Chapter 55: The Victim of This Story

“This is just the worst. How did you find out…?”

Lena sighed heavily, sulking in front of me. I was at a loss for words.

Pinned with most of the blame? Found out? Wait—no one told me any of this.

Thinking it over, I recalled a part of the anime. When Lloyd and his group were caught by the military police, it seemed like Lloyd had the heaviest charges, supposedly because he was the main culprit behind all their crimes. But from the way Lena spoke, it sounded like it was all a setup by her and the others.

As I was processing this, Lena gave a slight smirk.

“Well, it doesn’t matter. Kane’s in your place now. He might be reckless, but he’s more than willing to take all the blame for us.”

I widened my eyes at her words. In the short time I hadn’t seen him, Kane had changed almost beyond recognition. I’d thought he’d just become overconfident from a bit of flattery, but there was more to it than that.

…So, they’d been using Kane this way too?

Seeing my stunned silence, Lena let out a derisive snort.

“Compared to all the time I had to spend flattering you, Kane’s a lot easier to handle.”

“All those years of flattery?”

“Of course. What, still pretending you didn’t know?”

Lena glared at me, sighing heavily. Her words stuck with me. Thinking back to the anime, there was never a scene showing exactly when Lloyd had joined the party. But if I took Lena’s words at face value, then Lloyd had been manipulated by her and her group for years—just like Kane.

If that were true… then was Lloyd actually a bad guy from the start? Or could he be… a victim in this story?

“Lloyd-sama?”

“Lloyd-san? Are you alright?”

Lilina and Alicia’s worried voices pulled me from my thoughts. Realizing how lost in thought I’d been, I quickly lifted my head.

“Oh, yeah. I’m fine, no problem.”

Right—this wasn’t the time to be overthinking things.

With Lena captured, we now had a head start on Kane’s group. We couldn’t afford to waste any more time.

“Alright, we’re heading out.”

“Huh? W-wait, what about me? What’s going to happen to me?”

As I started to leave Lena behind, she called out to me in a panic.

I turned back, thought for a moment, and then spoke up.

“Adventurers pass through here pretty often. If you’re lucky, someone will find you.”

“W-wait! Are you serious?”

“Oh, one more thing. You’re free to try and catch up with Kane, but I wouldn’t recommend it. Without Cain’s ‘support,’ you’d probably just end up killed by monsters if you go too deep into the forest.”

At that, Lena’s face went pale.

Not that it really mattered—only small monsters showed up in this area, so she likely wouldn’t be in danger. But I kept that to myself.

As I turned to go, Lena shouted desperately.

“W-wait! At least untie me before you leave!”

We ignored her protests and continued deeper into the forest.

But as we walked, her words stayed with me, lingering in my mind.
