Chapter 73: Georg and the Irregular

Georg’s unit divides soldiers into several squads and advances. The map obtained by the spy is excellent, and their unit progresses through the mine without any major issues.

“The accuracy of this map is impressive, Georg-sama.”

“Yeah, indeed. Seems like Grace’s efforts occasionally pay off.”

Georg casually responds to the knight’s praise for the map with a sigh of relief. Indeed, this map is proving to be very useful. However, he can’t imagine the struggles Grace went through to create it.

Well, they can obtain it effortlessly without any effort. Yes… with power, everything becomes easy!

Grinning as he takes up the sword made of orichalcum, a metal imbued with powerful magic obtained as a reward for the reinforcements this time, he chuckles.

In the end, the powerful always win. This sword, originally created as a symbol of the cooperation between humans and dwarves when founding Dwell, ended up in the hands of the powerless king of Dwell and eventually came into his possession. If you want something, just take it. Georg is convinced that his father’s thinking is correct. Yet, despite rebelling against it, he recalls the face of Grace, who is given the same orders as him by his father, and feels uncomfortable.

“It’s the ants!”

Just then, screams erupt from up ahead. It seems they’ve encountered the mine ants. Perhaps there was an error in this map?

“Calm down! Follow the training, split into squads and proceed! From now on, expect to face the mine ants head-on!”

“Yes!”

Georg’s brief remark momentarily unsettles his inexperienced troops, but they quickly regain their composure. It’s not as if they have extensive experience in actual combat.

Forming squads of five, Georg’s unit fights the mine ants to advance. They cannot progress in large numbers through the narrow tunnels, so Georg constantly rotates exhausted squads with fresh ones and pushes forward.

“Hmph, I know the disadvantage of fighting in narrow tunnels! Besides, my elite guard is the one in charge. There’s no way we’ll lose to mere monsters.”

The ones he entrusts with command are his elite guard, experienced in combat though inferior to Georg. He believes in their strength to the extent that even Kyle could be matched with three of them.

Georg’s unit has been advancing faster than Grace anticipated. It seems like they’re on a winning streak, but the sudden end begins.

“Gyaaah!”

It came suddenly. No, they were probably lying in wait, attached to the ceiling. A single mine ant fell from the top, landing among Georg’s soldiers.

This particular mine ant was larger than usual, and there was something akin to intelligence in its eyes. It rampaged recklessly, tearing through Georg’s subordinates one by one… It even struck down one of the elite guards who attempted to attack it.

“Clear the way! I’ll handle this!”

With that command, his subordinates made way as Georg rushed forward, attacking the mine ant.

*Clang!*

Accompanied by the sound of metal, his strike was caught by the mine ant’s sturdy arm… only to slice through it effortlessly.

“Haha! So this is orichalcum!”

The sword, which effortlessly sliced through the mine ant made of mithril as if it were paper, elicited an involuntary exclamation of admiration from Georg.

Thanks to catching it with its arm, the mine ant managed to avoid a direct hit, but its arm, which had intercepted the sword, fell to the ground with a thud.

As Georg prepared to deliver the finishing blow, the mine ant scattered his subordinates and made a dash, blending into the swarm of other mine ants.

“If you spot a giant mine ant, stay alert! If necessary, call for me!”

Despite feeling uneasy about the mine ant’s behavior, which prioritized its own safety over attacking, Georg resumes the march. This time, he joins the frontline to slice through the mine ants.

At that moment, he must have been exhilarated by the strength of his new weapon. Although someone as experienced in combat as him understood the danger of leaving irregularities on the battlefield unaddressed…
