Chapter 170: Paving the plains

Continuing the task of burning away the weeds growing in the center of the plains and paving the ground.

Yesterday, we defeated a large number of monsters, including corrosive beasts, so there weren’t many monsters today.

Despite the increased workload, progress was smooth.

「[Firestorm] [Hardening] [Stone Wall]」

“Again… Amazing. Your magic power is incredible.”

While keeping watch for monsters, Isis spoke up.

“You’re casting three spells repeatedly, and yet there’s no sign of your magic running out. Especially [Firestorm], which is advanced magic that consumes a lot of magic power… What is going on with your body?”

At first, Isis seemed impressed, but now she looked a bit exasperated.

For a student at the academy, casting advanced spells a few times would be considered exceptional. If someone could cast them ten times, they could even become a court magician.

“Rest, your magic power rivals that of the sages on the Sage Council… Honestly, I’m in awe.”

“My magic capacity is the only thing that’s abundant. When it comes to output and technique, there are plenty of wizards better than me.”

In truth, aside from his magic capacity, Rest couldn’t surpass Isis in anything else.

Aisis was faster at casting spells, and if they clashed using the same spell, Rest would surely lose.

(I struggled against Rodel, even though I had more magic power… In the end, endurance alone isn’t enough to win a magic duel.)

If this were an athletic competition, Rest would be a long-distance runner.

His stamina was limitless, but when it came to sprinting, there were many who could surpass him.

“Isis, if we fought head-on without any tricks, you’d be stronger than me, wouldn’t you?”

“I don’t think you’d lose so easily. You’re too modest.”

Isis shrugged.

As the leader of the Executive Council, Isis was the top student in the magic department.

Her abilities were comparable to that of a court magician.

“Rest, you’re humble by nature. I think you should take more pride in yourself… *munch munch*”

“Yuri… What are you eating?”

Meanwhile, Yuri joined the conversation, chewing on something.

Yuri, who recently developed a gluttonous attribute, was holding a bright red fruit.

“Oh, I found some wild raspberries in the bushes earlier. Rest, want some?”

Yuri offered the fruit with a smile.

The brightly colored raspberries exuded a tangy aroma and looked delicious, but…

“…They’re huge.”

Despite their raspberry-like shape, they were about the size of an apple.

Not only that, but they were heavy, feeling more like holding a shot put.

It was probably another case of abnormal growth from absorbing the magic of this cursed land.

They had been so focused on burning the weeds that they hadn’t noticed, but there might have been similar fruits hidden among the undergrowth.

“Whoa… Seriously…?”

“You have courage, Yuri… Biting into it so recklessly is rather careless.”

Lubase looked appalled, while Isis smiled wryly.

Argyle and Rail kept their distance, not joining the conversation.

“Do you guys want some too? I found plenty, so I can share.”

“No thanks, stay away from me!”

“Hmm… You’re offering some to me as well?”

Lubase snapped, putting distance between himself and Yuri, while Isis accepted the fruit but looked at it suspiciously without taking a bite.

“It’s tasty though… That’s a shame.”

Last night, Yuri had eaten monster meat without hesitation, showing that despite being a marquis’s daughter, she could eat just about anything.

“…Well, I can always use magic to detoxify it.”

Rest made up his mind and took a bite of the large, heavy raspberry.

As soon as the flesh hit his tongue, a burst of tartness and sweetness exploded in his mouth.

“Ugh… This is… quite strong.”

Sour, sweet, and indescribably complex—it was hard for his brain to process the taste.

It wasn’t bad, but he couldn’t exactly call it delicious either. It reminded him of the time he had accidentally eaten an astringent persimmon in his previous life.

However, the seeds were massive, gritty, and unpleasant.

“It has a unique flavor, doesn’t it? I don’t hate it.”

“…I see. Well, eating it feels a bit much.”

Rest looked down at the half-eaten raspberry, unsure of what to think.

“Hmm… Maybe it would be easier to eat if we made it into jam, juice, or dried fruit.”

Or perhaps fruit wine would work as well.

The intense sourness of the fruit would probably be just right when diluted with water.

“Ah, that sounds great! Let’s try it when we get back. Viola and Primula would love it!”

Yuri, overjoyed, secured several raspberries to take back as souvenirs.

Viola and Primula were sure to be shocked when they saw those giant raspberries.

“If we can process them successfully, they might even become a new specialty product…”

A new specialty could increase the territory’s income.

In that sense, Yuri’s gluttonous tendencies might prove useful.

“Just… don’t pick up and eat random things too often, alright?”

“Oh, there’s a snake over there. Shall we roast it and give it a try?”

“Stop it!”

“Shhhhhhh!”

Yuri, drooling at the sight of a large snake emerging from the bushes, quickly attacked it with magic.

While Rest trusted Yuri’s adventurous palate to some extent, bringing such a creature back would surely make Viola and Primula faint.

So, they roasted the snake thoroughly, turning it into char before it could be considered for consumption.
