Chapter 146: Imperial Council
The officials gathered in the Orline Imperial Council were divided into two clear groups. Members of the pro-war faction looked relieved. Members of the neutral faction could barely contain their anger.
“Allow me to explain the purpose of the recent military exercise,” General Tokel said calmly.
“The exercise was arranged so that our navy could learn from our ally, the Lunoa Kingdom. The reports indicate that it has proceeded without difficulty.”
“One moment!”
Riley, occupying Prime Minister Fox’s seat as his proxy, stood.
“Naval exercises fall under the Navy’s jurisdiction. Why is an army general presenting this report? Where are the naval officers?”
“The Navy is occupied with personnel transfers. You’re already aware of that.”
“That’s precisely the problem. You forced this exercise through while those transfers were still under way.”
“Princess Emma of the Lunoa Kingdom and Major General Willard were present in our country. It would have been foolish to waste the opportunity.”
“The Orline Empire hasn’t entered the war. The military can’t act independently while disregarding the Cabinet.”
“I informed members of the Cabinet,” Tokel replied.
“Informing individuals isn’t the same as obtaining Cabinet approval.”
Riley and Tokel glared at one another across the council chamber. Riley represented Fox and the neutral faction; Tokel led those demanding entry into the war.
Before the argument could continue, a young soldier rushed into the room.
“Forgive the interruption!”
“What is it? This is an important meeting!” Riley shouted.
The soldier froze under his glare, then looked toward General Tokel.
“Who sent you?” Tokel asked.
“Major General Willard, sir.”
“What’s his report?”
The chamber fell silent.
“The surprise attack against the Rosha Empire was successful.”
No one spoke.
That report marked the moment when the Orline Empire crossed the point of no return and entered the war, even though its highest officials hadn’t yet approved what had been done.
