Chapter 123: I Became a Viscount

“The students of the Royal Academy, Rest, Wilhelm Lubase, and Isis Carbelt, are entering!”

The chamberlain’s voice rang out as the doors to the audience chamber opened. Following the order of names called, Rest, Lubase, and Isis entered the room in turn. Rest was accompanied by the Rosemary sisters, whom he escorted into the chamber.

“……..!”

Rest felt momentarily overwhelmed by the large number of people in the room. Each person was well-dressed, clearly identifiable as nobility. As explained earlier by his father-in-law Albert, these were members of the royalist faction, supporting the king and crown prince. While they were allies in factional terms, their scrutinizing gazes suggested a hierarchy even within the same faction. They were likely assessing whether the young newcomers would be allies, rivals, or useful assets.

(Apart from my father-in-law, I can recognize a few faces… Duke Crocus, the prime minister, Marquis Catreya, the head of the knights, and the two princes.)

Rest also noticed the presence of the king’s close aides, Crown Prince Richard, and the second prince Andrew. Andrew, who was also the student council president, caught Rest’s eye and gave him a knowing smile.

(And… this is His Majesty the King. It’s my first time seeing him up close…)

Seated on a throne several steps higher was a bearded man, King David Aiwood, ruler of the Aiwood Kingdom. Often compared to his tyrannical predecessor, King David was known for his gentle disposition and benevolent rule. Although this favorable reputation was partly due to the negative comparison, his kind face exuded warmth.

(He might lack a bit in terms of majesty, but he seems approachable. Though it might be disrespectful to think of a king as ‘approachable.’)

Rest advanced to the front of the throne, separated from the sisters he was escorting, and knelt, bowing his head. This was the court etiquette taught to him numerous times by the butler Dible. Beside him, Lubase and Isis also knelt in the same manner.

“……..”

The Rosemary sisters grasped the edges of their skirts and bowed deeply. Despite the gender difference, all demonstrated the utmost respect towards the king.

“Raise your heads.”

The king commanded solemnly.

Still kneeling, Rest and his companions lifted their heads. Looking up from below, they saw the king smiling gently at them from his throne.

“You are the young heroes who defeated the master of the monster realm in the Sabnock Plains and rescued the participants of the monster hunting festival. Your achievements are truly remarkable.”

“I am delighted to see the next generation of our kingdom flourishing so splendidly. You shall be rewarded.”

The king stood, descended the steps, and approached Rest and the others. Rest bowed his head again, awaiting the king’s words.

“Rest of Marquis Albert household, I hereby bestow upon you the title of ‘Viscount’ and grant you the surname ‘Clover.’ Serve the royal family and the kingdom with all your strength.”

The king placed the end of his scepter on Rest’s shoulder. Taking a breath, Rest responded to the king’s decree.

“I pledge that my sword shall be wielded for the royal family and the kingdom. I swear my unwavering loyalty to the glorious Aiwood Kingdom.”

These words were the standard declaration made when receiving a title from the king. Having practiced many times beforehand, Rest managed to respond smoothly despite his nervousness.

“Wilhelm Lubase of the Knightly House of Lubase, I bestow upon you the title of ‘Baron’ and grant you the right to be called Baron Lubase. Serve the royal family and the kingdom with all your might.”

“My sword will be wielded for the royal family and the kingdom. I swear my unwavering loyalty to the glorious Aiwood Kingdom.”

Similarly, Lubase was granted the rank of baron. Following him, Isis also received her title.

“You three will be granted territories in the Sabnock Plains. You will be provided with personnel and funds for development, so work diligently for the prosperity of these lands.”

“We understand.”

“Furthermore, I have an announcement for everyone present here.”

The king paused, surveying everyone gathered in the audience chamber. A palpable tension filled the room as everyone awaited the king’s next words, knowing full well what was coming.

“Recently, Marquis Berlio Aiger, who was supposed to serve this kingdom, has betrayed the royal family. Therefore, Marquis Aiger is hereby declared a traitor!”

“””……!”””

The collective intake of breath was audible. Marquis Aiger, who had long exhibited defiant behavior towards the royal family, had finally made his move.

“We have already detained Aiger’s relatives who were in the capital. Marquis Aiger has gathered his faction’s nobles and soldiers in his territory. Crown Prince Richard will be the supreme commander, and Marquis Catreya will be his deputy, leading the subjugation army!”

The king turned his gaze to the three young heroes, still kneeling before him.

“You three young heroes shall join the subjugation army. Bring justice to the foolish traitors who defy the royal family!”

“””As you wish!”””

Rest and his companions accepted the king’s command and declared their participation in the subjugation army.

Since the time of the Queen Dowager’s reign, a deep-seated darkness had plagued the Aiwood Kingdom. The time had come to address and confront it.
