Chapter 114: A Mistaken Sight?

The day after we helped Yato-san.

After finishing breakfast and stretching lightly, I stepped outside… only to freeze in place when I saw Yato-san playing with Crow in the plains beyond the fields.

“Satou-san, why did you stop walking?”

“It’s just… I feel like I see Yato-san… It’s not just my imagination, right?”

“…It’s not your imagination. I can clearly see Yato-san playing with Crow too.”

So it really wasn’t just my imagination.

She did say she’d come back soon, but I never thought she’d return the very next day.

Well, I had told her that if she couldn’t find her way home, she could come back and I’d help her look for it, so maybe she couldn’t return after all…

…But even so, there’s someone unfamiliar with her.

“Ah! Satou! Ashros, those two over there are the ones who saved me—Satou and Sheila!”

Noticing me and Sheila-san coming out of the cottage, Yato-san beamed and ran over.

I had a lot of questions about her dragon form yesterday, her age, and everything else… but right now, what I wanted to ask most was—

“Good morning, Yato-san. I’ll get straight to the point—why are you here again so soon? It’s not because you couldn’t get home, is it?”

“Hm? Thanks to you, I was able to return home safely! I didn’t think I’d be back so soon either, but Ashros said she wanted to thank you personally, so I brought her along!”

After that explanation, the person called Ashros stepped forward in front of me.

She was a tall woman with beautiful red hair, dressed in something like a black suit.

At first, I thought she might be Yato-san’s mother, but… that didn’t seem to be the case.

Perhaps she’s a bodyguard, like Donnie-san?

“Nice to meet you. I serve as an attendant to Yato-sama. My name is Ashros. Thank you so much for saving her.”

“No, please don’t mention it. Crow did most of the saving—we just did a little first aid.”

For someone from this world, she’s incredibly polite.

She even bowed deeply—beyond a perfect right angle—which made me feel bad.

“Just as Yato-sama described, I’m relieved to find that you truly are a kind person. It may be a poor token of gratitude, but please accept this.”

Saying that, Ashros-san handed me what looked like a dazzling crimson gem.

I didn’t know what was inside it, but a powerful energy seemed to swirl within, almost like an eye.

I couldn’t tell how valuable it was, but I could tell it was something far beyond what someone like me should ever accept.

“I really can’t accept something like that! I didn’t help Yato-san expecting any sort of reward.”

“No need to be shy—take it! You and I are friends, right? That’s what friends do!”

“It’s because we’re friends that I can’t accept it. If a friend is in trouble, it’s natural to help them. Taking something in return would be unthinkable.”

“Hm… I don’t quite understand, but is that what friendship is?”

“Yes. If Yato-san ever needs help, I’ll be there. So please help me if I’m ever in trouble too. That’s what friends do—no calculations, no expectations.”

“Mm! Hehehe, friendship really is a wonderful thing!”

Yato-san beamed, looking totally satisfied with the explanation.

Ashros-san tilted her head, still looking confused, but thankfully returned the red gem to her pocket.

Whew… I’m really glad I managed to refuse it.

That thing gave off serious “not for commoners” vibes.

Anyway, Yato-san seemed happy, and I was relieved I could avoid accepting the gem.

I do feel a bit like I tricked her… but it’s win-win, so I’ll let it slide.
