Chapter 118: Hot Springs
In this world, bathing usually just means washing with cold water.
Partly because this place is far from the royal capital, hot water is really only used for cooking.
During the winter, I did ask Sheila-san to heat some water for me, but even then it was just a primitive bath made using a drum can.
Controlling the temperature was difficult too, and the water cooled down quickly.
I tried using heated stones and other methods, but none of them worked out.
So when I heard about a hot spring, it’s only natural I got excited.
“Sato-san, you seemed rather spaced out. Is something on your mind?”
After Lua-san and the others had gone back to their home, Sheila-san asked me this.
I don’t think the three of them noticed, but it seems Sheila-san did.
“Yes. I was thinking about that white steam and hot water that Lua-san and the others found.”
“That strange-smelling water, right? Could it be the kind that grants immortality or eternal youth?”
“No, nothing that grand. In my world, there’s something called a hot spring, and it sounds very similar.”
“Ah, is that the type of bath filled with hot water that you’ve mentioned before?”
“Exactly. This would be a higher-grade version of that.”
“I see. So the white steam water was actually a ‘hot spring’, a place to cleanse your body.”
As expected of Sheila-san—she picks things up quickly, which is really helpful.
“That’s right. I got lost in thought because I really want to go to a hot spring.”
“You’ve always seemed to want a proper bath. I’d love to take you there, but…”
“Yes. It would be difficult, wouldn’t it?”
Exactly. As was mentioned, the path to the hot spring is extremely rough.
If I can’t get there by carriage, then it’s practically impossible for me to go.
“If it were just the difficult path, maybe there’d be a way, but with strong monsters in the area too, it’s definitely not safe.”
“It really is a shame.”
But that’s just how it is.
The real issue is my own weakness—if anyone’s to blame, it’s me.
“Can’t you purchase it using your skill, Sato-san?”
“It would be difficult. Maybe if I got creative, I could manage something, but honestly, I’d say it’s impossible.”
We’d either have to find a hot spring closer by or make a safe route to the one Lua and the others found.
But as I’ve said many times, neither option is very realistic—so for now, I have no choice but to give up on the hot spring.
“If even your skill can’t manage it, I guess it really is hopeless. But wasn’t it Rozzo-san and Sid-san who were working on a bath, right?”
“Yes. When I casually brought it up, they said they’d make one. Apparently, they’ve asked a friend in the royal capital to craft a magic device that can freely adjust water temperature. Once it’s ready, they’ll be able to build a bath.”
“A custom-made magic tool? That’s amazing. If you don’t mind me asking—how much does something like that cost?”
“Five platinum coins. Surprisingly, it seems it can be made just with a fire and ice magic stone, so Rozzo-san said it’s not that expensive.”
Since it only needs fire and ice magic stones, these types of tools are apparently fairly common in the capital.
Devices that heat water for showers are pretty easy to get.
But this time, it’s a large, bath-sized water temperature adjustment tool, so Rozzo-san’s friend is making it as a custom order.
I feel a little bad having them go through all that just for my request, but I think everyone will really enjoy having a proper bath.
If it’s well received, I might even build something like a public bathhouse.
And if people get interested in bathing, surely someone else will share my passion for hot springs.
“I see. Honestly, I think that’s a cheap price for something so valuable.”
“But we don’t have much money in this world’s currency, so for now, Sid-san is covering the cost for us.”
“If you sold some items from your world, you could earn money quickly… but you don’t really want to do that, do you, Sato-san?”
“That’s right. One of my original goals was to build a lodging facility that uses items from another world. I don’t want to lower the value of those things by selling them too freely.”
Spreading items from another world might bring in a crowd—but I can’t help thinking the disadvantages outweigh the benefits.
Also, I personally value Japanese items more highly than this world’s currency, since I can only buy them with NP.
It would just feel wasteful.
I’m grateful Sid-san is covering the cost for now, but Norman-san said he’ll buy the tomatoes and other vegetables I’m growing, so I think I can make back five platinum coins pretty quickly.
Selling items from Japan is a last resort—I plan to handle as much as I can within this world.
“I’m really looking forward’t to your otherworldly lodging facility…! So far, it seems like it’s the most well-developed of your projects. Is that right?”
“From my point of view, it’s still far from finished. The entertainment room, for example, is only about 5% complete. It’ll be quite a while before I can open it as an actual facility.”
“Even with all the fun things already in there, it’s still only 5%!? Sato-san, are your standards just that high, or is the potential of your world just that vast…!”
“Probably both. If people are going to spend money, I want to give them the best experience possible.”
Since I’m particular about using Japanese cuisine, the first step is probably to build a large-scale farm.
Once I can earn a lot of NP from that and grow Japanese crops—then I can move on.
The monster ranch will probably come last.
Since it’s a “ranch,” I want to focus on creatures suited for pets or livestock, but right now I can’t afford to spend NP on that.
If there’s a monster that produces something like milk, or lays delicious eggs, I might consider it…
For now, I’m relying on Velvet-san to gather that kind of information.
Lua-san’s party and Ren-san’s group also promised to actively research tasty ingredients in this world, so I’ll have to count on their progress for now.
