Chapter 25: Drawbacks

After finishing the farm work, I rested in the villa and waited for the surroundings to grow dark before heading outside again to check on the Wight Knight.

During the day, the Wight Knight hadn’t moved an inch from where it had been summoned. But now that it was dark, it seemed to have started moving, as it was no longer in the spot where I’d left it.

I didn’t think it could have gone far, but since there are no streetlights around here, it was pitch black, and I couldn’t see a thing.

I started feeling a bit anxious about the possibility of being attacked… but then Sheila came outside to join me.

“[Fire]. Sato-san, are you okay?”

“Sheila-san, thank you. That fire… is it magic?”

“Yes. It’s magic, but it’s still real fire, so if you touch it, you’ll get burned.”

The fear I’d felt from the darkness quickly disappeared, replaced by awe at seeing magic for the first time.

Despite being curious about magic, I hadn’t been able to bring myself to ask Sheila to show me before. So this was my first time seeing it up close, and it was amazing—so different from tricks or illusions.

“…Sato-san. Right now, we should focus on the Wight Knight, not magic.”

“—Right. The Wight Knight isn’t where I left it. Do you know where it went, Sheila-san?”

“Yes, I do. It’s walking just beyond the field. I’ll guide you there, so please follow me.”

The ability to sense its presence is incredible.

I followed behind Sheila as she led the way, fixated on the magic flame she held as we headed toward the Wight Knight.

“Oh, it’s really walking. I thought I’d gotten used to it after seeing it so much during the day, but… seeing it upright and moving, it looks even bigger and more intimidating.”

“If it resists, I’ll handle it, so there’s no need to worry. Besides… it hasn’t shown any hostility toward us, so I don’t think it will attack, just like Lime.”

Trusting Sheila’s words, I stepped closer.

When the Wight Knight noticed me, it knelt down and bowed its head.

Considering I spent NP to purchase it, this behaviour was to be expected, but having such a powerful-looking creature submit to me was undeniably satisfying.

“No need to bow. Wight Knight-san, I’ll be relying on you from today onward.”

When I spoke to it, the Wight Knight slowly stood up.

Seeing it up close while standing was even more overwhelming—it exuded an incredible sense of presence.

Feeling reassured by its powerful appearance, I decided to give it a name, just as I had with Lime.

Once again, I chose something simple and easy to remember.

“Wight Knight-san, from now on, I’ll call you Thread.”

The Wight Knight—now Thread—nodded in response, as if it understood what I said.

The name “Thread” came from the two “ito” (糸) characters in its Japanese name, which translate to “thread” in English. Simple reasoning, but it worked.

“I’d like you to work during the night, Thread… let’s see. Could you plow this area for me?”

I brought out a hoe that Velvet-san had for some reason given me and handed it to Thread.

After giving it a quick demonstration, Thread immediately got to work.

“Wow! Sato-san, it’s plowing the field!”

“Yes, it’s a relief to know it listens to instructions. It looks like we can rely on Thread to help with clearing land for the farm.”

“We’re short on manpower, so even if we clear the land, it’s not like we can work it all right away… but this is definitely a step forward.”

“If it could work during the day, it would probably be able to help us with farming, just like us. It feels like undead creatures are so close to being useful, yet just miss the mark.”

“Agreed. I’m sorry my advice wasn’t very helpful…”

“No, no, don’t worry about it. Thread is already working hard for us, and it seems like it could handle farming if we ask it to.”

It’s possible to make it work, but I’m a bit hesitant to have Thread do anything beyond simple tasks.

If it accidentally plants too many seeds or overwaters the crops, I wouldn’t know how to handle the aftermath.

Even when it comes to farming, I’m planning to use the area that Thread is currently clearing as a practice field at first.

If I can determine that undead monsters can handle farming, then, considering their affordable price, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to add more of them.

“I’m glad to hear that. If anything comes up, feel free to consult me anytime. If it’s something I can answer, I’ll gladly help.”

“Thank you. I’ll be relying on you. Well then, shall we head back home for now?”

“Good idea. I’m looking forward to seeing how much progress Thread has made by tomorrow morning.”

I wholeheartedly agreed with Sheila’s words as we left Thread behind and returned to the villa.

Maybe I should consider buying a flashlight to ensure we have light when needed.

With those thoughts in mind, I drifted off to sleep that night.
