Chapter 323: Making sweets?

I had successfully greeted Fabienne’s parents and given them the gifts. Good, good, I’m starting to feel more at ease. However, I mustn’t let my guard down just yet.

“Today, aside from matters concerning Fabienne, I have one more thing to discuss.”

“What is it?”

“You are aware that Count Heine is planning to establish a new trading company, correct?”

“Y-yes, of course, I know.”

Baron Amber showed signs of confusion at my reference to him as “father-in-law.” It seems he’s not quite ready to drop the formalities, even though I’m going to be a son-in-law. Perhaps the power dynamics still lean in my favor; after all, a Count holds quite a high position.

I summarized the background so far. Unlike the baron, who seemed to have a general understanding, the baroness and Fabienne were surprised by the details.

“A trading company of that scale is being established?”

“It’s astonishing. Most of the products being sold will be those created by you, Julius-sama.”

Fabienne looked enchanted. Wow, I had thought children in this world were quite mature, but I hadn’t expected them to be this much so. A ten-year-old shouldn’t have such a discerning gaze.

“Regarding this, I have a request for you, father-in-law. It’s not just you; I have a request for Fabienne as well.”

“What is it?”

“What is it?”

I explained that I intended to turn hot cookies, which I hadn’t planned to sell at first, into a product and that I would like Fabienne to help with their production.

“Of course, I’ll pay you a salary, and I’ll do my best to accommodate your wishes regarding the treatment. Could I count on your assistance?”

“Hmm…”

Baron Amber seemed to be deep in thought but wouldn’t outright refuse. Besides, Fabienne wouldn’t have to make hot cookies all day long.

The real question was how Fabienne felt about it, and… she looked eager. Her eyes were sparkling. She does love making potions, after all.

“Father, I want to do it! I’m already part of the Heine family, aren’t I?”

“Understood. Go ahead and give it a try. Just don’t cause any trouble for Julius-sama.”

“Yes!”

“Um, father-in-law? You can just call me by my name…”

“That might be a bit too much.”

Baron Amber replied with a serious expression. His humble demeanor is a bit of a drawback for him as a father-in-law. He should treat me that way since I’m becoming his son.

He seemed to notice my confusion, wearing a somewhat uncomfortable expression.

“By the way, can I make a request as well?”

“Of course. If it’s something I can do, I’m all ears.”

“We would like you to make glass pens for us as well…”

“Understood. I’ll make matching ones as a gift for you. Also, I’ll bring you a magical stone heater.”

“That would be wonderful.”

It seems that Baron Amber is trying to show his consideration in his own way. By making mutual requests rather than simply accepting mine, he likely thinks it reduces the burden on both sides.

Perhaps I should also give them fountain pens along with the glass pens and magical stone heaters, as a keepsake of our engagement.

I plan to discuss this with Fabienne and ask her parents about their preferences.

“Fabienne, would you like to make hot cookies together? I brought the ingredients. Since you’re so skilled, I’d love to hear your opinions on different flavors we can try.”

“Of course! Father, Mother, is it alright if we go to the alchemy room?”

“Go ahead. We’ll discuss the labor conditions here.”

That should be sufficient for now. The details will be settled by her father and Baron Amber. It’s not something for us kids to interfere with. Well, I guess it’s more like I’m leaving it to them completely.

Fabienne led me to the Amber family’s alchemy room. It was quite well-equipped. It showed how much Baron Amber expected from Fabienne.

“Making hot cookies is easy. It’s almost the same method as making regular cookies,” I explained.

“Have you ever made cookies before, Julius-sama?”

“Yeah, sort of. What about you, Fabienne?”

She shook her head from side to side. I see, even though she’s a baron’s daughter, she’s still a noble. Cooking isn’t something they typically do. Maybe my perspective is the odd one here. But Nero is quite good at baking cookies, right? She has surprisingly high “girl power.”

“Well then, let’s make some together. We can also whip up some ordinary cookies, not just magic potions. Nero is really good at it.”

“Thank you very much!”

“Kyuu!”

Mira reacted sharply to the mention of cookies. That glutton! She was already wagging her tail excitedly. She must be in a good mood. I can’t serve her anything less than perfect cookies.

As I taught Fabienne how to make them, we mixed the ingredients. Even though it was a potion, it was a simple one that ordinary people could make. However, making potions is still restricted; only those with the proper qualifications are allowed to do so.

I wondered if there might be a way for someone without a qualification to make potions if someone qualified was supervising them. That would reduce Fabienne’s burden significantly.

I arranged the hot cookies and the regular cookies on the iron plate. Once everything was gathered, I placed it in the preheated oven, and a delightful aroma began to fill the air.

I didn’t think it would happen, but just in case, I scooped Mira up to prevent her from jumping up and grabbing the cookies.

“Julius-sama, the potions you make are quite mysterious, aren’t they? They always have such a delicious sweet scent,” Fabienne remarked.

“R-really? I hadn’t noticed.” I replied, a bit caught off guard.

Now that she mentioned it, it does seem like I’ve been making a lot of sweet potions. Is it because I’m a child? Or is it that I crave sweet things due to my youthful body?

If I’m not careful, Fabienne might start to think I have a sweet tooth. I do eat my vegetables, too, without being picky!
