Chapter 51: Christmas Party
A week had flown by since we returned from the dungeon town, and today was finally the day of the Christmas party.
Over the past week, we had diligently prepared for the celebration, ensuring that everything—from decorations to food—was nearly perfect.
Although I couldn’t make a Christmas cake, I did prepare ice cream and pudding as substitutes. If we get the chance to hold another party next year, I’ll make sure to earn enough NP to afford a proper Christmas cake.
As I mulled over plans for next year, I waited for Velvet and Ren’s group to arrive. Before long, there was a knock at the door—it seemed Velvet had arrived first.
She was dressed much more elegantly than usual, wearing what looked like a high-class dress. In fact, her entire outfit, including her accessories, seemed quite expensive. It made me feel a bit guilty that this was just a simple home party.
“Welcome, Velvet. That’s an impressive dress you’re wearing today.”
“Since I’d never heard of a party like this before, I decided to dress up a bit… but was this not supposed to be a special occasion?”
“No, it’s just a casual home party. Sorry for not explaining it properly.”
“Ah, I see. If I’d known, I would have come in something more comfortable. I had no idea what a ‘Christmas party’ was, so I assumed it was some kind of grand event.”
“I apologize for the misunderstanding. But as a princess, aren’t simple home parties quite rare for you?”
“Yeah, I’ve only ever attended one when I was little. But… I kind of like the handmade feel of this one. It’s exciting in its own way.”
She smiled as she looked around at the decorations. Even though I had made her dress up unnecessarily, she still seemed to be enjoying herself, which was a relief.
“For now, please have a seat in the living room. We’ll start once everyone has arrived.”
“Got it. So, who else is coming?”
“Only Ren and his group—the other heroes who came to this world with me. You and they are the only close friends I have here, so it’s a pretty small gathering.”
“Oh, the heroes are coming? I’ve seen them a few times, but I’ve never actually spoken to them. That should be interesting. And honestly, I prefer a smaller group. The fact that it’s just you, Sheila, and people from another world makes things feel less formal and more relaxed.”
That made sense—being a princess must come with a lot of responsibilities. Since Ren and the others didn’t have the same knowledge or expectations as people in this world, it was probably easier for her to let loose.
“No need to be formal. Just have fun. I doubt Ren and the others will treat you any differently than they treat me.”
“Sounds good. I’ll enjoy myself then.”
I led Velvet to the living room, handed her a pirate manga I had bought earlier, and then returned to wait for Ren and the others. Less than an hour later, another knock came at the door.
When I answered, Ren and his group stood there, holding gifts.
“Welcome. You’re here earlier than I expected.”
“We couldn’t wait, so we came a bit ahead of schedule. That okay?”
“Of course. Come on in.”
“Thanks! We’re crashing in!”
Having everyone arrive early was actually a good thing—it gave them more time to get acquainted with Velvet.
As I guided Ren’s group into the living room, Mika immediately noticed Velvet.
“Huh? Who’s this? Wait a second… I feel like I’ve seen her before… or maybe not…?”
“Mika, that’s the princess.”
“Oh! Right! She’s the princess! …Wait, WHAT?! Why is she here?!”
“Sato, you invited the princess to the Christmas party?!”
Since I wasn’t sure if Velvet would actually come, I hadn’t told Ren’s group in advance. Their shock was understandable. While they seemed to recognize her, their reaction confirmed that they weren’t particularly close.
“I met Velvet through various circumstances, and she’s visited my house a few times. So when I invited her, she decided to come.”
“I don’t know if that makes you an incredible person or just an incredibly weird one, Sato!”
“You guys are the heroes, right? I’m here in a personal capacity, so no need for formalities. Let’s just enjoy ourselves.”
“Uh… well, if you say so. In that case, we’ll call you Velvet. As Sato’s friend, it’s nice to meet you.”
“Likewise. Looking forward to it.”
After Ren and Velvet shook hands, their introductions were complete.
I expected their conversation to continue from there, but…
As soon as she had a moment, Velvet resumed reading the manga I had lent her.
She really was a bookworm through and through.
