Chapter 63: Justification
Several weirs along the Ureri River northeast of the capital regulated the current during floods.
Lionel’s force reached the weir nearest the capital and inspected it and the surrounding area.
Meanwhile, Gilbert and the others established camp and gathered inside the wagon to work silently.
They modified their companions’ weapons and the extras Goliath brought.
Because blades couldn’t be worked while traveling, they focused on hilts.
They cut tanned leather into narrow strips, wound it around each grip, and fastened it with Dolph’s rivets. This would prevent slipping during a battle with the Undead Mud. Flora’s braided cords secured the ends.
“Grandmother told me to pray, but I concentrated so hard on working that I forgot.”
Gilbert muttered while inspecting a finished sword. Flora laughed beside him.
“The work itself is surely a formless prayer.”
“Now that you mention it, we did talk about something like that not too long ago.”
Less than a month had passed since Barbara’s lesson, but so many events made it feel distant. As they altered each weapon, they indeed thought of the person who would wield it.
“…I seem to enjoy working with my hands. If this is enough, I could pray without end.”
“I understand. The sounds of making something resemble music and are very soothing.”
Flora sounded so cheerful that Gilbert couldn’t help smiling.
“Gilbert, you aren’t secretly putting your infatuation into my weapon as a blessing, are you?”
“What? What are you talking about, idiot?”
A mercenary peering inside teased him, nearly making Gilbert tear the leather in his hands.
The laughing mercenary loved the wish buttons and embroidered shirts and wanted to order some for his wife and children in Kelvim. His substantial advance payment had created a troublesome obligation.
Dolph and Barbara watched warmly from the rear. Though only a day from the capital, the same carefree mood remained, making Gilbert smile.
As sunset approached and dinner preparations began, the distant whinnying of many horses drew everyone’s attention and sent tension through the camp.
“What was that…? Which direction did it come from?”
“It’s the opposite direction from the dam where Lionel and the others are investigating.”
As they were checking, Lionel and his party also heard the noise and rushed over.
“A carriage appears to be under attack farther along the road. Let’s help.”
“Undead beasts?”
“…Probably bandits. I hear weapons striking.”
By the time they arrived, the Black Knights—Lionel’s former subordinates—had taken control.
The assaulted carriage was sturdy but crudely designed, unlike a commoner’s or merchant’s vehicle. An unusually large guard accompanied it.
The subdued attackers likewise seemed unlikely to be ordinary bandits.
When the struggle ended, the carriage door opened and a noblewoman peered out.
“Thank you all for coming to our aid in this dangerous situation… Oh!?”
Right after expressing her gratitude, the noble lady exclaimed in surprise.
“Goodness! How fortunate that my rescuers are exactly the people I was seeking!”
Ignoring their astonishment, the young woman descended elegantly and bowed.
Seeing this, Lionel and the other knights looked slightly shaken.
“I’m Amanda Aime Beresford. His Highness the Crown Prince sent me to find all of you.”
Everyone recognized the crown prince’s fiancée’s name.
“Lady Amanda, I’m relieved to see you safe. So…, you were looking for us?”
Lionel asked, stepping forward, and Amanda smiled gently.
“His Highness asked me to deliver this letter.”
Amanda paused. She studied each rescuer and his blackened shield with faint sadness.
“If you continue toward the royal capital as you’re, one false move could see you arrested as rebels.”
Hearing this, everyone present held their breath.
Though marching to destroy undead beasts, they remained an armed force.
“Therefore, this will also provide a legitimate justification that protects you.”
Looking proud, Amanda handed Lionel a sealed letter.
