Chapter 359: Fierce Battle at the Fortress
With a flood of barbarian warriors breaching the walls, chaos engulfed the inside of the fortress.
Yet even amidst the confusion, there were those who stood their ground.
“Don’t panic, soldiers!”
Valeya Catreya, commander of the fortress’s defense unit, barked orders across the din of battle.
“The gate is already sealed! No more enemies will enter! Keep calm and cut down the invaders one by one!”
While shouting commands, Valeya himself fought on the front line, spear in hand.
“Haaah!”
“Gyaaaaaaaah!!”
His sweeping strike sent a barbarian warrior flying, smashing him against the inner wall. The sheer force of the blow shattered the ogre-man’s bones completely.
“My brother’s right! Everyone—keep your heads and handle the enemy carefully!”
“Yeah! You call yourselves Aiwud soldiers? Quit whining and fight already!”
Valeya’s younger brothers, Carlius and Toya, were also in the fray, cutting through the enemy ranks.
Carlius wielded twin blades, Toya a spear—their relentless fighting inspired the soldiers around them.
“Almakine Sword Dance Style… ‘Scattered Blossoms.’”
In an instant, a spray of crimson filled the air.
Several barbarians were sliced apart before they even realized what had happened, their bodies collapsing in pieces.
“That’s a relief,” murmured a pale young man, hair long enough to shadow his eyes.
Even amid the slaughter, he smiled faintly—a cold, detached smile that belied the carnage around him.
“I was starting to think I’d die of boredom, just waiting out the hours in peace inside this fort. Good to know there’s some work for me after all.”
His words, spoken in a chillingly calm tone, belonged to Wilhelm Lübase—the “Woman-Hating Sword Saint.”
Sword in hand, Lübase glared at the barbarian warriors closing in.
“For now, I’ll simply cut. If you value your lives, resist me with everything you have.”
“You human bastard!”
“I’ll crush you!”
Provoked by the flickering movement of his sword tip, the barbarians roared and charged as one—ogre-men, lizardmen, and insectmen alike.
“Almakine Sword Dance Style… ‘Flying Plum Blossom.’”
Lübase swung once.
Though the enemy was still several meters away, the slash itself flew forward—cleaving one warrior cleanly in two.
“What—!?”
Kicking off the ground, Lübase leapt into the melee.
“Hmph!”
“Gah!?”
His blade flashed, taking the head of an ogre warrior.
A lizardman thrust his spear in response, but Lübase twisted his body, evading with effortless grace. Spinning with that same motion, he delivered another cut—bisecting the lizardman from hip to shoulder.
“OOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHH!!”
A massive insectman warrior lunged, attempting to crush him under sheer bulk.
But Lübase merely narrowed his eyes, showing not an ounce of fear. His sword gleamed.
“Scattered Blossoms.”
A storm of slashes erupted.
The insectmen were famed among the barbarians for their natural armor, so hard that even masterwork blades could scarcely pierce it.
Yet Lübase’s sword slipped effortlessly between the gaps in its shell, carving the giant into neatly dismembered chunks.
“You were at least worth cutting—but that’s all. A boring opponent.”
“Damn you, human!”
“CURSE YOUUUUUU!”
The remaining barbarians howled in fury—but the tide of battle had already turned.
With Rest’s magic sealing the fortress gate, enemy reinforcements had stopped.
At first the defenders were shaken by the ambush, but with the Catreya brothers and Lübase fighting fiercely, the momentum had shifted decisively in their favor.
“Push them back! Fire your spells!”
“Don’t let them recover! Drive every last barbarian out!”
“OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH!!”
Isis and Dible unleashed spells of their own, raining destruction upon the intruders.
The number of enemies within the fortress rapidly dwindled.
“I thought we were done for a moment there… but it looks like we’ll make it through after all.”
Watching the battle turn, Rest finally exhaled in relief.
He raised his hand once more—sending a razor wind to cut down another barbarian warrior, joining his comrades in the hard-fought defense of the fortress.
