Chapter 51: The Demon King of the Demon Kingdom

◆◆◆

In a room in the Demon King’s castle…

The room was in tatters, having been wrecked by the Demon King himself.

“Dammit! Damn it all!! They’re all useless, every last one of them!!”

The newly crowned Demon King shouted as he kicked items across his office.

He was furious because, just recently, his forces had been routed in a battle against the new summoned person from the Admos Kingdom. The Demon King had believed that now, with the summoned person still relatively new, it would be the perfect opportunity to dispose of him. However…

The plan failed spectacularly, partly due to the unexpected actions of the summoned person himself. This disastrous outcome was why the Demon King was so enraged.

“Y-Your Majesty, please, calm down…”

A close advisor tried to calm the raging king, but his words only seemed to fuel the flames of the king’s anger.

“I can’t stay silent about this!! If I had been at the frontlines from the beginning, this wouldn’t have happened!!”

The king shouted, and the advisor hurriedly denied his claim.

“N-No, Your Majesty!! You are the Demon King of the Demon Kingdom! It is unthinkable for you to be at the frontlines!”

“Shut up!! If my subordinates had done their jobs properly, this wouldn’t have happened!!”

This new Demon King, while among the highest in magic power in the Demon Kingdom, had a major flaw: a lack of proper judgment.

Even now, he failed to understand his own position and truly believed that victory would have been assured if he had fought at the frontlines himself.

The advisor sighed quietly, careful not to be noticed.

The Demon King, completely oblivious to the sigh, continued his violent outbursts. After a while, he seemed to calm down somewhat, taking a seat in his chair and scratching his head with frustration.

“Aah! If I had known this would happen, I never would’ve become king! The strongest person should be the king, but if the king can’t be at the frontlines, it’s just a loss of power!”

The advisor thought to himself that the king was wrong in his logic.

There is no law stating that the strongest person must become king. The next monarch is simply chosen by the predecessor, and that is the law.

The late queen, Meyleen, had not been chosen by the previous king but had inherited the royal staff from the slain king after Kenta killed him. The nobility recognized her as queen, believing in her intelligence.

The nobles had hoped that Meyleen, who had opposed the territorial expansion policies of the late king and prioritized domestic stability, would restore the crumbling Demon Kingdom.

Meyleen began to restore order in the kingdom, which had been ravaged by the war with the human kingdoms. The nobles believed that under her leadership, the kingdom would soon recover.

However, their hopes were quickly dashed.

Meyleen’s younger brother, Mekido, staged a rebellion against her.

Mekido, believing that strength was the most important trait for a Demon King, argued that Meyleen lacked the necessary power to rule. He overthrew her and took the throne with his military might.

The news of this rebellion devastated the nobles. They had never imagined that her brother, who had no intelligence, would be the one to take the throne.

Since then, the Demon Kingdom had become increasingly aggressive, picking fights with neighboring human kingdoms whenever its strength allowed.

The skirmishes with Weimar were part of the same issue.

Before the kingdom had been fully stabilized, Mekido quickly instigated another war.

Among the demon population, especially the nobility, dissatisfaction with Mekido was growing.

In fact, it was said that if Meyleen had been in charge, she could have restored the kingdom in half the time it took Mekido to do so.

At this rate, the kingdom would be destroyed by that muscle-brained king.

Something had to be done before that happened…

This sentiment was growing, but Mekido himself had no idea.

His image of a king was entirely shaped by his father, who was said to be the strongest in history.

His father possessed unmatched magic power within the Demon Kingdom.

Mekido believed that this strength was the sole reason his father became king.

In reality, the previous king had been not only powerful but also highly intelligent. In times of need, he could even lead from the frontlines. Moreover, he was excellent at commanding his subordinates and managing the kingdom’s internal affairs.

Mekido, however, only focused on his father’s power, ignoring his intelligence, and had convinced himself that this was what a king should be.

As a result, dissatisfaction brewed within the kingdom, and his recent failures in dealing with foreign affairs only added to the discontent.

The advisor thought to himself that this king was beyond saving. However, Mekido’s close associates, who possessed magic power equal to his, were not easy to overthrow, so rebellion was out of the question.

The advisor could only look at Mekido, muttering to himself in disbelief and disdain.

By the way, what was Mekido mumbling about? The advisor strained his ears and heard him muttering, “If only I had let my sister take the throne and I fought at the frontlines…”

The advisor couldn’t help but sigh inwardly. He had been the one to reject that arrangement in the first place.

If there were no one around, the advisor might have let out an exasperated sigh, but with Mekido in front of him, he held back.

Then, Mekido suddenly seemed to have an epiphany and stood up.

“That’s it! I’ll find my sister and have her become queen again!!”

With a look of someone who thought they had a brilliant idea, Mekido declared this. The advisor was left speechless.

After all, Mekido himself had overthrown her. Did he really think anyone would accept such a proposal now?

Moreover, if anyone did agree to it, did Mekido understand that it could cost him his life?

Looking at Mekido, who was clearly excited, the advisor realized that Mekido probably hadn’t thought it through. Just as he was about to offer some advice, a soldier entered the room.

“Excuse me!”

“What is it?”

“Yes! We’ve just received a report from the intelligence division!”

“Alright, let them in.”

“Yes!”

The soldier entered and bowed before reading the report aloud.

“The summoned person from the Admos Kingdom challenged the previous summoned person to a duel and was defeated.”

“What? Are you serious?”

The Admos Kingdom’s summoned person had been the source of Mekido’s frustration.

To hear that this summoned person had challenged the previous summoned person and lost was unexpected.

Mekido stood up in surprise.

“And? Was he killed?”

“Yes! It seems he was slain.”

“…”

Upon hearing the news, Mekido slumped back into his chair, drained of energy.

“Your Majesty?”

“Ah, I don’t know. I feel like someone just stole my vengeance from me.”

“…I see.”

“Wait, the previous summoned person was from the same hometown as the current one, right? Can someone really just kill their fellow countryman like that in another world?”

Mekido furrowed his brow after saying this.

“Seems like I was wrong to leave that guy alone. He’s my father’s enemy… I’ll have to hunt him down eventually.”

“Yes! I also believe he is a dangerous individual. And I believe the humans feel the same way.”

“What do you mean?”

“It seems that Admos is preparing to summon again in order to deal with Kenta Maya.”

At this news, Mekido turned his gaze toward the advisor.

“Hey, what do you think about this?”

“What do you mean?”

“This is the third time in such a short period that another world summoning has been conducted after it hadn’t happened in decades. Is this really okay?”

“…I apologize, Your Majesty. I don’t quite understand what you are concerned about.”

Hearing this from his advisor, Mekido scratched his head.

It seemed to be a habit of his.

“No, I can’t explain it well in words… but I just can’t shake the feeling that something bad is about to happen.”

While Mekido lacked the governing ability to rule the kingdom as a king, he was very skilled at reading the atmosphere and sensing even the smallest discomfort in situations, especially when it came to combat.

Now, Mekido, without understanding the exact reason, was telling them he had a bad feeling about the situation.

“…It seems that we should remain cautious, Your Majesty.”

“Yeah… Hey.”

“Yes!”

“Isn’t it true that other world summoning can only be done in Lindor?”

“Yes, that’s correct!”

“Then, send the intelligence division to Lindor. If anything happens, have them report back immediately.”

“Understood! Excuse me!”

After the soldier left the room, Mekido’s face, which had been filled with anger earlier, was now serious and focused.

“…What is it? What exactly am I feeling uneasy about?”

As Mekido muttered this while gazing out the window, the advisor, observing him, decided to support the king a little longer, feeling a renewed sense of determination.
