Chapter 126: Otaku Tendencies

Two weeks had passed since the goblin squad began assisting with the work.

Their help with the harvest was a massive boost. Moji and Helena used magic to handle watering and tilling, while the goblin squad, Portia, and Lois took care of the harvesting.

Sheila, Mash, and I were in charge of sowing seeds, creating a clear division of labor.

Joel and Lua, who joined irregularly, would fill in wherever help was needed, and thanks to this system, we were now finishing our daily work around noon.

Not only were we now able to take one day off per week, but wrapping up by midday made it feel like a very comfortable workplace.

Farming was fun to begin with, and I felt we’d created the best possible environment.

While munching on some rice balls after finishing a day’s work and thinking about all this…

A luxuriously decorated carriage came into view.

It could only be Velvet—it had been a while since her last visit.

Maybe she had finished her new manga.

Excited, I went to greet Velvet.

“Velvet-san, it’s been a while.”

“Sato, long time no see.”

“Huh? You’re not with Donnie-san today?”

I always thought of Velvet and Donnie as a pair, but today she had come alone.

Not that it was disappointing—Donnie frequently stopped by during his daily runs to train Joel, so it wasn’t like we hadn’t seen him lately.

“Donnie temporarily joined Ren and his party. He wanted to come here too, but I had to stop him.”

“Oh, really? He’s working with Ren-san’s group? For training purposes?”

“Seems like it. Thanks to you, Sato, he’s at his peak right now, and being a veteran adventurer, he has a lot to teach.”

I hadn’t known that.

Ren had lost the exhibition match after winning the mock battle tournament. There was clearly still a lot for him to learn in one-on-one combat, so I could see him growing even stronger.

Come to think of it, Ren and his group hadn’t shown up since the tournament. It made me want to see them again.

Still, I was glad to hear they were doing well.

“When you put it that way, there’s no one more suited to be a mentor than Donnie-san.”

“Exactly. That’s why I came alone today. Seems like things have changed here too, so fill me in. I also have something to report.”

“Something to report? A new manga, maybe?”

“Keep your voice down! …Well, that too. But there’s something else I want to share.”

“Sorry. What’s the other thing you want to tell me?”

“I’ll tell you after dinner. First, let’s talk about what’s been going on here.”

And so, I began updating Velvet on everything.

I told her about expanding the fields, the addition of Helena and the goblin squad, and of course…

The entertainment room.

We had talked about the idea before, but this was the first time I’d be showing it to her. I was looking forward to seeing her reaction.

“Whoa! That’s a ton of manga! You added all this!?”

“Yep. I added the next volumes of One Piece and a series called Hunter x Hunter.”

“I want to read it! I can read it, right!?”

“Sure, but let’s save reading until we’ve both finished our updates.”

“Ehh!? I was going to be dramatic about my report, but now I just want to rush through it!”

“Nope. I want to take my time reading your manga too, so please build up the suspense till the end.”

“Ugh, fine… I feel like after reading this, I’ll be too intimidated to show you mine, so I’ll wait.”

Her reason for waiting was pretty weird, but at least she held off reading it for now.

Next, I wanted to introduce her to gaming, so I powered on the Switch.

“Wow! What is this!?”

“It’s a video game. Last time was board games—this one is digital.”

“This is a game too!? It looks totally different!”

“Well, it’s still a form of play. Want to give it a try?”

“Definitely!”

After a quick explanation of the controls, I let Velvet play.

She got totally hooked, and with the same passion she had for manga, she began analyzing the game in depth.

I hadn’t thought much about it before, but Velvet was definitely an otaku at heart.

But since I had similar interests, it made being with her really comfortable.

“You really pick things up fast. You’re also a good artist—your hands are so skilled.”

“I guess I’m good with my hands. I never thought sewing, drawing manga, and playing games would all benefit from that, but… I’m glad I’m good at it. Thank you, Sato.”

“Huh? That’s all your own talent, Velvet-san.”

“If I hadn’t met you, I don’t think I’d ever have thought being handy was a good thing. So, thank you.”

Her offhand gratitude warmed my heart.

She had been all prickly when we first met—not someone you’d expect to express thanks like this.

Like a proud parent, I watched Velvet happily engrossed in her game, feeling quietly happy about how much she’d grown.
