Chapter 145: First, Write Your Resume
Rest’s first step was to recruit his classmates. He took advantage of breaks, such as lunchtime, to approach those he was on good terms with.
“Oh, of course. Count me in,”
“Me too. I have experience in monster hunting.”
The first to step forward were his friends, Louise Gistal and Maurice Louie.
“I’m the third son, so I won’t inherit any land or title. If there’s a chance for independence, I’ll gladly join the frontier development.”
Louise said with a wide grin, clearly stating his motivation.
“I’m set to inherit the family business, but I could use the money, so I’m in.”
Maurice said nonchalantly.
Rest’s current recruitment was for people to help with monster hunting as part of the frontier development. However, those who stood out would be considered for positions as vassals of the newly established Count Clover family. At first glance, being a vassal for a new noble with no vassals might seem unappealing and challenging.
However, those with foresight understood. Being a vassal to a new noble with abundant land meant there was a good chance to secure lucrative positions, such as a town official in a new settlement. There was even the possibility of being granted a portion of the land and recognized as an independent vassal. The land was plentiful.
“I’m in too! Don’t leave me out!”
“Me too! No cutting in line!”
“Let me join! I promise I’ll be a great help!”
Classmates eagerly volunteered one after another. Moreover, hearing that Rest had returned to the academy, students from other classes and grades also started to gather. Most were from commoner backgrounds or were younger sons of noble families. Some were simply quirky individuals looking to make some extra money.
“I’ve always thought you were cool, Rest.”
“You have such a noble demeanor, I knew you were destined for greatness.”
“Could you tell us about your heroic deeds during the civil war?”
It wasn’t just male students looking to join. Some female students approached Rest, likely hoping to become his concubine or mistress rather than seeking employment.
“If you need something from Rest, you can talk to me.”
“Why don’t we have a chat first?”
Viola and Primula intercepted them with icy smiles.
“If you need to greet a senior, don’t be sneaky. Come talk to us first!”
“Eek!”
Most girls scattered in fear after such intimidation. Thus, the honey traps were avoided… or so it seemed. Astonishingly, some bold female students faced Viola and Primula head-on.
“Excuse me. My family runs a trading company. I’d like to discuss the logistics for the frontier development.”
“I’m being abused by my parents who dote on my younger sister. I would like to be taken in as a concubine.”
“My grandfather is the Minister of Finance. If I become a concubine, there will be various advantages.”
Despite the intimidation, those who saw great business opportunities in frontier development or had urgent personal circumstances continued to promote themselves, explaining the benefits of marrying them to Viola and Primula.
“You’re not just going to marry the Rosemary sisters, but take in mistresses too? I’m jealous!”
Louise laughed, patting Rest on the back.
“Leave me alone. I’m not getting involved in that.”
Rest replied, looking exasperated.
“Instead, could everyone who wants to join fill out this document?”
Rest said, distributing pre-prepared forms to all the boys who had expressed interest in joining the development.
“What’s this paper?”
“As you can see, this document has spaces for your name, background, and special skills. Once you’ve filled it out, bring it to me. If you can’t finish by the end of the day, you can send it to the Rosemary Marquis townhouse.”
What Rest handed out was essentially a resume. In this world, there was a culture where people of social standing, such as nobles, wrote letters of recommendation to promote individuals. However, these letters were long, detailed accounts of the person’s merits, making it time-consuming to review many of them. Therefore, Rest adapted the concept of a resume from his previous life into a format suitable for this world and decided to have those interested in participating in the development fill them out.
“This way, you can see everyone’s background and skills at a glance, right? It’s concise, so it shouldn’t take too long to fill out.”
“Hmm, it does seem easy to understand. Even I could fill this out, and I’m not good with paperwork.”
Louise said, nodding approvingly.
“But… unlike a letter of recommendation, what’s stopping people from lying? What if they write fake backgrounds and skills?”
Maurice asked, still skeptical.
“If someone lies, they’ll only be hurting themselves. When assigning tasks for the development work, we’ll refer to the skills section. If they’ve lied, they’ll end up struggling.”
The same goes for the background section. For tasks unrelated to monster hunting, it’s not crucial, but if someone is formally hired as a vassal, their background will be thoroughly checked. If lies are discovered later, all the trust and achievements they’ve built will come crashing down.
“I see… this does seem convenient. It could be applied to other job recruitments too.”
Maurice admitted.
“Yeah, this method might spread.”
Lloyd added with a joking laugh.
A few years later, their predictions proved correct. Rest continued to use resumes for his territorial development, and soon other nobles began to imitate him. For critical roles requiring trust, traditional letters of recommendation were still used, but for jobs needing many people, resumes became the norm. Eventually, resumes spread to private commercial firms as well, becoming a standard tool for hiring across both public and private sectors.
