Chapter 23: Information About Monsters
The day after Velvet returned, things went back to normal with Sheila and me working on the farm together. However, I was quickly reminded of how much less work can be done with two people compared to three—even if it was just for three days.
Expecting Velvet to work regularly isn’t realistic, so after much hesitation, I decided it was time to use the NP I had saved up.
“Sheila-san, I’d like to discuss something with you after dinner. Would you mind sparing me a bit of time?”
“A discussion? Of course, but when you say it like that, it makes me a bit nervous.”
“Don’t worry, it’s nothing bad. I think it’s a positive matter.”
“I’m curious to know now, but since it’s good news, I’ll save my excitement for after dinner. I’m looking forward to it.”
Sheila smiled cheerfully and headed back into the cottage.
Although I could decide how to use my NP on my own, since I was planning to purchase a monster, I thought it’d be wise to consult Sheila about it.
For now, since it was my turn to cook dinner, I decided to make a dessert as well for the discussion. While considering the cost and what to prepare, I returned to the cottage a bit later than Sheila.
After dinner, we sat down across from each other at the table. Sheila’s gaze was fixated on the pancakes I had made.
I had chosen pancakes since they’re inexpensive to make in large quantities, and judging by her reaction, it seemed like the right choice. The aroma was delightful, and the honey I had drizzled over them added to their appeal. Although the honey was from this world, which made me slightly anxious, the taste test reassured me it would be fine.
“Thank you for taking the time to meet with me. May I start discussing the matter now?”
“Of course! But… can I eat this delicious-looking dish first?”
Sheila couldn’t hide her eagerness.
“Yes, please go ahead. It might be a bit heavy for dessert, but I guarantee the taste.”
“I can eat as much sweet food as I want, so no problem there! I’ll dig in right away.”
Sheila took a generous bite and, pressing her cheeks with her hands, showed an expression of pure bliss.
“This is… amazing! So delicious! I’m in heaven.”
“I’m glad you like it. I kept it simple to save on costs, but adding fruit, whipped cream, or ice cream makes it even better.”
“You’re saying it could get even better? That’s terrifying!”
Despite her words, Sheila was grinning ear to ear as she continued eating.
At this rate, she’d finish before I could even begin the conversation, so I decided to get straight to the point.
“Let’s put the pancake talk aside for now. The reason I called you here is to discuss purchasing a new monster. I’d like your advice on what kind might be best.”
“A new familiar, huh? I’ll do my best to help with any knowledge I have.”
“Thank you! Specifically, I’m looking for a monster that can assist with farm work. Do you know of any monsters that might fit the bill?”
I wasn’t sure if Sheila could answer since she might not view monsters from that perspective.
“For farm work, hmm… For beast-type monsters, there’s the Dirty Mole, Cat Mage, and Green Lemming. For plant-types, there’s the Korobokkuru and Matango. For undead-types, there’s the Wight Knight, Skeleton Swordsman, and Mummy Soul. These are weaker monsters that might be suitable for helping with farming.”
Sheila quickly listed several candidates without hesitation, demonstrating her extensive knowledge of monsters.
I immediately started researching the monsters Sheila mentioned on my tablet. The Dirty Mole looked like, well, a mole. The Matango was something I had already considered, and the undead monsters all seemed like strong candidates.
If they were obedient, undead monsters might be the best choice. They wouldn’t need food and might not even require rest.
“Undead monsters are an interesting option. They probably don’t need food, and they might be able to work without breaks, right?”
“I’m not sure about that. Monsters usually attack humans on sight, so I don’t know much about their ecology. But I doubt they can work endlessly without eating or resting.”
“Good point. In my world, undead typically don’t require sleep or food, but here it’s probably safer to assume they do.”
“Exactly. It’s best to think of them as being like Lime.”
Even if they needed food and rest, undead monsters were humanoid, making them very practical.
Both the Wight Knight and Skeleton Swordsman were affordable, costing 3000 NP each. After accounting for recent expenses, I had 6263 NP left. That meant I could purchase both and significantly increase our workforce.
“After some thought, I’ve decided. I’ll start by purchasing the Wight Knight and Skeleton Swordsman you recommended. They’re affordable, and I can get both of them.”
“I think that’s a good choice. However, I’d recommend starting with just one. There could be unforeseen downsides. Test one first, and if it works well, then get the second.”
“You’re right. Even if they’re inexpensive for monsters, they’re still a considerable investment. I’ll purchase one and evaluate it carefully before deciding on the second.”
“That’s a wise approach.”
I’m glad I consulted Sheila, especially with her final piece of advice.
Just like with Velvet, I’d like to show my appreciation to Sheila in some tangible way, like a salary, but… she already turned me down.
Her reasoning was that she’s only serving as my escort under the king’s orders and that she’s already receiving her compensation from the kingdom.
Even if I tried to come up with some excuse, she probably wouldn’t accept anything from me. So, in the end, the only way I can express my gratitude to Sheila is through cooking.
She really enjoyed the pancakes this time, so maybe whenever I feel like thanking her, I could make her an extra dessert. That might be a good idea.
“…What’s the matter? Are you still lost in thought about something?”
“No, it’s nothing. I’m fine. Thank you so much for everything this time. Would it be okay if I consulted you again if something comes up?”
“Of course. If it’s something I can help with, you can consult me anytime.”
“Thank you. That’s truly reassuring.”
With that conversation, our little consultation session came to a close. I decided to get some sleep to prepare for tomorrow.
As planned, I’ll purchase the Wight Knight to help with farming.
Excited about adding my second familiar after Lime, I drifted off to sleep.
