Chapter 38: Unexpected Strength
With Sheila announcing Lime’s victory, Lime finally revealed itself.
Even though it didn’t have a face, its smug satisfaction was obvious from the way its body swelled slightly.
“Lime is way too strong! Did it really become this powerful just by evolving into a Dark Slime?”
“I believe Lime has exceptional talent. Despite this being its first battle, its ability to blend into the darkness showed a level of mastery beyond a beginner.”
Even Sheila seemed impressed by Lime’s movements.
Since its body was liquid, there wasn’t even a single sound when it crept up on its opponent.
Its timing was perfect, and Velvet hadn’t been able to react at all.
I’ve heard that attacks outside of one’s awareness are especially effective, so it made sense that she got knocked down without being able to brace herself.
“I didn’t think I’d lose, so this is really frustrating! Sheila, get revenge for me!”
“Understood. I was able to observe from the sidelines, so I believe I can handle it. Lime, are you up for another round?”
Lime bounced up and down energetically in response.
Sheila sounded confident, but I had a feeling Lime might pull off another easy win.
I watched with anticipation as Sheila and Lime faced off.
Just like before, Lime blended into the darkness.
I was curious about how Sheila would counter this, and to my surprise, she closed her eyes.
At first, I thought she had given up, but it seemed she was cutting off her visual input to heighten her other senses.
Lime attempted the same surprise attack it had used on Velvet, but Sheila dodged effortlessly and landed a perfect counter.
In the end, Lime was completely overwhelmed, making its previous flawless victory seem like a lie.
“Wow! Sheila, you moved like a master! I have to ask again—why were you working as a handyman with that level of skill?”
“I’ve told you before, I had my reasons. That aside… Lime was even more impressive than I expected. I couldn’t hear it move at all, so I wouldn’t have noticed it until it was already close.”
“Lime was really amazing! Honestly, if we were only allowed to use wooden swords, I don’t think I’d ever win against it. Well, unless it wasn’t during dusk!”
“Even in an unrestricted fight, I think Lime would still be strong. Its only attack was a body slam, and it was being careful not to cause any serious injuries, wasn’t it?”
When Sheila asked, Lime bounced slightly, as if nodding.
So that meant it had other attack options as well.
Thinking about it, it could probably expand its body and envelop its opponent, just like when it absorbed trash.
I had underestimated it just because it was a slime, but it was far stronger than I had imagined.
“Sato-san, shall we call it a day for now?”
“We’ve fought everyone, so I suppose—”
Just as I was about to say we were done, Thread stepped out of the cabin.
But instead of its usual hoe, it was holding a large wooden sword.
Even without saying a word, it was clear—Thread wanted to have a match.
I had forced it into farm work, but at the end of the day, monsters were meant for battle.
It must have been itching for a fight.
“Oh, so this is the undead monster I heard about. It really does wake up at night, huh?”
“Thread, do you want to fight too? Before the sun fully sets… let’s have one match.”
Thread nodded enthusiastically, and thus, a sparring match between Sheila and Thread began.
Thread displayed powerful, heavy sword techniques, but in the end, Sheila secured a flawless victory.
Afterward, Thread also fought Velvet, and despite an intense clash, Velvet emerged victorious.
As a result, the power ranking among us looked something like this:
Sheila >>> Lime ≧ Velvet >> Thread ≧ Mash
And at the very bottom, with an unbreakable gap between me and the others, was… me.
Seeing how strong Sheila was, I started to wonder how things would play out if we included Ren and Mika in a sparring tournament.
Maybe once I recruit a few more tamed monsters, I could set up a tournament with grand prizes.
With that thought in mind, I wrapped up the sparring session and returned to the villa.
