Chapter 418: Lightning Magic
Conveniently, lightning magic can be activated even from a distance. Because of this, I don’t have to worry about involving the knights surrounding us. Using the Detect skill, I confirm the location of the Big Apes and set the effective range to take them down in one strike.
“Julius-sama, what are you planning to do?”
“Of course, I’m going to defeat the Big Apes.”
It seems Carol has noticed the faint release of my magic power. As expected of someone with the Magic Power Detection skill. Even Isidore, perhaps sensing something, was staring at me with wide eyes. Why?
While I was wondering about that, the Big Apes continued to enter the effective range one after another. Now!
“Lightning Shot!”
With a cracking sound, a flash of light streaked across the battlefield. It homed in on the Big Apes one by one, striking them down. Lightning Shot was incredibly effective in group battles due to its ability to chain to nearby monsters.
Some Big Apes that weren’t completely taken down collapsed to the ground, twitching. They were paralyzed and unable to move. If we were going to finish them off, now was the time.
“Take down the fallen Big Apes! There aren’t any left in the trees!”
At my shout, the knights sprang into action as if jolted awake. I noticed that Axel was missing from the group, only to find him in the same predicament as me—held back by Carol, unable to move.
Hmm… This is going to be an issue in the future. If she grabs my arm every time something happens, I won’t be able to move. I’ll have to do something about that. Otherwise, I won’t be able to fight properly.
The immobilized Big Apes were easily finished off, turning into magic stones.
“Julius-sama, what was that magic just now?”
“Julius, what was that spell?”
Fabienne and Isidore asked almost simultaneously. Well, of course, they’d be curious. There was no point in hiding it now, so I explained what kind of magic it was. The moment I mentioned it was lightning magic, murmurs spread through the surroundings.
Before I knew it, everyone present had turned their attention to me. Could it be that I’ve caused a major incident?
“I’ve never heard of lightning magic before. Do you think I could use it too?”
“If you practice, you might be able to.”
I wasn’t sure, but if Isidore managed to learn lightning magic, then my existence wouldn’t stand out as much. That would be ideal. I needed him to do his best.
As Isidore brimmed with enthusiasm, Axel, having seemingly understood my intention, looked at him with a pitying expression.
Other mages in the group also expressed interest in learning, so I decided that once we returned to the Mulan Marquisate, I would teach them all at once. If no one else could use lightning magic, that would be a problem. I had to make sure at least some of them learned it.
“Julius-sama, we’ve finished collecting the magic stones. We’re ready to depart at any time.”
“I see. Then let’s hurry back. If other monsters head this way, things will get troublesome again.”
For some reason, I seemed to have taken command of the group. At first, the leader of the Mulan Marquisate’s knights had been in charge, but now… How did this happen?
Once we return to the Heine Frontier Count’s Territory, this will probably become another tale of heroism. Just thinking about it makes me want to sigh.
After that, we made it back to the Mulan Marquisate without any issues. Since we had taken the shortest route, we weren’t in the forest for too long, but it had been a rather intense experience.
Waiting to greet us at the mansion was the Marchioness of Mulan.
“It looks like everyone made it back safely. I’m so relieved. I was worried something might have happened.”
Seeing us return just as we had left, the Marchioness seemed relieved. But the truth was, a lot had happened.
What should we do? There’s no way I have to report everything, right? The ones who should be reporting are Carol or the Mulan knights’ captain.
When I glanced at Carol, she was also looking at me. Why?!
The Marchioness tilted her head, sensing something was off from our silence. This was bad. If we wanted to avoid this conversation, we needed to leave right now.
But, of course, things weren’t that simple. Unable to withstand the tension—or perhaps feeling responsible—the captain of the Mulan Marquisate knights reported that we had been attacked by monsters.
As expected, the Marchioness was speechless. Without delay, we were sent to the infirmary.
Even though Carol explained that we were unharmed, she must have been flustered, because the Marchioness didn’t accept her words. As guests, we had no choice but to comply.
“Hey, I’m completely fine, so how long do I have to stay in bed?”
“I’d like to know that too. I need to plant these seedlings in the herb garden soon. Freshness is crucial… Freshness!”
“I never expected this to happen. But after seeing how pale the Marchioness was, I couldn’t bring myself to refuse her…”
Axel trailed off. Since she was his future mother-in-law, he probably didn’t want to be too critical of her. He was already fully prepared to marry, huh? That would mean Carol would be marrying into Axel’s family.
His family held a knight’s barony and served in the royal knights, so there shouldn’t be any issues regarding status… Probably. I wasn’t sure.
After undergoing multiple checkups, we were finally released. By then, the sky had already darkened completely. This ruined my plans. What should I do now?
The Marchioness apologized repeatedly and thanked us profusely. Honestly, it made me feel guilty. Even though I told her, “Really, it’s no trouble at all,” she still seemed quite shaken. I had to do something to reassure her.
But before that—
“Nero, how long until dinner?”
“About an hour.”
“Alright, if we rush, we can make it.”
“Rush? Don’t tell me, Julius-sama…”
