Chapter 63: Battle Sense

Just like a predator waiting for its prey to step into a trap, Donny launched a sharp, fast, and heavy strike at Sheila. However…

Sheila simply took a large step back and easily dodged his attack.

Having observed the battle between Velvet and Donny earlier, it seemed she had completely analyzed Donny’s attack range. She skillfully weaved in and out of his striking zone, avoiding his attacks while keeping him on edge.

“Your eyes and movements are sharp… but you won’t win just by dodging, you know?”

Donny taunted her as if trying to provoke her into attacking, but Sheila showed no intention of changing her strategy. Their swords didn’t even clash as time continued to pass.

At this rate, it seemed like the fight could go on until sundown. However, after a while, Sheila seemed to have figured something out and showed the first sign of attacking.

“Finally ready to fight? Or are you running out of stamina?”

“It’s not a stamina issue. I’ve seen through your movements, so I’ll begin my attacks now.”

With that declaration, Sheila abandoned her cautious footwork and suddenly charged forward.

Donny smirked confidently and, without a hint of panic, timed his counter perfectly.

I held my breath, fearing that Sheila might be seriously injured from the collision of Donny’s fierce strike and her aggressive charge.

However…

As if mocking my concern, Sheila abruptly halted just before impact, narrowly dodging Donny’s attack by a hair’s breadth. Then, without hesitation, she surged forward again, slipping effortlessly into his guard.

“Tch! So you really did see through me, huh?”

For the first time, Donny’s composed expression cracked.

Just as his change in demeanor suggested, the match had completely shifted in Sheila’s favor.

She relentlessly stayed in a position unfavorable for Donny, focusing on rapid consecutive attacks.

Until now, I had thought that being large was an absolute advantage in combat. However, in extreme close-range battles, it seemed that Donny’s size worked against him, making it difficult for him to manoeuvre quickly.

Before he could come up with a countermeasure, Sheila unleashed a relentless flurry of attacks, landing three solid hits in quick succession.

Against all odds, she had overturned expectations and secured victory.

“Damn it… That really pisses me off. I got completely outplayed.”

“Thank you very much. I can say without a doubt, you were the strongest opponent I’ve ever faced.”

Donny ground his teeth in frustration, while Sheila, in contrast, smiled brightly, looking completely refreshed.

It was truly an incredible fight.

“Both of you, great job! I never imagined Sheila would win… That was amazing!”

“Thank you. But I only won because Donny gave me a handicap by staying stationary.”

“Nah, that wasn’t a handicap. I was just waiting because my eyesight isn’t great—I had no choice but to let you come to me. Sheila… just who are you?”

“I’m just a servant.”

“Yeah, right! There’s no way a mere servant could be this strong! I never thought Donny would lose! I’ve asked before, but seriously, why were you stuck doing odd jobs?!”

“Like I said before, I had my reasons.”

Seeing how shocked Donny and Velvet were, it was clear just how incredibly strong Sheila was.

If she had been discovered by the right people earlier, she probably could have easily pursued a career as a professional fighter. Thinking about that made me feel bad for her.

But then again, if she had, she wouldn’t be here protecting me…

“I always thought you were strong, but you really are on another level, Sheila.”

“I have confidence in my skills, too. Even though I’m retired, in a one-on-one setting, I still believe I can beat anyone outside the absolute top tier.”

That made sense.

With his physical build, reach, and sheer strength, Donny was born with the makings of a top-tier warrior.

Even with the weakness of poor eyesight, his abilities placed him among the elite—watching the mock battle made that clear.

The fact that Sheila defeated him meant that she was one of the strongest fighters in the kingdom.

“Thank you for the compliment.”

“If you want, I can personally recommend you to the Royal Knights. I also have connections to A-rank adventurer parties and elite clans. If you ever want to make full use of your strength, just let me know. You’re still young—it’s too soon to settle for a slow life in the countryside. It might not be my place to say, but I think you belong somewhere you can truly shine.”

“Thank you, Donny. If you had made that offer to me a little while ago, I would have jumped at it… But I have no intention of leaving here.”

“I see. I won’t argue, but it really does seem like a waste.”

“Not at all. In fact… Donny, I’d like you to have a mock battle with Lime next.”

As I listened to their conversation, my heart had been pounding with nervous anticipation. But when Sheila casually declined Donny’s offer, I felt a wave of relief wash over me.

I thought I had prepared myself for the possibility of Sheila leaving for the capital, but now that the moment had come, I realized I didn’t want her to go.

While I was still trying to calm my racing heart, it was decided that Lime would be Donny’s next opponent.

Lime was strong, but against Donny, I highly doubted he had a chance of winning.

Rather than watching a match with a predictable outcome, I needed to do something about my own nervous state.

Not wanting Sheila to notice how flustered I was, I decided to step away under the pretense of going to the restroom and take a moment to compose myself.
