Chapter 162: Eating at the Camp

After reporting to the second prince, Andrew, Rest headed toward his assigned tent.

As a Count, Rest was given a fairly large tent, which included a bed, table, and chairs.

(It feels a bit like glamping… This isn’t bad once in a while.)

Since the tent was near Andrew’s, soldiers patrolled the area, ensuring safety wasn’t an issue. If he requested it, meals would be prepared in no time, promising a comfortable camping experience.

“Ah, Rest! Welcome back!”

“Well done, Rest-sam!”

“Viola, Primula… Why are you here?”

Waiting for him in front of the tent, seated on simple chairs, were Viola Rosemary and Primula Rosemary, the Rosemary sisters, and Rest’s fiancées.

“We came to support you. Though… Father didn’t allow us to join the actual pioneering work.”

“He did grant us permission to come and help with things like taking care of you.”

“Ah, I see…”

“I’m here too,Rest!”

A young girl sitting beside the two sisters waved her hand. It was Yuri Catreya, the girl who had accompanied him in the survey of the plains earlier.

“Yuri, why are you here?”

“Well, my father’s subordinates were watching over my tent. It was uncomfortable, so I fled here.”

“Your father… Marquis Catreya?”

“Yes. He’s trying to cage me again, but it won’t happen this time!”

Yuri crossed her arms and puffed her cheeks.

“I know if I go back home, I’ll be locked in my room again! I’ve decided I’m never going back!”

“…”

“So, I’ve decided to stay in Rest’s tent tonight. That’s fine, right?”

“Huh?”

Where did she say she was staying? Rest asked again, but Yuri responded with a bright smile, “Thank you!” It seemed she took his “Huh?” as an affirmative response.

“Oh no… Seriously?”

“Sigh… It can’t be helped.”

“…Honestly, I’m glad we came today.”

Rest was dumbfounded, while Viola and Primula looked exasperated. But they didn’t seem inclined to send their friend Yuri away. Rest, however, was hesitant about having a woman who wasn’t his fiancée stay in his tent. Still, he liked Yuri as a friend and wanted to help her if she was troubled.

(Well… it’s not like anything inappropriate will happen with Viola and Primula here.)

“Rest, you must be hungry, right? Let’s start dinner!”

Yuri enthusiastically started a campfire in front of the tent and began preparing the meal.

“I used to cook for myself in the school dormitory, so I’m pretty good at it.”

“…Oh, really? What’s your specialty?”

“Grilled meat, grilled fish, and grilled vegetables!”

“….”

Although Yuri said it with confidence, her response made it clear she wasn’t a skilled cook. Rest exchanged glances with the Rosemary sisters, who nodded back immediately.

“I-I’ll help too.”

“Me as well. Please let me assist.”

Viola and Primula joined Yuri, and the three of them began cooking over the campfire. They could easily ask the servants to bring ingredients or even prepared meals, but pointing that out to the three women seemed like it would spoil the fun.

(Well, cooking outdoors is part of the camping experience. I shouldn’t interfere.)

“Y-Yuri! Please use a knife there!”

“It’s fine! My fingers are sharper than any knife.”

“At least drain the blood! It’ll taste too gamey otherwise!”

“Please don’t use bugs! Even if they’re edible, they’re not meant to be eaten!”

“W-Wait, what’s that!? Where did you even find that mysterious creature!?”

“Don’t worry! I took a bite earlier, and there’s no poison, so it’s fine!”

“….”

Rest was growing increasingly anxious.

After 30 minutes of nerve-wracking anticipation, a dish was served in front of him on a wooden plate.

“W-What is this…?”

There was pasta soup, salad, and a herb-seasoned steak. Surprisingly, it looked like a decent meal. The aroma of spices wafted from the food, triggering his hunger.

“This looks good… Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but…”

“I’m surprised too. I didn’t think they could make something like this with those ingredients…”

“I can’t believe this turned out so delicious…”

“Those ingredients?”

Viola and Primula said something suspicious, making Rest, who had just felt hungry, freeze mid-motion with his spoon.

“Yup! It’s delicious. Today’s meal is a big success!”

Meanwhile, Yuri was happily eating. At least there didn’t seem to be any poison.

“Tastes great…”

When Rest tried it, the food was not just good—it was fantastic. The stew was flavorful, and the steak was mind-blowingly delicious. The meat was tender and juicy, practically melting in his mouth like a fatty piece of premium tuna. It was probably the best meat he had ever eaten in this world.

“Hey… This meat is incredible. What kind of animal is this from?”

“…”

“…”

When Rest asked, the sisters fell silent. They stayed quiet for a while before eventually breaking the silence, looking as if they couldn’t hold it in any longer.

“T-There’s no poison, really…”

“Yes… I don’t think it’s inedible…”

“…What exactly is this?”

It wasn’t until later that Rest would learn the meat came from a “Corrosion Beast,” a monster Yuri had brought back from the plains. This was the first time that what would later be known as one of the world’s seven rare delicacies, “Sabnock Meat,” had ever been tasted by humans.
