Chapter 15: The Weapon Shop
Sheila and I made our way to the central district of the royal capital.
As the most bustling part of the kingdom, the streets were packed with people. If I wasn’t careful, it seemed like I could easily get separated from her.
“This central district is incredibly crowded. I didn’t expect it to be this lively.”
“There are many popular shops here. Is there any specific place you’d like to visit, Sato-san?”
“Somewhere I’d like to go… It’s not that I want to buy anything, but I’d love to visit a weapon shop, an armor shop, or maybe a store dealing in magic items, if possible.”
Since this was a fantasy world, I couldn’t pass up the chance to visit such places. While I couldn’t use weapons, armor, or magic items myself, there was no harm in just looking—they didn’t charge for that.
“I didn’t expect you to be interested in that sort of thing. I’m fairly familiar with those types of shops, so I’ll guide you.”
“I’d greatly appreciate it.”
With Sheila leading the way, I followed closely behind, making sure not to lose her in the crowd. She moved with purpose, as though she already had a destination in mind. Before long, we arrived at a shop that radiated a rugged, unmistakably “weapon shop” vibe.
“We’re here. This shop primarily deals in weapons and armor. The shopkeeper can be a bit difficult to deal with, but I think it’s the best weapon shop in the capital.”
“The best in the capital? I’m excited to see it!”
I eagerly pushed the door open and stepped inside.
The shop wasn’t very large, yet it was packed with customers.
And—it was ridiculously hot.
It seemed the forge was located in the back, and the heat from it seeped into the shop.
Despite the less-than-ideal shopping conditions, the place was full of people, which was a testament to the quality of the shop.
I picked up a real sword displayed near the entrance to take a closer look.
“This is an iron sword, right? The blade is beautiful, and it looks like it has a great edge.”
“The weapons here are considered low-cost options. But as you said, even the lowest-quality weapons here are considered high-quality at other shops.”
“This is the lowest quality? I can’t tell what makes it inferior at all.”
Probably because I wasn’t used to evaluating swords, I had no idea what made it “low quality.”
While I was examining the inexpensive iron sword, an older man emerged from the back of the shop and approached us.
He appeared slightly older than me, short in stature, and covered in hair—from his head to his beard. Could he… be a dwarf?
“Well, if it isn’t Sheila! Haven’t seen your face around lately. What brings you here?”
Judging by his tone, he must be the shopkeeper—and it seemed he was acquainted with Sheila.
“It’s been a while, Rozzo. I’ve been away from the capital because I’m currently tasked with guarding this gentleman under the king’s orders.”
“Guard duty under the king’s orders? So, this unremarkable guy is some big shot or something?”
“Yes. Are you familiar with the recent Hero Summoning Ceremony?”
“Of course, I’ve heard about it! …Wait, so this guy’s a hero?”
“No, he was caught up in the Hero Summoning by accident. Also, please stop calling him an ‘unremarkable guy.’ His name is Sato-san.”
“Oh, I don’t mind it at all, so there’s no nee—”
“That’s not acceptable. I appreciate all the help you’ve given me, Rozzo, but Mr. Sato has done even more for me. So please be respectful.”
Sheila cut me off firmly.
Sheila’s firm but polite reprimand left Rozzo scratching his head awkwardly before he turned to me and bowed.
“Sorry about that. I didn’t realize you were so important to Sheila. She’s always complaining about someone or other, so I thought you were just some annoying official.”
“No, no, it’s fine. I wasn’t offended. Thank you for your consideration.”
“…Huh. You really are a good guy! I can see why Sheila seems so fond of you.”
Rozzo let out a hearty laugh. Despite his rough exterior, he seemed like a good-natured person who cared about Sheila.
“Yes, Sato-san is truly a wonderful person. So, Rozzo, please be kind to him as well.”
Sheila added with a smile.
“If Sheila’s asking, I can’t refuse! So, you here to buy a weapon today?”
“No, we’re just browsing. Since Sato-san is from another world, he finds weapons and armor fascinating, so I thought I’d show him around.”
“Ah, I see! That explains why he was so absorbed in looking at the bargain bin swords. Alright, Sheila’s been a big help to me, so I’ll give Sato-san a sword! Anything outside the showcase—just pick one and take it!”
Rozzo suddenly made this generous offer.
I felt bad about accepting something for free, so I was about to politely refuse, but…
“Thank you, Rozzo. I’ll accept it without hesitation.”
“Yeah, go ahead! Take it without holding back!”
“Um… are you really sure about this?”
“I’m not joking! My gut’s telling me that it’s better to get on Sato’s good side, so that’s what I’m doing!”
“In that case, I’ll gratefully accept.”
“Good! Take your time picking one!”
With that, Rozzo returned to the back of the shop.
He’s really a bold and straightforward kind of person.
It’s probably mainly because Sheila is well-liked by him, but for someone like me who doesn’t have much money, his offer is incredibly helpful.
I’ll gladly take him up on his offer and pick out a weapon.
