Chapter 281: A Date? (Celestine Arc) ⑤:

After descending the long staircase, they found themselves in a surprisingly vast and spacious room.

It felt just like a dungeon from a video game. And to top it off, it even had the ominous vibe of a boss room.

And as if to confirm that atmosphere—there stood a giant over two meters tall.

“Rest-san, that is…”

“Celestine, stay back.”

Rest moved forward, shielding Celestine behind him.

He took a defensive stance, but the towering figure in front of them didn’t move.

Looking closer, it wasn’t a human or a monster. It was a humanoid mass of iron.

“A golem…”

It was a golem—a magically created robot.

Crafted through the advanced magical science of alchemy, golems were used for tasks ranging from menial labor to combat.

Their creation was highly technical and something of a closely guarded secret—known only to a select few.

The golem remained motionless and silent.

Thinking it might be broken, Rest activated [Presence Detection], and though faint, he could feel a trace of magical energy.

“This is clearly a combat-type golem. I believe it’s a defensive model that activates when approached.”

Celestine added from behind.

“There are many types of golems, but even ones for simple tasks like cleaning cost a hundred gold coins. Combat models go for over a thousand. Since hiring human soldiers is far more efficient, golems aren’t used that often.”

“Makes sense. Come to think of it, even in the war between Rodel and the Queen Dowager’s faction, golems weren’t used.”

A thousand large gold coins—about one billion yen. It made more sense to use that money to hire a thousand soldiers than to build a single golem.

“So how about that golem? Would it cost a thousand coins too?”

“…That one looks incredibly advanced. It could easily cost ten times as much.”

“…”

Ten thousand gold coins—a hundred billion yen.

A walking mountain of money stood before them.

“What do you want to do, Rest-san?”

“I’ll take it down, of course. I want to know what it’s guarding.”

The room was dim, and its full layout was unclear.

But the fact that a golem was placed here meant there had to be something worth protecting.

“Stay back so you don’t get caught up in this.”

“Please be careful.”

Rest slowly approached the golem.

Then, the silent figure—until now motionless like a mannequin—turned its head toward him.

“Oh, it moved.”

“OOOOOOOOOOOOOOH!!”

With a roar, the golem raised its fist.

It swung its iron-like arm straight at Rest.

“Oof!”

“[Earth Wall]!”

The wall of earth Rest conjured blocked the punch, but a large crack formed on impact.

The second blow shattered it completely.

“[Wind Blade]!”

Rest launched a blade of wind at the golem’s legs.

The attack struck its knee cleanly—but bounced off with no effect.

“OOOOOOOOOOOOOH!”

“So its offense and defense really are as massive as they look… I see.”

Thinking about it, a giant mass of iron just moving was already a serious threat.

It wasn’t much different from being attacked by a runaway construction vehicle.

“Well, there are still ways to handle this.”

“OOOOOOOOOOOOH!”

Rest leapt backward, and the golem followed with a lunging attack.

“[Mud Shot]!”

But Rest cast a spell at the golem’s feet, causing the ground to become muddy and unstable.

The golem lost its balance.

“[Wind Orbs]!”

Then, he launched over a dozen spheres of wind at its face and torso.

The flurry of impacts finally caused the golem to fall backward.

“Ooooooh!”

“[Earth Bind]!”

While it was down, Rest conjured ropes of earth to bind it.

The golem thrashed and struggled, but Rest continued pouring magical energy into the spell to reinforce it.

In a battle of attrition, Rest—with his limitless mana—had the advantage.

The golem flailed for a time—but eventually, as if its strength had run out, it fell still.
