Chapter 244: The Sea Monster

“Rest-san? Are you sure about this?”

Celestine looked slightly surprised at Rest’s suggestion to exterminate the monster.

“You are a landowner, not a lord. You have no obligation to do such a thing…”

“Well… I just figured, why not?”

Rest scratched his head lightly and shrugged.

“From what we’ve heard, it doesn’t seem like the lord is going to do anything for the village… and ignoring it would leave a bad taste in my mouth. I wouldn’t be able to enjoy the hot springs in peace.”

He had planned to stay in the village for another two or three days to relax in the hot springs. But if he abandoned the villagers—if he ignored the crying child—he wouldn’t be able to fully enjoy his time.

“Besides… I wouldn’t want to lose out on that fish dish. The sashimi was delicious.”

If the fishing industry collapsed, it would be a problem.

He wouldn’t be able to eat that delicious sashimi again.

(It’s not that I’m being sentimental… I just want to eat good food. This isn’t for Shouko or anything…)

He didn’t even know who he was trying to justify himself to, but he made the excuse in his head regardless.

“If Rest-san is willing to go that far, then I will also do what I can to help.”

“I appreciate it, but… Celestine, you don’t really have a reason to get involved either, do you?”

“Not at all. This village seems to have untapped business opportunities. My involvement is purely for profit.”

Celestine had her own reasons for valuing this fishing village.

Even though they were on vacation, Rest and Celestine found themselves working again.

In the end… they were both workaholics.

Rest had been a struggling student in his past life, juggling multiple part-time jobs. After reincarnation, he had devoted himself to studying, training in magic, and fulfilling his noble duties.

Celestine, as the daughter of a duke, had spent her childhood immersed in academics and countless lessons. As an adult, her life had been filled with work.

Neither of them were the type to simply enjoy a vacation.

“Well then, if you have any other information about the monster, I’d like to hear it.”

“Um… well…”

Rest and Celestine listened to the little girl, her mother, and the surrounding villagers.

No one had seen the monster clearly, but it was believed to resemble a giant shark or a sea serpent.

It was much larger than a fishing boat, and merely swimming caused waves strong enough to capsize vessels.

It didn’t seem to attack humans deliberately… but just by moving through the waters, it was causing harm to the fishermen.

“So it’s not actively hunting humans… It’s not like a man-eating shark, then?”

The image that popped into Rest’s head was that of an orca or a whale.

In his previous world, orcas—often called the “gangsters of the sea”—were considered the strongest marine creatures. Yet, they rarely attacked humans.

Compared to seals, humans had less fat and weren’t as tasty. Plus, orcas seemed to understand that attacking humans led to extermination.

Of course, there had been cases where they attacked by mistake or out of playfulness, resulting in fatal accidents.

Similarly, whales did not prey on humans. They primarily ate small fish and squid, and even when they accidentally swallowed divers or fishermen, they usually spit them out right away.

“It’s possible that it’s simply drawn to the fish the fishermen are catching.”

Celestine suggested.

“Still… we can’t just ignore it. There have already been injuries.”

Regardless of whether the monster had malicious intent, it was causing harm to humans.

And Rest was on the side of humanity.

Between marine monsters and people, his priority was to protect the latter.

“By the way… do you know when or where the monster typically appears?”

“Hmm… Not really…”

A villager frowned and shook his head.

“The attacks happen at different times. The monster appears more frequently further offshore, so we’ve been trying to fish closer to the village…”

“Uwaaaaaaahhhhhh!”

A sudden scream interrupted their conversation.

Rest and Celestine immediately turned toward the source.

On a fishing boat floating in the sea, fishermen were in a panic.

“It’s here! The monster is here!”

“Bring the boat back! It’ll flip us over again!”

“Lucky or unlucky… Looks like we got an immediate appearance.”

Rest kicked off the ground and leapt into the air, using magic to fly toward the sea.
