Chapter 24: Wight Knight

The next morning.

After eating the breakfast Sheila had prepared, I headed outside slightly earlier than usual.

I pulled out my tablet and placed the order for the Wight Knight. As 3,000 NP was deducted from my balance, a zombie-like creature clad in tattered armor appeared before me.

So this is… the Wight Knight.

Most of its body was encased in armor, but since the armor was in tatters, parts of its skin were exposed here and there.

Its body was discolored a sickly blackish-purple, and its face had a melted, grotesque appearance—definitely scary to look at.

It wasn’t armed, but it held a wooden shield in one hand, which was also in tatters.

Having default equipment is convenient, but with it being in such poor condition, I couldn’t help but think it might actually be stronger and more agile without it.

At least the smell wasn’t as bad as its appearance suggested—actually, it was closer to being odorless, which was a huge relief.

“…It doesn’t seem like it’s going to attack. Does that mean it recognizes you as its master, Sato-san?”

“I think so, considering it was the same with Lime, but… its appearance is so scary that I can’t get close to it.”

“If anything happens, I will certainly protect you. So, please try approaching it.”

I wanted to observe it a bit more, but Sheila urged me forward, so I cautiously approached the Wight Knight.

It hadn’t moved an inch from where it had been summoned, standing frozen with its head slightly bowed.

The fact that it wasn’t moving at all was eerie, and I couldn’t help but imagine it suddenly springing to life and attacking me.

Sheila will protect me. Sheila will protect me.

Repeating that mantra in my head, I inched closer until I was within arm’s reach of the Wight Knight.

Even at this distance, it didn’t move. I hesitantly touched the armor, but… there was no reaction.

Could it be that undead-type creatures need some sort of magic energy to activate?

“It’s not moving at all. Do we need to do something specific to get it going?”

“Maybe… but it’s possible that it can only act at night or in dark places. Undead creatures are usually only seen in dungeons, caves, or at night in dark areas.”

I see. That explanation seems very plausible.

If it doesn’t need food or rest, then perhaps its restriction is that it can only function in dark environments.

If that’s the case, it’s a pretty inconvenient limitation, considering my work primarily involves farming during the daytime.

If it were meant for something like mining, it might have been extremely useful. But since my work relies on sunlight, this restriction could be a problem.

“It’s nice that it might be active while we’re sleeping, but for now, we’d prefer a creature that can help during the day.”

“Especially since you can’t give it detailed instructions. I imagine the low price is likely because of this drawback.”

“I nearly ended up buying the Skeleton Swordsman without considering it might have the same disadvantage. Thank you for stopping me.”

“No problem. …So, what will you do? You bought it to increase your workforce, but if it can’t move, it’s not going to help much, is it?”

“Let’s wait until night and see what happens. If it turns out farming is too difficult for it, I’ll save up more NP and purchase a Matango or Korobokkuru instead.”

Though it was a bit of a letdown, I’m sure it won’t be completely useless.

Since the mountains are nearby, animals sometimes come down at night and wreak havoc on the fields. If nothing else, the Wight Knight could help as a deterrent for pests and predators.

For now, I left the immobile Wight Knight where it was and turned my focus back to work.

As usual, Sheila and I went about our farming tasks together, just like we had been doing up until now.
