Chapter 200: Hunting the Worms

“[Water Bullet]!”

“GYAOOOOOOOOOOO!”

Rest’s magic struck the worm directly.

A high-pressure blast of water magic, akin to a water laser, slammed into the creature, causing it to roar in fury.

“GYAOOOOOOOOOOO!”

“I see… Water magic isn’t very effective.”

Rest muttered.

Despite being hit, the worm showed little sign of slowing down and continued its rampage.

The monster battling Rest was a worm—specifically, a child. After defeating the first one, Rest continued exploring the swamp. By now, he had already encountered and fought multiple worms—this being his fourth. All of them were children; he had yet to face the parent.

As Rest fought, he experimented with various spells, analyzing the worm’s weaknesses.

“Wind magic is effective. Water and earth magic barely do anything. Fire and lightning are decent, I guess.”

“GYAOOOOOOOOOO!”

“[Windstorm]!”

“GYAOOOOOOOOOO!?”

Unleashing an advanced wind spell, Rest summoned raging blades of wind that shredded the worm’s massive body. The spell, designed to scatter wind blades over a wide area, proved devastating against the worm’s large size.

“GYAAAAAAAAAA!”

Bleeding purple ichor, the worm slammed its body into the ground, trying to crush Rest under its weight.

“YAAAAAAAH!”

“GYA!?”

Suddenly, a figure darted in with lightning speed, delivering a powerful kick to the worm’s head. Yuri had entered the fray. Her incredible physical abilities allowed her kicks to cut through human torsos, and now they stunned the worm, slamming its head into the muddy ground.

“Alright, now’s my chance!”

“Yeah… Leave it to me!”

Rest summoned another spell, and the air around him dimmed slightly as a radiant orb of light formed in his hand.

“[Amaterasu]!”

A condensed beam of light blasted through the worm’s head.

“GYA…”

With a pitiful groan, the worm collapsed and sank into the mud, lifeless.

“So… Light magic, huh? Makes sense—it lives underground, so it would naturally be weak to light.”

After this fourth encounter, Rest had gained a solid understanding of the worm’s weaknesses. With this knowledge, he felt confident about facing the parent worm on more favorable terms.

“…Glorious.”

Urla whispered as she watched Rest’s battle from a distance. Though her words didn’t reach him, Rest could feel her intense gaze from behind her curtain of long bangs.

“Magnificent. Truly impressive.”

Ostrey, a soldier of the Lavender Border Marquis family, added, stepping forward to praise him on behalf of his master.

“Four juvenile worms defeated, and despite casting multiple advanced spells, your magic power shows no signs of depletion… I’m in awe.”

“Thanks. Even if it’s flattery, I’ll take it.”

Rest replied with a wry smile.

“It’s no flattery… No, truly, it’s astonishing.”

Ostrey insisted.

“Yes… Rest-sama is amazing.”

Urla quietly added, nodding in agreement.

“A truly remarkable and impressive display of magic. Your one-against-many battle prowess inspires renewed respect… or so the young lady says.”

“Wait… There’s no way she said something that long, right?”

Urla and her attendant were as eccentric as ever, but there was no mistaking that Rest was being praised.

“That makes four of them. Where could the parent worm be?”

Despite their extensive search of the wetlands, they had yet to encounter the parent worm. It didn’t show up on magic detection, nor did they catch any trace of its presence.

“If only the ground were firmer, the search would go so much more smoothly.”

Yuri grumbled, pulling her foot out of the muddy terrain with a dissatisfied expression.

The swamp was, as expected, a wetland. Half of it consisted of small and large marshes, with some areas deep enough to submerge an adult. Many spots required boats to traverse or had mud so thick that progress was nearly impossible. While Rest used magic to create makeshift pathways, moving through the swamp still took much longer than traversing flatlands.

“It’s almost evening. Let’s retreat and try again tomorrow.”

Rest suggested.

Staying overnight in a swamp teeming with powerful monsters was a horrifying thought. Add the wet, sticky mud, and it became even less appealing.

“Camping… yay.”

Urla muttered with a rare show of enthusiasm.

Yuri, on the other hand, clapped her hands together, her excitement evident.

“Oh, camping! That sounds fun!”

“The young lady suggests we leave the wetlands and camp on solid ground. Constantly leaving the plains only to return delays the search indefinitely. We should establish a base nearby and dedicate ourselves to a thorough exploration.”

The attendant explained.

“That makes sense…”

Rest nodded, agreeing with the suggestion.

Exploring the swamp was far more time-consuming than flatlands, and setting up a nearby base was the logical course of action for a long-term expedition.

“Luckily, I’ve mastered a monster-repelling barrier. Let’s find a suitable spot and set up.”

The group retreated from the muddy and swampy wetlands to a dry, flat area. By the time they arrived, the sunset painted the western sky a vivid orange.

Using magic to clean themselves off, they pitched tents and established their campsite for the night.
