Chapter 120 – Fireworks

After enjoying the nagashi-somen (flowing noodles), we cooled off in the recreation room and spent some time playing and relaxing until nightfall.

Once it got dark, we all gathered outside again with the fireworks.

“Sato-san, what are we doing tonight?”

“It’s a kind of activity called ‘fireworks.’ You get to watch colorful sparks. I wonder if something like that exists in this world?”

“I’ve never heard of it before.”

“Me neither! Even with that explanation, I still don’t really get what it means—‘colorful sparks,’ huh?”

It seems fireworks don’t exist in this world.

Technically, hand-held fireworks could probably be made here, but maybe the idea of using fire for entertainment just doesn’t exist.

“Anyway, I’ll hand one out to each of you. Light the tip of it.”

With those instructions, everyone carefully lit their fireworks.

They were just ordinary hand-held sparklers, but with so many people using them at once, it made for a stunning scene.

“Whoa! So pretty! I used to be scared of fire, but I could watch these fireworks forever!”

“The flames are really colorful. I think they look even more beautiful because it’s nighttime.”

“Sato, the stuff you prepare is always so interesting.”

“There’s plenty, so once it burns out, feel free to grab another one.”

The fireworks were a big hit.

Even for me, doing fireworks again after such a long time was much more fun than I remembered.

While everyone laughed and enjoyed their sparklers, I stepped away to prepare the rocket fireworks.

When it comes to fireworks, the real stars are the ones that shoot into the sky.

I had really wanted to show them some of those big, flower-shaped fireworks, but those require mortar shells, which just wasn’t feasible. Instead, I bought some rocket fireworks and fountain fireworks.

“Everyone, please stand back a little!”

With that warning, I launched the first rocket firework.

It shot into the sky with a loud whistling sound, and cheers erupted as the fiery ball soared upward.

“Whoa! I love fireworks!”

“Amazing. It’s really like magic!”

“It’s just like a really pretty Fireball spell!”

Science really might be a kind of magic.

As I nodded at Sheila’s words while watching the rocket streak upward, I also lit a fountain firework.

“Wow! Another new one! This one looks like a flower blooming on the ground!”

“Hehe, Joel looks like he’s having the most fun.”

“I am! This is so much fun!”

“I totally get how you feel, Joel. Watching these fireworks gives me all kinds of new ideas.”

Joel was definitely the one enjoying the fireworks the most.

It was age-appropriate for him, and I’m glad I included fireworks as part of our summer activities.

Due to NP restrictions, I couldn’t buy too many big fireworks, so that was the end of the large-scale stuff.

The rest of the evening would be hand-held sparklers and senko hanabi (traditional slow-burning Japanese sparklers), paired with watermelon.

I rushed back to the villa, fetched the chilled watermelon, and cut it into slices.

Then I placed them on a large platter and returned to pass them out to everyone.

“Thanks for waiting. Let’s enjoy some watermelon while watching fireworks.”

“It kind of looks like the severed head of a monster… but since you prepared it, Sato, I’m sure it tastes great.”

“It will taste great! I guarantee it!”

For some reason, Sheila boldly declared that, but watermelon is one of those universally delicious fruits—er, vegetables.

Since opinions can be split when it comes to adding salt, I decided to have them eat it plain for now.

“The green and black stripes with red inside might not look the most appetizing, but as Sheila said, I think it tastes great.”

“I trust you, Sato-san. I’ll try some!”

“I’ll go first! …It’s so sweet! It’s absolutely delicious!”

“It really is! Super sweet and so tasty!”

Once Sheila and Joel reacted so enthusiastically, the others all reached for slices of watermelon as well.

Everyone seemed to love it. I’d be happy if watermelon could become a classic summer treat in this world too.

“Please save a few of the seeds. I want to try planting them.”

“If we plant them, will they really grow into watermelons!?”

“I’m not sure yet, but I’d like to give it a shot. It might not work exactly the same, but since it’s a type of vegetable, I think it should grow.”

“Wait, this is a vegetable!? The vegetable category is way too broad!”

Rozzo’s honest reaction made me laugh.

I have to admit, I also think the classification is way too broad.

Watermelon, strawberries, melons… They all feel like fruits to me.

“Since it doesn’t grow on trees, it’s technically classified as a vegetable. Anyway, I’m planning to try cultivating it, so I’d appreciate everyone’s help.”

“Got it! I’ll help with everything I’ve got!”

After that, we spent a blissful evening enjoying senko hanabi and fresh watermelon.

It was a spontaneous plan, but the nagashi somen, fireworks, and watermelon all turned out amazing.

This little summer activity project was, without a doubt, a huge success.
