Chapter 91: Words of Comfort
Even Rozzo and Sid, her own brothers, had cheered for Sheila, which made me feel a little bad for Brittany. Still, I couldn’t help but root for Sheila too.
Brittany seemed like the type who might storm off without sticking around, so I really wanted to stop her and make sure she left with good memories.
“The winner: Sheila. …You’ve improved even more in this short time.”
Donnie commented.
“I was so frustrated by my loss to you, Donnie-san, that I’ve been secretly training ever since. Thank you too, Brittany-san. Your strikes were heavy and honestly frightening.”
Sheila replied.
“I couldn’t even hope to land a hit. …You were strong. Also, I didn’t mean anything by it, but I’m sorry for looking down on you.”
Brittany apologized.
“Not at all. I really have been fortunate to live a good life.”
Sheila then looked over at me with a smile.
She must have meant me when she said that, and I couldn’t help but grin like an idiot. I was just so happy.
Even though things had been tense, I was relieved that the match had ended with a handshake.
“Sato-san, I won!”
“Great job, Sheila-san! You were so cool out there.”
“Hehe, thank you. I’ll win the next one too, so keep cheering me on, okay?”
“Of course. I’ll be rooting for you with everything I’ve got.”
She’d just looked so cool moments ago, but now that she was back, her cuteness hit me like a truck. That gap in her demeanor was something else.
After showering Sheila with praise, I went off to look for Brittany, who had disappeared from the scene.
I had heard her shouting at Rozzo and Sid for not cheering her on, but now she was nowhere to be seen. I was starting to worry that she had gone home already… but then I found her.
Or rather—stumbled upon her.
She was crouched behind Lua’s house, crying.
I thought about pretending I hadn’t seen anything and walking away, but… once you see someone like that, it’s impossible not to say something.
“Brittany-san, are you okay? Are you hurt anywhere?”
“—! Wh-Why are you here, Sato?!”
“You disappeared, so I came looking. I’d have hated it if you’d gone home already…”
“Like hell I’d leave! …Ugh, how embarrassing. You saw me at my worst. I’m not hurt or anything. I’m just pissed off that I got beaten so badly, that’s all.”
She scrubbed at her eyes roughly.
They were red and puffy, but at least she hadn’t been physically injured. That was a relief.
“I see. I’m glad you’re okay, and even happier you’re not planning on leaving.”
“There’s nothing to be glad about… I’ve been an adventurer for years, and I lose in the first round of a family tournament? So humiliating.”
“This might not be very comforting, but I really do think this ‘family tournament’ is high-level. Sheila beat Donnie-san, a former A-rank adventurer, and even Lime the Slime—who’s still to fight—has beaten him too. Plus, the four heroes are participating. Once you see the upcoming matches, I don’t think you’ll feel so bad about losing.”
The competition was clearly way above average, and Brittany just had the misfortune of drawing a tough first-round opponent.
Sheila, in my opinion, was a strong candidate to win the whole thing. Her next match against Mika would definitely be a good one.
“…You really think a lot of your teammates, huh?”
“Of course. I know better than anyone how amazing they are. …Oh, and Brittany-san, you were amazing too, you know?”
“Don’t bother with the half-hearted flattery. …Still, thanks for coming to comfort me. Alright, I’ll head back and watch the rest of the tournament.”
“Let’s do that. And once the tournament’s over, I’ll cook you something truly delicious. I promise you won’t regret coming today.”
“Delicious food, huh? That’s something to look forward to.”
Brittany smiled as she said that, and I felt genuinely relieved from the bottom of my heart.
Her smile was just… pure and surprisingly cute.
“—Hey! Don’t you dare tell those idiot brothers of mine that I was crying, got it?! If they find out, they’ll never let me live it down!”
“Don’t worry. I won’t tell Rozzo-san or Sid-san—or anyone else. Let’s get back.”
And so, I headed back to the arena with Brittany.
The next match, the seventh, was Thread vs. Velvet.
I might have missed part of it since I’d gone looking for Brittany, but I was sure they were putting on a great fight.
