Chapter 99: Depressed Kyrias
While Kirias was reading a magic book in his room at the magic department, a servant from the infirmary came to return a potion bottle. Kirias glanced at the servant and was about to turn his attention back to the book when the servant called out to him.
“I am glad to hear that the queen has recovered from her illness, Master Kyrias.”
“It was right to have her take the second bottle.”
The servant deliberately averted his gaze and did not reply. Both bottles of the potion that the queen drank were freshly made by Kyrias. And unlike ordinary potions, they were special ones that were infused with as much magical power as possible.
“Yeah? No? If you know something, tell me.”
“I know, or rather, I accidentally overheard it. Could you please keep what I tell you a secret?”
“Of course.”
Kyrias thought, (Accidentally? I can’t imagine that anyone would speak out loud about the Queen’s medical condition. Perhaps they overheard them), but he didn’t say anything.
“While I was cleaning, doctor Dennis was telling his associates that he tried a potion made by a wizard who was an acquaintance of His Majesty’s. After using the third potion, the Queen’s condition immediately improved. Not only that, he himself, who drank the potion as a poison taster, is also feeling very well.”
“Really? Thank you for that valuable information.”
(A third bottle? You mean my potion didn’t work? Even though I put all my magic into it?)
The more magical power put into a potion, the more effective it is. If what this man says is true, then there are wizards who have more magical power than Kyrias out there.
Kyrias hadn’t heard of the potions for commoners.
He did not know about the potions for commoners, because no one would be foolish enough to say to Kyrias, the head of the magic department, “There are a lot of potions on the market that are more effective than yours.”
The man working in the infirmary was a commoner. Until now, he had not been offended even when the 17-year-old Kyrias had been arrogant towards him, even though he was in his 30s (he was the son of a marquis and one of the best wizards in the country. It can’t be helped).
However, Kyrias’s potion did not work on the queen, but another wizards’ potion did. This fact awakened a gloominess hidden deep within his heart. The menial worker told Kyrias, feeling that it served him right.
Although Kyrias was no longer aware of the servant, he was still deeply shocked.
His master, Jusel Leesley, used to have more magical power than him. But now the situation has reversed. Not to mention Grand Master Glidden. There may be many areas where Kyrias is no match for him in terms of skill and knowledge, but he is confident that he overwhelms Glidden in terms of magical power.
“Any other notable wizards… there’s Mai-san who can make special grade potions. But how could Mai be an acquaintance of His Majesty’s? Hmm, there’s no use thinking about it here. Right, let’s go to the ‘hideaway’.”
The ban on eating out is still in effect, but take-out is allowed. A fellow member of the magic Department has said, “That restaurant seems to have started delivering, and we’ve seen delivery people with big backpacks with the name of ‘The Hideaway’ written on them everywhere.”
As Kyrias left the castle, he instinctively started walking faster.
When he arrived at the “Hideaway,” there were several customers who had come to buy take-out lunch.
“Hello. I’m here to buy a meal to-go.”
“Kyrias-kun, it’s been a while. Here is the takeout menu.”
Looking at the menu he was given, he saw that several new items had been introduced during the time he had been away.
“I can wait for later, but please give me ten of these sausage buns and ten of the meat buns.”
“you want to put it off for later?”
“Yes, I’ll wait. I have something I want to talk to you about.”
With that, he sat down in a corner of the store to keep his distance from the other customers.
Mai skillfully prepares food and delivers it to the customers. Delivery staff are constantly coming and going.
Soon, all the customers in the restaurant disappear.
“Sorry to keep you waiting. Here are ten sausage buns and ten meat buns to go.”
There was a young man in the kitchen, so Kyrias lowered his voice to speak to her
“Thank you for bringing the potion to the Queen. It was a great help.”
“Ah!”
Kyrias said this on a whim, but after seeing Mai’s reaction, he was certain that it was Mai who had made the potion after all.
“You must have a lot of magical power to be able to make special grade potions, Miss Mai. I’m amazed.”
“Um… Who told you that?”
“It’s a secret. I was also surprised to learn that you and His Majesty knew each other.”
Mai neither confirms nor denies it. She just looks troubled.
“Here’s the payment. I’ll be back.”
“thank you very much!”
Alone, Mai exhaled with a “phew”. Then she put her hand to her earring and spoke.
“Henry, was that response okay?”
“Yes. Perfect. He’s very smart. I knew he would realize how capable you were, too, but he did so quickly.”
“It just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I think I may have hurt Kyrias-kun’s pride.”
“No, it’s a good experience for him. You don’t have to worry about it. I’ll talk to him.”
Meanwhile, Kyrias, walking with a paper bag in hand, was depressed.
“Until now, I thought I was the one with the most magical power in this country. But it was Mai-san’s potion that made the queen feel better. It wasn’t mine. How embarrassing and shameful.”
He knew that he had been acting overconfident and high-handed until now. He thought he was qualified enough to be allowed to do so. When he returned to the castle with his feelings of unresolved shame and self-loathing, he was approached by a voice.
“Kyrias? What’s the matter, you don’t look well.”
“Oh, Mr. Henry.”
Henry, holding the documents under his arms aside, took a good look at him.*
“Henry, I hear that Mai’s potion worked wonderfully. I put as much magic as I could into the potion I offered the queen. …… You see, I usually limit the amount of magical power sealed into the potion to ensure the quality. But when I heard that the Queen’s condition was not good, I put all my power into the second one.”
Henry felt sorry for Kyrias, who was more depressed than he had ever seen him in the past. He was smart, had extraordinary magical powers, excelled in magical techniques, and was the son of a marquis. He was only seventeen years old. It would be strange if he didn’t become arrogant. Henry watched over him, thinking that when he grew up, he would change his high-handed attitude.
But he never thought that it would be Mai who would break his growing pride.
Moreover, Mai has no intention of competing with Kyrias, nor does she even see him as a rival. She just goes her own way with a smile on her face. This must be even more difficult for Kyrias to bear.
“The queen was able to stay alive because of your potion, Kyrias. No matter how effective a potion is, it is useless if the flame of life is not burning. Your potion was working, you know. So there’s no need to be so disheartened.”
“I guess so. Was it useful?”
Kyrias’s eyes, which had been faint, now seem to gain some strength.
“Your potions were useful, I’m sure of it. So, Kyrias, who told you that Mai was the one who made the potion that the queen drank? It was quite a secret.”
The person who gave me the information was a servant at the castle, but it was my guess that it was Mai-san. The potion that she made and donated during the flood was of a special grade. So I thought there was a good chance it was her, so I went to her ‘hideaway” a little while ago and sort of cornered her.”
Henry was impressed with how well Kyrias took the lead (he thought someone had leaked it, but it was just a masterful deduction).
“Kyrias, Mai doesn’t suspect people too much. She believes what people close to her say, to the point that it is worrisome to watch. She is not like you, who is used to the tricks of the nobles. I wish you’d stop using aristocratic methods on her?”
“Ah, yes. You’re right. I’m sorry. Mai-san has a pure heart, she doesn’t brag, and she doesn’t act all high and mighty. She’s very humble despite having a tremendous amount of magical power. Haa. I should learn from her. Anyway, I’ll deliver this bread to my friends before it gets cold. See you.”
feeling deflated again, Kyrias slumps his shoulders and leaves.
Henry saw him off, saying, “I feel a little sorry for him, but I hope that with your nose broken like that, you grow up and get back on your feet and become a successful wizard again.”
