Chapter 177: The Questions of Certain Guards

“Hachoo… Ah, it’s getting chilly.”

One of the guards muttered.

“It’s been getting colder lately…”

Another responded.

While Rest was receiving shocking news from Celestine, a few individuals stood outside the cottage, sniffling and complaining. There were six men in total. Despite their grumbling, their eyes were all fixed straight on the cottage. These men were mages and soldiers serving different noble families.

Each pair came from a different household: one from the Rosemary Marquis family, another from the Crocus Duke family, and the last from the Catreya Marquis family. They served as guards—or perhaps watchers—assigned to the Rosemary sisters, Yuri and Celestine.

The Rosemary sisters and Yuri came from Marquis families while Celestine was the daughter of a Duke. Naturally, their social rank didn’t permit them to walk around without guards. Although Rest was present, he couldn’t stay with them every moment of the day so their families had discreetly sent guards to watch over them.

“Um… Is this your first time here?”

One guard asked.

“Ah, yes. I’m from the Crocus Duke family.”

“Never expected Lady Celestine to be in a place like this… Oh, and I’m with the Catreya Marquis family, watching over Lady Yuri.”

“Watching? Not guarding?”

The Crocus guard asked.

“Well… Technically I’m her guard too but I’m not sure how necessary that is.”

The Catreya guard chuckled wryly.

Their watch target Yuri, was immensely strong—far stronger than any of the guards present. Until recently, she had been confined to the Catreya Marquis estate but escaped by overpowering the guards during the master’s absence.

Afterward, Yuri joined Rest in developing the plains. However, with the second prince, Andrew overseeing the development, it wasn’t possible to forcibly take her back. Marquis Catreya reluctantly settled on merely assigning guards to monitor her.

“Still… it’s impressive isn’t it? To think that so many people are gathered in this small cottage.”

One of the soldiers said, his tone a mix of admiration and bewilderment.

Inside the cottage were the noble daughters from the Rosemary, Catreya, and Crocus families. It was rare for so many individuals to gather in such a newly established pioneer village, rather than in the capital’s academy.

“And at the center of all this… there’s Rest Clover, the young Count.”

One of them muttered.

“Who is he really? They say he’s from a commoner background…”

“He’s favored by the lady of the house. Even the master for all his grumbling, seems fond of him.”

The guards all spoke in turn each tilting their heads in curiosity. Despite being a commoner, Rest had been ennobled as an Count in his teenage years and was now surrounded by some of the kingdom’s most distinguished noblewomen. The more they thought about it, the more of a mystery he seemed.

“Apparently, his father is a court magician, though they’re estranged.”

“He supposedly saved Lady Viola and Lady Primula from a crisis… I don’t know the details though.”

“And how did he even meet Lady Yuri? They seem too close for just classmates…”

“He also seems to be on good terms with Lady Celestine… Well for someone who became a Count in one generation, I can see why they’d take an interest in him.”

As the guards chatted, they continued to discuss Rest Clover. Yet inevitably, their conversation shifted to a question that was on everyone’s mind.

“So… what is that?”

One of them finally asked.

“Yeah… What is that thing?”

“No, I know who it is, but…”

“Yeah, why is she here?”

The guards shifted their gazes toward the shadow of a building a little distance away.

“Haa… haa… huff, huff…”

There stood a small girl. She had short bob-cut purple hair and a sleepy yet intense gaze fixed on the cottage where Rest and the others were staying. Beside her stood a woman, likely her attendant standing perfectly still. When their eyes met with the guards, the woman gave a polite bow.

“Um… is it true that the young lady over there is the daughter of Margrave of Lavender?”

“…It’s true. We’ve already confirmed her identity.”

In response to the soldier from Duke Crocus’ household, the mage from Marquis Rosemary household answered.

The one intently watching Rest’s cottage from the shadows was Urla Lavender, the daughter of the great Eastern noble family, Margrave Lavender. She had been coming here every day for some time, hiding in the shadows and staring at the cottage.

Naturally the guards found this suspicious and approached her. They confirmed her identity as the daughter of Margrave Lavender. However, knowing her rank and status, they couldn’t just tell her to leave so they decided to leave her be.

“Lady Viola and Lady Primula said it’s fine as long as she doesn’t do anything.”

“Yeah! whenever we try to talk to her, she runs away immediately.”

“Given who she is, we can’t be too forceful… Well, all she’s doing is watching from the shadows.”

“I-I see…”

Hearing the four in front of them, the two soldiers from Duke Crocus’ household exchanged glances.

What exactly is going on here? After the Rosemary, Catreya, and Crocus houses, now even the daughter of Margrave Lavender shows up…

(Rest Clover… Who in the world are you?)

That was the shared question lingering in the hearts of everyone present.
