Chapter 183: The Barrier is Formed

“Alright, let’s get started. You brats, make sure you’re watching carefully!”

Once Lucas finished setting up the magical tools, Maitis began the ritual to construct the barrier.

At the center of the tools, arranged in a circle with a diameter of about ten meters, Maitis stood and struck the ground several times with her staff.

Rest and the others stood a little apart, observing the ritual. Naturally, the mages, Rest and Isis, were particularly focused, but even Yuri, Lubase, and Andrew watched with interest.

“Normally… to construct a barrier, the caster either uses their own magic power or the stored magic power in the tools or catalysts. Once the magic runs out, the barrier will collapse.”

Maitis struck the ground again.

At the center of the magic realm, the point where magic energy from the earth surged… directly above the dragon’s hole.

If one observed closely, faint particles of light could be seen rising from the ground.

“But… this time, I’ll be consuming the magic power flowing from the dragon’s vein instead. Unless the magic power of the dragon’s vein is depleted for some reason, or the magic circle itself is destroyed, the barrier’s effects will last indefinitely… Well, there’s the issue of long-term degradation, but that’s hundreds of years down the line, so I suppose it’s a matter of whether the kingdom will last that long.”

“!?”

Lines of light began to radiate around Maitis.

The lines floating in the air formed a circle and, as they moved, began to create intricate geometric patterns in the air.

“Now then… The barrier I’ll be creating will involve layering four different barriers. There may be many mages who can create one or two, but… layering four? Only someone like this old hag can manage that.”

It seemed there was a hint of self-praise in the statement, but more importantly, the magic circle in the air had been completed.

The glowing magic circle was transcribed onto the ground, burning a pattern into the earth.

“First, the barrier against monsters.”

“This is…”

Rest tilted his head upwards, realizing the magic in the air had visibly decreased.

In its place, the magic circle on the ground began to shine brightly.

“Next, the second one. The barrier of fertility.”

The shape of the first magic circle was expanded as the second circle spread outward.

Care was taken not to erase the monster-repelling barrier, so the second pattern grew outward, forming a larger shape.

The barrier of abundance literally provided growth for crops.

It redirected the power that had been feeding weeds and monsters into the land, converting it into a force that would bring forth an abundance of crops.

“And third, the barrier against disease.”

The magic circle continued to expand outward.

This time, it was a barrier designed to prevent the spread and outbreak of disease.

As the magic circle grew larger, Rest could feel the magic in the air thinning more and more. It was now only slightly denser than in a regular human settlement.

“Finally… the fourth. The barrier to prevent crime.”

“Crime prevention…?”

Isis murmured in confusion.

Though she did not speak it aloud, Rest shared her doubt.

The barriers for “monster repelling,” “abundance,” and “disease prevention” were well-known and documented in books, and were part of Rest’s own knowledge. They were commonly used in the royal capital and in larger towns.

(But… I’ve never heard of a “crime prevention” barrier. What kind of effect does it have… does it literally prevent crime?)

Rest glanced over toward Andrew, who gave him a wry smile and shrugged. He seemed to know something about it, but it wasn’t the right time to ask.

“Whoa…!”

“This is…!”

Soon, the now-large magic circle was complete.

The glowing, intricate shape looked like a beautiful equation, yet it also resembled a delicate painting. The four-layered magic circle absorbed the magic energy overflowing from the dragon’s vein, creating a barrier that would benefit the people’s daily lives.

The magic in the air thinned further. The concentration of magic settled to a level no different from the outside of the magic realm.

An invisible dome spread out from the magic circle on the ground, enveloping the center of the magic realm.
