Chapter 85: A Delivery from Kurosawa

Three weeks have passed, and there’s now less than a week until the scheduled mock battle tournament.

Everyone I invited has confirmed their participation, and additionally, one person recommended by Rozzo and another recommended by Donnie will also be joining.

It looks like we’ll have at least 16 fighters, so we’re planning to use a tournament format. Since we’ve also prepared prizes for the top three participants, I’m sure everyone will give it their all.

Preparations for the post-tournament meal are also going smoothly. About two weeks ago, we started harvesting Japanese crops.

I was relieved to see that they can grow even outside the skill-based field, and more importantly, it helps save a lot of NP.

Thanks to the food storage that Sid built, the ingredients are being preserved without spoiling. On the day of the event, I plan to go all out with my cooking.

However, one concern is the sheer number of participants this time.

With over 16 people attending, I’m not sure if I can handle all the cooking alone. I’m considering calling Norman from the capital to help.

He works at a public cafeteria, so it’s uncertain if he can come, but I think he’d be interested in handling Japanese ingredients.

Since I won’t be participating in the mock battle myself, if he can’t come, I’ll just have to cook while everyone else is fighting.

Thanks to expanding the fields, I’ve managed to save up some NP over the past three weeks, so I should be able to make it work… hopefully!

“Sato-san, are you awake?”

As I was lying in bed thinking about the mock battle tournament, I heard Sheila’s voice from outside my room—an unusual occurrence.

I was about to get up anyway, but… I wonder what’s going on.

“I’m awake. What’s the matter?”

“A package has arrived from the capital, and they asked for you to receive it.”

“A package? It’s not the usual food supplies?”

“No, it doesn’t seem to be from the royal castle this time.”

I haven’t ordered anything, and I have no idea what it could be.

Tilting my head in confusion, I stepped outside to receive the package.

“You’re Sato-san, correct? Please sign here for the delivery.”

“Understood. …By the way, who is this package from?”

“It’s from Kurosawa-sama.”

Kurosawa…?

The name doesn’t ring a bell, but maybe it’s actually Kurosawa written in kanji.

If that’s the case, it’s highly likely that it’s the surname of one of Ren’s group.

“Thank you very much. Have a good day.”

After expressing my gratitude, I took the large burlap sack.

It was quite heavy, and my curiosity about its contents grew. Peeking inside, I found… a huge quantity of magic power crystals.

There was also a letter, slightly sooty, which I took out and began to read.

As expected, the sender was Ren.

According to the letter, these magic power crystals were sent to support Lime and the others for the upcoming mock battle tournament.

Thread has already evolved, but Mash hasn’t yet. Lime is still a Dark Slime as well.

Since Thread can only be active in dark environments, it’s unlikely to participate, which makes these magic power crystals incredibly valuable.

After bowing my head in gratitude toward the letter, I quickly went to report to Sheila.

After breakfast, we immediately began feeding the magic power crystals to Lime and the others.

The first goal was to evolve Mash, so I focused on feeding Mash.

Since there’s a chance that Mash’s species might not be capable of evolving, I decided to keep going until half of the supply was used.

Mash has had a pretty rough time so far, so I really want to help it evolve, but… I wonder if it’ll work.

“Sato-san, I’ve brought Mash.”

“Thank you. Mash, Ren sent us some magic power crystals. Do you want to eat them?”

As soon as I asked, Mash eagerly nodded multiple times.

It seems like it wants to evolve. Now, all that’s left is to feed it the crystals and see what happens.

“I’m glad to confirm that’s what you want. Then, go ahead and eat as much as you like.”

The crystals Ren sent seem to be of particularly high quality—perhaps he carefully selected them.

That increases the chances of a successful evolution.

I handed Mash one dark crystal at a time, and it happily ate them.

Lime also seemed to enjoy them, so they must taste good.

Watching Mash eat so enthusiastically made me wonder what they tasted like… but just as I was thinking that, Mash’s body began to glow brightly.

This happened surprisingly early—after only five crystals.

I watched in anticipation as Mash’s body grew slightly larger and its cap turned yellow.

Though the change wasn’t as drastic as Thread’s evolution, it was more noticeable than Lime’s.

Given the visible transformation, it’s safe to assume Mash has successfully evolved.

Mash has had it rough, so I was relieved to see it wasn’t a species that couldn’t evolve.

Somehow, I even felt happy myself.

“Mash, it looks like you successfully evolved! How do you feel?”

Mash began shaking its body enthusiastically as if to say, “I’m fine.”

Its movements seemed more agile as well—it might perform well in the mock battle tournament.

“Sheila, do you know what kind of monster Mash evolved into?”

“I can’t say for sure since I’ve never faced one directly, but I believe it’s a Paralyze Matango.”

“Paralyze… does that mean it can use paralysis-based attacks now?”

“That’s right. Paralyze Matangos attack by releasing paralyzing spores. You can assume its spores are now much stronger than when it was just a regular Matango.”

That sounds exciting.

I’m not sure if I should allow Mash to use that ability in the tournament, but if it can be controlled, a mild paralysis effect might be acceptable.

For now, Mash has successfully evolved.

Next, I’ll distribute the remaining magic power crystals mainly to Crow and Moji, while also giving some to Lime.

Lime has been in its Dark Slime form for quite a while without any changes.

Like Mash, I have a feeling it might be due for another evolution soon.

But the only way to find out is to try feeding it the crystals.
