Chapter 4: Adventurer’s Guild

I came in front of the building that the village chief told me about.

On the signboard of the building, there were words I had never seen before. But for some reason, I could read it, and it read “Adventurers’ Guild.”.

Come to think of it, was the language I was talking to the village chief in Japanese?

Don’t think too much about this.

As a reader of light novels, this shouldn’t be beyond my expectations.

I opened the door of the Adventurers’ Guild and entered the building, but to my surprise, there was no one in the room.

There should at least be someone at the reception.

I looked above the reception counter and saw a bell, guess they want me to ring it. I took the bell in my hand and shook it.

 ’Clang clang.’

From the room behind the counter came a thud and a rustle…

The woman who came out of the back room seemed to be about 40 years old and looked like a mother with a big heart.

“Welcome. I’m Hannah, the guildmaster here. I’m the only one who works here.”

For a village of this size, I guess one guild employee is enough.

“That’s rare. I’ve never seen that face before, are you an other worlder?”

“Yes. The village head told me earlier. I don’t know anything about this world, but I look forward to working with you.”

“Well, you seem strangely calm, or at least used to this.”

For me, a light novel reader, I had already prepared myself for my first visit to an Adventurers’ Guild.

“I would like to register as an adventurer”

“Alright, please fill in the necessary information on this registration form. Do you need someone to write it for you?”

“I feel like I can write it myself, so I’ll give it a shot.”

“Okay, here’s the registration form. You’re really used to trying things out, aren’t you ……?”

Let’s see … oh wow! It feels strange, but I can write the letters of this world.

If you are too conscious of Japanese, the characters will become Japanese. The trick is to write without thinking.

——

Name: Takumi Arai

Place of Birth:

Occupation:

——

“What should I write in the place of ‘Place of Birth’ column?”

“For the ‘Place of Birth’ column, there is a rule that people from other worlds write the name of the first place he or she visited. So, write ‘Rosetta Village.”

“What about the occupation column?”

“It’s the profession that you want to be. Oh, I remember I’m meant to ask other worlders this. Do you have any ‘elements of skill’?”

 I nodded.

“Only otherworlders have skill elements,” she said. When you register as an adventurer and gain experience, you may acquire skills related to your profession.”

Skills, here I come!!!   I can finally get the skills I’ve been dreaming of.

I managed to suppress the joy that made me want to scream.

“You look very happy. Here’s the important part though, ‘skills’ are born from ‘elements of skills’. Skills that are not related to your elements of skill cannot be created .”

Just as the “Elements” form the basis of  Matter,  Skill Elements are the building blocks of Skills.

For example, no magic-related skills can come from the ‘sword skill element’.

 Alright! So far so good.

“Then I have a question. What do you need to pay attention to?”, she asked.

“My occupation. Skills can only be acquired in relation to one’s occupation. They are made from skill elements. So, the key is to choose an occupation that is compatible with my elements of skill.”

“That’s right! You’re the first person to understand it so quickly.”

Choosing an occupation that’s incompatible with your element of skill will result in a skill not forming at all, or one that is not useful.

It seems that there’s a lot more than just one skill. Elements of skills seem to affect character makeup more than I thought.

Ah, I need to ask something important.

“What should I do if I want to change my occupation?”

“Once you register your occupation, you can’t change it.”

“Huh? Can’t I change my occupation when I leave the Adventurers’ Guild and rejoin?”.

“Actually, it might be called ‘occupation’, but it’s more like a contract with the soul. To acquire a skill, you need a concrete image, and we use the word ‘occupation’ to make it easier to visualize that skill.”

I see, so if you want to learn magic skills, you can be a sorcerer or a priest, and if you want to specialize in fire magic, you can be a fire wizard.

Wait…… Is there a profession named “fire wizard” in the first place?

 Yeah…… No way.

“Is it okay for an occupation to be something that others don’t know about, as long as you know about it?”

“Of course. Occupations are meant to make it easier for you to acquire skills.”

 Whoa, seriously!

It doesn’t matter anyways. This is the type of information that’d make me hit restart if it was a game.

I have three skill sets:

・Contact

・Change

・Letter

I guess the occupation that goes best with these …… is this one..

I filled in the rest of the necessary information on the registration form and gave it to Hanna-san.

“Alright then, I’ll sign you up right away, just give me a moment.”

――Five minutes have passed since Hanna-san entered the back room.

“Here it is. Here is your adventurer card. By the way, I’ve never heard of this occupation.”

My information was engraved on the copper card that was handed to me.
