Chapter 464: The Magic Pharmacists from the Royal Capital
At the entrance stood a woman in a long, deep-green robe that immediately identified her as a royal magic pharmacist, accompanied by two people wearing travellers’ cloaks. Evidently, all three had made the journey together.
If that was the case, they might as well have said that all three had come under His Majesty’s orders.
“Welcome to the Heine Margraviate. I am delighted that the latest magic-potion compounding techniques are spreading throughout my domain.”
“Not at all. This is entirely due to His Majesty’s wish to spread the latest magic-potion compounding techniques throughout the kingdom. I am merely carrying out his orders.”
The transparently formal exchange continued while we listened in silence.
The pharmacist officially dispatched by the King was Arisa, one of the two most skilled royal magic pharmacists in the kingdom. Her presence alone showed how serious His Majesty—or rather, Commander Giovanni—was. He was clearly determined to obtain the full recovery potion recipe.
After greeting Arisa, we welcomed Lyla and Clark, who claimed merely to have stopped by during a training journey. They were a married couple, and their relationship reminded me a little of Fabienne and me.
“Please forgive our sudden intrusion. The Heine Margraviate is known for selling some of the finest magic potions in the kingdom, so I desperately wanted to train here as a magic pharmacist. I would be grateful if you put us to work in any way you see fit.”
“Thank you. We were actually struggling with a shortage of help, so this is very welcome. I’m counting on both of you.”
“Yes.”
“Leave it to us.”
Their eyes sparkled with enthusiasm. They might have expected to work without pay, but that would not happen—we would compensate them properly. Besides, they would be learning a range of compounding techniques. It was an exceptionally valuable training opportunity.
“Oh, I nearly forgot. We have a letter from Lord Leon for Professor Julius.”
With that, Arisa produced a letter from inside her robe. The name “Leon Mulan” was written on it. There was no mistake—it was from Lord Leon. Had he also discovered that I could compound full recovery potions? I was afraid to read it.
Trembling, I opened the letter and found the words, “I wish you had taught me how to compound the full recovery potion too,” blurred by tear stains. My stomach hurt. Was this my fault?
“Julius-sama, is something the matter? What does the letter say?”
“It’s all right, Fabienne. Lord Leon only wrote that he wants to learn how to compound the full recovery potion too. Arisa, could you please teach him when you return to the royal capital?”
“I do not mind, but I believe Lord Leon would prefer to learn directly from you, Professor Julius.”
That was probably true. But if so, the earliest I could teach him would be next spring. I could not make him wait that long. If I did, a second or third tear-stained letter would probably reach House Heine. At that rate, I might genuinely develop a stomach ulcer.
“When I next see Lord Leon, I’ll teach him thoroughly, including all the finer points. In the meantime, please teach him the basic method.”
“Understood. Leave it to me.”
Arisa bowed deeply. Honestly, her deference towards me still felt excessive. She was older than I was and one of the highest-ranking royal magic pharmacists in the kingdom. I wished she would treat me a little more casually. Admittedly, it was a rather luxurious complaint.
First, we moved to the salon so they could rest after their journey and tell us what had happened. Apparently, Margrave Draken had delivered a substantial quantity of World Tree materials to the royal castle.
Naturally, His Majesty must have been astonished, while Commander Giovanni and the other royal magic pharmacists must have been overjoyed.
Of course, His Majesty asked where the materials had come from. When Margrave Draken replied, “They are now being harvested within my domain,” the King was reportedly delighted.
Well, that makes sense. If you can get materials from the World Tree, many nations will want them. They could be used as a powerful political bargaining chip.
I did wonder whether this might put the kingdom in danger. At present, however, the only hostile nation was the Lazarl Empire on the neighbouring continent. That country was hated by every other nation on this continent and was in an overwhelmingly disadvantageous position, so it was unlikely to cross the sea merely to attack us.
That’s exactly why they had tried to use the Kingdom of Rundarl on this continent. Well, that plan fell apart too.
“I heard that His Majesty was absolutely delighted when he learnt that your efforts, Professor Julius, had given the kingdom access to World Tree materials.”
“I see.”
Why did they have to mention my name? Margrave Draken had possessed the World Tree seed. Without it, we could not have obtained any materials. It was not as though I had done anything special.
Perhaps accelerating the World Tree’s growth by a thousand years had been a mistake. I had also received the Forest Spirit’s blessing. How had matters come to this? His Majesty had undoubtedly marked me as someone to watch.
