Chapter 4: President Leda
“Seta and Rimana? Those two are always like that. Now, let’s start talking about work.”
After hearing everything at the guild office, Saran and I called out to Rolo and Fimia, who were preparing for camping, and headed to the large tent that served as the base for the Leda Adventure Company.
Originally, we had planned to leave it to the adventurers rather than the adventurer company, but thanks to Saran’s suggestion, we ended up with the idea of “dispatching one adventurer company in collaboration with the guild.”
I thought there might be clashes, but so far there haven’t been any complaints from the adventurers… according to reports from Seta and Rimana. It seems like Leda is handling things well.
“You seem to be getting along well with the adventurers.”
“Of course. We’re adventurers too, after all. It’s just a matter of whether you’re part of a group or not. Besides, I’ve fallen for the guild master.”
“Huh?”
“You remember, right? You said before that all the adventurers in Malhas are in parties.”
“Yeah, I remember.”
It was getting tiresome discussing individuals, parties, and adventure companies, so I vaguely remembered suggesting to Leda that everyone should just be part of the “Malhas” party.
“That was impressive. If everyone is in a party, it means everyone is like family. At least, that’s how it is for me. I’ll do my best as a mom for everyone’s sake.”
“Ah, so…”
Saran shrugged slightly.
It was rare for him, who rarely smiled in public, to show such an expression.
“What’s wrong?”
“She’s called ‘Big Mother’ around here.”
“Don’t laugh, you snarky glasses!”
It seemed that this “Big Mother” had helped a lot here at the Deep Monitoring Outpost without my knowledge. With the current situation where I couldn’t keep an eye on everything at the scene, someone taking on such leadership was quite helpful.
“Nevertheless, we should thank her for that. I did have some concerns at first, so leaving it to you was the right choice, Leda.”
“I don’t mind being praised by you. …Well, let’s get down to business.”
With a somewhat serious atmosphere, Leda spread out a large map on the table.
It was a highly detailed map of unexplored areas with various annotations.
“This is the map of the forest. And this is the map of the first floor of the dungeon at the same scale. This is what shows the differences when you overlay them.”
As they overlaid them, Saran’s expression changed slightly as he looked at them.
I couldn’t hide my surprise either.
“The surface distribution is wider.”
“Yes. It seems to have added a bit of mystery.”
Dungeons are basically the same size on each floor.
However, judging from this map, the area of influence of the dungeon on the surface is much wider than the first underground floor.
“Is it related to the submerged areas?”
“There’s a possibility. Also… it might be that the second underground floor is larger.”
As we pondered, Leda remembered something and told us a fact.
“Oh, and… our scout went through the forest to the other side.”
“What? Is she safe?”
“Yeah. It took a pretty big detour, but it seems the other side of the forest is at the foot of the Redecor Mountain. She roughly drew an outline of the outer edge and came back.”
Leda smiled at us, who were surprised, as she placed a parchment on the table.
I had heard that the Leda Adventure Company was a small but elite group, but I never expected them to go through the forest like this. …Honestly, I was a bit frustrated, as I had considered doing it myself at this site.
“Can we call her here?”
“Well, she said she has something she wants to check, so she’s in the middle of going through the forest again. I think she’ll be back in about a week.”
Hearing Leda’s words, I thought for a moment.
We need to prioritize.
This unexplored area seems to have some influence that distorts the sense of direction the further you go. Probably, the distortion of the providence by the “Silver Ten Triangle” is causing a distortion in cognition.
Therefore, we set up a base for the dungeon near the surface, where the influence doesn’t get too serious.
However, if there’s actually someone missing, it’s no longer an unexplored area.
If there’s a precedent, it may be time to start investigating the opposite side by passing through the forest.
It takes a scout a week for a round trip.
If it takes about three days one way, this investigation was supposed to be for information gathering and entry into the dungeon underground. But if there’s a possibility of it ending in failure, it might be better to seek guaranteed results on the opposite side.
“Jurg, there’s no need to rush for an answer. I understand how you feel.”
“Yeah, it’s a bad habit of mine. I’ll leave it to your plan.”
Saran nodded at my words and turned to Leda.
“Leda-san, thank you for the valuable information. Let’s take it back and discuss it with our comrades, then hold a strategy meeting tomorrow.”
“That’s a good idea. We’re just your errand runners. Just ask us what you need and we’ll do the running.”
“Look, Jurg. That’s the attitude of a proper pawn.”
“Sorry, I’m a pawn with a bad attitude.”
As we exchanged light banter, Leda laughed.
In her bold voice, befitting the leader of adventurers,
“You’re quite the snarky one, Saran. As expected of the ‘player.'”
“Yes, but rest assured. I won’t treat pawns carelessly.”
“I know. You have a bit of a soft spot for a noble.”
Laughing at Leda’s remark, Saran showed a somewhat disgruntled expression.
Well, compared to before, he had softened up a bit.
Perhaps that seemed like weakness.
“It seems you have a bit of a misunderstanding about me, don’t you?”
“It’s your fault for not showing up at drinking parties.”
“…I’ll prepare some good wine. Be prepared for a lecture, Leda McCart.”
“Sounds good. I don’t think a noble’s son like you can outdrink me, though.”
A good taunt, fitting for an adventurer.
Even Saran, as a seasoned adventurer, had no choice but to accept it.
“Alright. But it’s after work.”
“Wash your neck and wait. I’ll definitely crush you and get you completely drunk.”
Saran stood up with a small sigh.
Despite looking calm, his narrowed eyes behind the glasses showed determination.
Finally, he was starting to embrace the ways of adventurers.
“Let’s go, Jurg.”
“Yeah. Oh, right… Leda, I want to give a reward to whoever completes the exploration. I’m not sure how the Leda Adventure Company will take it, so can you let me know tomorrow?”
“Sure thing. See you tomorrow then!”
With a cheerful wave to the smiling female president, we left the tent of the Leda Adventure Company.
