Chapter 376: Magic Resistance Test

While Lionel went to bring the mage, I prepared for the experiment. Today’s goal was not to physically break the reinforced glass but to have magic cast on it from a distance.

“Wouldn’t it be fine if Julius used magic?”

“I’ll pass. Besides, if that’s the case, then Alex-niisan could use magic too, right?”

It seemed that Alex-niisan wanted to see me use magic. Now that I thought about it, he had probably never seen me use magic before. Was he curious? I didn’t mind using it, but I had a feeling that things would get troublesome if I did.

One by one, the mages arrived, followed by a group of knights. What about their morning training? I guess everyone was curious after all.

“Julius-sama, I have brought them.”

“We’re ready here too.”

In the direction I pointed, reinforced glass panels were lined up at equal intervals. The plan was to have magic cast on each one. I decided to hold off on fire magic for now and start with other types instead. This batch of reinforced glass was specifically designed for fire resistance, so breaking it would likely take time.

I gave instructions to the mages, telling them that the hardness was the same as the least durable reinforced glass from a previous experiment. That should give them a rough idea of its strength.

Magic was cast one after another—earth magic, wind magic, water magic, ice magic. As expected, since the glass was imbued with magic resistance, it withstood even fairly powerful spells without difficulty.

“This is incredible. The results are far better than expected. It’s much more resistant than during the previous magic resistance test.”

Oh? That was new information. I’d have to ask about it later. They must have conducted a magic resistance test on the reinforced glass they had made. After all, I had told them they could test it however they liked.

As we watched in anticipation, the reinforced glass finally began to crack. The magic being used had become quite powerful. At this rate, we could confidently say that the glass had sufficient magic resistance.

“Next up is fire magic. What were the results from the previous test?”

“As Julius-sama suspected, the glass melted almost immediately when exposed to fire magic. It can hardly be considered fire-resistant. In fact, it’s more efficient to use fire magic than to break it physically.”

As expected, fire was the glass’s weakness. Now, let’s see how the fire-resistant coating performs.

After taking a short break, the mages reported that they were ready. Lionel made the final adjustments, and the experiment began.

“We will now commence the experiment. Start with the same level of magic as last time.”

“Understood!”

Following Lionel’s command, the mages moved swiftly. Our mage corps had no official leader, so in practice, Lionel was the de facto head.

The first spell cast was Fireball. With a roaring sound, it shot toward the reinforced glass.

I thought it would collide directly, but just before impact, it deflated rapidly, as if the air had been let out of a balloon.

The mage tilted their head in confusion. I also tilted my head to the left in the same way. Looking around, I saw that everyone else was tilting their heads as well.

“What happened?”

“I-I don’t know. The fireball suddenly lost its momentum… I have no idea what’s going on.”

The mage was bewildered. Seeing this, Lionel instructed them to try launching another fireball. However, the second one also deflated with a quiet shun before reaching its target.

“Julius-sama, could this be the effect of fire resistance? If I recall correctly, it was ‘extraordinary,’ wasn’t it?”

“Yeah, that’s right.”

“Fire resistance… at an extraordinary level!”

Alex-niisan grabbed my shoulder tightly. It hurt a little. Maybe because my face twisted in pain, he quickly let go while muttering, “Sorry.” However, he still seemed unable to contain his shock, his eyes darting back and forth in disbelief.

“I’ve never heard of resistance at an extraordinary level. Just what is going on…?”

“Alex-sama… I sympathize with you. Next! Let’s move on to the next test!”

Lionel seemed to have grasped something and gave the mage a new instruction. This time, three mages would cast magic together. They synchronized their timing and launched fireballs. However, just like before, they withered away before hitting the reinforced glass. The mages slumped their shoulders in defeat. I felt kind of bad.

“Ah, well, we’ve confirmed the fire resistance, so let’s wrap up the test. If we continue any longer, it’ll interfere with everyone’s training.”

By now, knights and mages who had heard the rumors had gathered around us. If we kept going, it would start disrupting their regular duties. With this many people watching, trying to avoid attention was impossible. I gave up on that.

And besides, Alex-niisan was here. Surely, he would manage to calm the situation.

“Y-yeah. Maybe we should stop around here. I’ll report to Father that it withstood three fireballs without issue. Ahaha…”

“Alex-sama.”

Lionel called out to Alex-niisan making him flinch. His expression froze in a strained smile. He glanced toward me, as if asking for help, but I pretended not to notice.

If I responded, we’d all be dragged into this.

“Wh-what is it?”

“This is a serious matter. We must determine the exact extent of the fire resistance. Therefore, we cannot stop here.”

“I… I figured you’d say that. I was just thinking the same thing, actually.”

Alex laughed awkwardly, but I didn’t miss the bead of sweat dripping from his forehead.

At this point, the only option was escape.

Sacrificing Alex-niisan as a decoy, we would make our getaway!

“Oniisan, we need to go shear Mira’s fur now, so we’ll be taking our leave.”

“Please wait.”

Lionel firmly grabbed my shoulder. Damn it, I knew we wouldn’t escape the Demon King Lionel.

“Julius-sama, you’re curious about the full extent of your fire resistance, aren’t you?”

“U-uh, yeah, I’m very curious!”

Scary. Lionel’s smile was scarier than ever before. It had an aura befitting a Demon King.

I glanced at Fabienne, Nero, and Mira—they all looked just as stiff.

Sorry, everyone. I’ve dragged you into this mess.
