a legendary creature, considered one of the strongest marine monsters alongside the kraken.

It was believed to be a subspecies of dragon, though its true classification remained uncertain.

Sightings were rare, and records of successful hunts were even scarcer. Almost no documented cases of slaying a sea serpent existed, making reliable information about them extremely limited.

(The ocean was full of mysteries even in my past world, with so much left unknown… so it’s no surprise that even less is understood in this one.)

Searching for the monster.

Defeating the monster.

Neither goal seemed any closer.

He needed a way to slay the creature without affecting the fishing village or allowing it to escape like last time, yet he couldn’t think of a suitable spell.

Even with an infinite supply of magic, he was beginning to realize just how small and powerless he truly was.

(That being said… whining won’t help. I just have to do whatever I can.)

“GAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!”

As he lowered his altitude closer to the ocean’s surface, a massive shadow burst from the sea.

But it wasn’t the monster he was after.

It was much smaller—about the size of an elephant.

A shark-like monster with a single horn on its head leapt towards Rest, attempting to bite him mid-air.

“[Wind Blade].”

“Guh—”

Already aware of its presence, Rest easily dodged the beast’s fangs and retaliated with a swift spell.

A razor-sharp gust of wind sliced through the one-horned shark’s head, severing it cleanly. Blood dyed the ocean surface red.

“Well, this makes for a nice souvenir. Looks like a pretty hefty catch.”

Rest collected the monster’s body.

If this was some species of shark, it was probably edible.

Shark meat was commonly used for things like shark fin soup and kamaboko (fish cake).

Although he had never eaten it himself, he had heard it could be prepared as fried fish, stewed, or even as sashimi.

“Hm?”

Just as he was about to return to the fishing village with his catch, multiple signals registered on his detection magic.

A mix of large and small presences. Their sizes were similar to the one-horned shark he had just slain.

“GAH!”

“GAAAHHHHHH!”

A group of one-horned sharks emerged.

For a moment, Rest thought they might have come seeking revenge for their fallen kin… but instead, they were viciously tearing into the severed shark’s remains, fighting over the fresh meat.

“Ugh… they’re cannibalistic…”

It seemed the scent of blood had drawn them in.

He had heard that sharks were highly sensitive to the smell of blood, and now he had firsthand proof.

“Well, whatever… I might as well bring a few more back.”

Frowning at the gruesome sight, Rest decided to take advantage of the situation.

With another wave of his hand, he unleashed more wind blades, decapitating another one-horned shark. Blood once again stained the sea.

The fishing village had been struggling for food due to the monster’s presence preventing them from going out to sea.

But with this, they should be able to get by for a while.

Celestine was working on securing additional supplies as well, so no one would have to go hungry.
