Chapter 159: The Battle with the Corroding Beast
The evil lion Sabnock had ruled as the apex predator of the magic plains for over a century. Its minions, the Corroding Beasts, while not as powerful as Sabnock itself, were still formidable foes. Around five Corroding Beasts appeared, matching the number of fighters on Rest’s side, excluding the healer, Rail the priest.
Whether enraged by the death of their kin or the burning of their territory, the monsters let out furious roars and charged.
“Everyone, stay alert!”
Rest warned his comrades.
For four of them, it was their first time encountering these creatures.
“Their saliva is corrosive! Even a small hit could be fatal. Don’t get too close!”
“Understood!”
Despite the warning, Lubase kicked off the ground and rushed toward one of the Corroding Beasts. Though Rest had told them not to get close, Lubase ignored this and moved in for an attack.

“GYAO!”
“Too slow.”
The Corroding Beast tried to counter, but by the time it reacted, Lubase had already struck. In a blur of motion, Lubase severed the beast’s long tongue, followed by its front leg.
“GYAAAAAAAAA…!!!!!!”
“This is the end.”
With the monster off-balance, Lyubase delivered a final, precise slash, severing the monster’s head, which dropped lifelessly to the ground. Although it was only his second time facing these creatures, Lubase achieved a flawless victory, leaving no room for retaliation.
“Take this!”
“GYAAAO!?”
At the same time, Yuri kicked a stone at another Corroding Beast. The stone, launched with incredible speed, struck the creature’s skull with the force of a bullet.
“Here’s the finisher!”
“GY…!”

As the beast staggered, Yuri closed the distance in an instant. With a kick as swift and deadly as a scythe, she sliced the Corroding Beast clean in half, killing it instantly.
Remarkably, Yuri hadn’t used any physical enhancement magic, yet her sheer leg strength was astonishing. If the target had been a soccer ball, it would have exploded the moment she kicked it.
“【Lightning Cannon】!”
Isis’s combat style is typical of a mage, relying on powerful long-range attacks. She keeps her distance, firing off magic to prevent the enemy from getting close. Opting for lightning attacks, she likely aimed to paralyze the Corroding Beasts and slow their movements. Even if they withstood the first strike, they couldn’t handle the second or third, eventually collapsing.
“OOOOOOOOOOOOO!”
Meanwhile, Argyle, the veteran knight who hadn’t stood out much so far, faced off against a charging Corroding Beast. Rest was concerned, but Argyle deftly dodged the beast’s corrosive saliva and unleashed a strike imbued with magic.
“【Sky Slash】!”
“GYAO!”
The wind-enhanced slash tore across the Corroding Beast’s face. It survived the initial blow, but the second and third strikes found their mark.
“Hmph!”

With the monster weakened, Argyle closed in and delivered the final blow, driving his sword into the back of its neck, piercing the medulla, its vital life center. Though he hadn’t been prominent during the investigation, in battle, he proved his strength, showing he was truly the veteran knight he claimed to be.
“GYAO!”
The last remaining Corroding Beast turned tail, attempting to flee. With its comrades slain, it had smartly assessed it couldn’t win alone.
“…Well, not a bad decision.”
It was a surprisingly intelligent move for a monster. Of course, they wouldn’t let it escape.
“【Amaterasu】.”
“GYAAAAAAAAA…”
Rest fired a beam of light at the fleeing Corroding Beast, striking it from behind and piercing straight through from its tail to its head, killing it instantly.
Although Rest had appeared to be watching the battle, he had been gathering light into his Dark Star. This time, he restrained the amount of light absorbed to avoid plunging the area into total darkness, thinking it would inconvenience his comrades. The energy gathered was smaller, but still more than enough to defeat the enemy.
“All right, no problems. The battle’s over.”
There were no signs of reinforcements, signaling the end of the day’s final battle. Rest, Lubase, Yuri, Isis, and even Argyle had shown their combat prowess. As long as they remained vigilant, they could proceed with the investigation safely.
“…Uh, good work, everyone.”
Rail, the priest, looked slightly uncomfortable, but given that no one had been injured, it seemed understandable.
