Chapter 211: Completely Overdid It

Amidst the roaring flames, Rest let out a desperate scream.

UOOOOOOOOOOOOOAHHHHHH!

The colossal explosion, born from within the Elder Worm, painted the swamp in searing red.

The blazing inferno swallowed everything in sight.

Encasing himself entirely in a protective barrier spell, Rest fought against the raging flames.

(This is bad! Way too much firepower!)

The excessive energy made Rest panic.

His barrier was hungrily consuming his magic energy, forcing him to pour in a constant, massive supply.

Without it, the barrier would have shattered instantly, reducing him to nothing but ash.

The flames, unleashed from within the Elder Worm, engulfed the entire area… but eventually dissipated.

“… …”

Rest wasn’t sure how much time had passed—seconds, minutes?—but he’d managed to endure it.

When he came to, he found himself rolling across the ground, still encased in his barrier.

“Whoa…”

No, it wasn’t a swamp anymore.

The once-muddy terrain had dried completely, the moisture evaporated by the intense heat, leaving behind a parched, barren land.

“Where’s the Worm…? Did I get it?”

Hovering upward with magic, Rest surveyed the destruction below.

And then he saw it.

The Elder Worm lay dead.

Half of its mountain-like body was obliterated, while the remaining half was a grotesque mass of charred flesh, buried in the scorched earth.

Not even the resilient vitality of its species could withstand this.

“… …”

He had won.

It was a victory.

Yet, a hollow emptiness filled Rest’s chest.

(Did I… overdo it? Yeah, I definitely overdid it…)

In hindsight, he couldn’t understand why he’d been so exhilarated.

Sure, it might have been the energy-boosting food messing with his head, but this was far beyond acceptable.

The thought of using such power against humans sent chills down his spine.

If he’d unleashed that attack in a small town, it would’ve been wiped off the map.

“Maybe… no, not maybe—definitely—I’ve created something terrifying here…”

The idea of this magic falling into the wrong hands horrified him.

If used in conflicts between humans, it could redefine the very nature of war.

Just as firearms transformed battlefields or nuclear weapons reshaped international relations, this spell could lead to unimaginable bloodshed.

“This is bad… really bad. I don’t know how exactly, but… this is seriously bad…”

“Why is it bad?”

“Huh?”

The question came so naturally that Rest almost answered reflexively.

Then, realizing the abnormality, he whipped around in shock.

“What is it that you find so bad, boy?”

A man stood there.

Like Rest, he floated in midair, supported by flight magic.

“Who are you?!”

Rest instinctively adopted a defensive stance, wary of the stranger.

Flight magic, while advanced, wasn’t unheard of. There were others capable of using it.

But what terrified him was that he hadn’t noticed this man’s presence until he was spoken to.

(This guy’s using magic… so how didn’t I sense him?)

Rest constantly kept a Presence Detection spell active.

This spell allowed him to sense the magic energy of living beings—be they humans, animals, or monsters.

The only exceptions would be those who could conceal their magic somehow.

(But that’s supposed to be impossible! You can’t hide magic energy while using magic!)

For instance, someone could conceal their magic and hide physically behind cover—that was feasible. Rest could do that if he tried.

But to actively use magic while suppressing all detectable magic energy? That was another story.

(Could it be… some kind of barrier magic that suppresses magic energy? No… would that even allow him to keep flying? Or maybe a spell that specifically nullifies detection magic?)

“‘Who am I,’ you ask? That is precisely what I would like to know about you.”

The man spoke calmly, meeting Rest’s wary gaze.

He was dressed in a gray robe, with long, flowing white hair.

At a glance, he seemed youthful, but there was an ageless quality to his appearance that made it difficult to determine his age.

“My name is Leonardo Gascoigne. I am the head of the Council of Sages.”

“The Council of Sages…?!”

Rest’s eyes widened in shock at the man’s response.

Leonardo’s expression remained composed as he continued in an even tone.

“Now it is your turn to introduce yourself. Which side are you on, boy…or should I say, reincarnated one?”

“…!”

At Leonardo Gascoigne’s words, Rest’s eyes widened for an entirely different reason.
