Chapter 81: Mimura

“Maryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!”

Arthur’s agonizing cry echoed on the battlefield.

I was surprised by the sudden, anguished cry and looked in the direction of Arthur’s gaze. There, I saw a person on horseback… and beneath the horse’s hooves, a figure lay with a short sword stuck in them. Could that Arthur’s agitation… could it be Mary?

“Mia, Kuzuha, Mary’s in danger. Stick with me.”

They quickly understood the situation as they looked in the direction I pointed.

“Eh, wha… no, no way… Kuu-chan, come with me. We have to save her!”

What in the world is happening? Isn’t the person on that horse General Gibson? Wasn’t he an ally!?

Damn it, if I approach carelessly, Mary might be taken hostage. Arthur is rushing towards Mary… If we don’t act quickly, it’ll be too late.

“Arthur, stop! If you go now, Mary will be taken hostage, and we won’t make it in time. We’ll save Mary, so please, Arthur, keep Gibson’s attention!”

“Ugh… I got it. Sorry. I’m counting on you to save Mary!”

Arthur gradually slowed down and began talking to Gibson. Meanwhile, we used this opportunity to approach Mary while the kingdom’s soldiers acted as a barrier, making sure Gibson didn’t notice us.

“Gibson! Why?! Why did you betray us?!”

“Arthur, please calm down. I haven’t betrayed you. You see, I’m not Gibson.”

Gibson’s figure on horseback was enveloped in light. When the light subsided, a young woman stood there. She had vibrant red hair and golden eyes, and her face had a charming, cute expression. Her attire and equipment were different from Gibson’s.

“You… are you Mimura? Why is the Grim Reaper here? What did you do with Gibson!?”

She’s the Grim Reaper an S-rank adventurer… and she’s a woman?

“I regret to inform you… Gibson has passed away.”

“Passed away?… Th-that’s ridiculous.”

“I’m truly sorry. It was an extremely confidential quest. I can’t reveal the details, but I can assure you that I’ve completed the quest.”

Huh…? What does she mean? Does that mean she killed Gibson? She talks about it so casually… like it’s someone else’s business, but… it’s true.

“Ah, no, no. I mustn’t forget. Mary-san, even if I don’t kill her, will there be an additional reward?”

Mimura, as she’s called, took out a folded piece of paper from her pocket and checked its contents.

“Yes, that’s right. There will be an additional reward if I kill Mary-san, but I don’t hold any grudges against her. So…”

She said this and walked to Mary, pulling the short sword out of her abdomen without hesitation.

In that instant, blood gushed from Mary’s wound, and her body convulsed.

Arthur’s face contorted, and he trembled as he spoke.

“Stop… please stop…”

Without changing her expression, Mimura raised the short sword overhead.

“Mary-san, please wait there for a moment. Your beloved big brother will be with you soon. Thank you very much.”

And then… the sword was swung toward Mary’s neck…

…An emotionless blade pierced her neck, cutting through the skin. Furthermore, it attempted to cut through the slender, soft muscles.

In that moment, a burnt smell filled the air, and a dull sound that vibrated the air was heard, followed by a flash of red light.

The red flash blew away the blade that was about to sever Mary’s neck along with its owner.

“Phew… I made it just in time.”

I synchronized my movement with Mimura focusing her consciousness on Mary and used my ‘Router’ skill to move towards Mary. Then, I used a lightsaber to slash her torso and sent that guy flying.

I succeeded in separating Mary from her.

…Wait a moment.

When I cut her body, she was blown away… she wasn’t severed?

I saw Mimura lying on the ground where she had been blown away.

Then, as if nothing had happened, Mimura suddenly got up and touched her abdomen and the burnt and torn part of her clothes.

No way… The place I cut was only slightly reddened, and there wasn’t any blood.

Could it be!?

“You suddenly slashed, that’s so cruel. Well, I guess this is what real warfare is like. Thanks to Mary-san, I almost died.”

Mimura smiled at me and then examined my entire body from the bottom up.

“That sword… a lightsaber! Could it be, are you Takumi-san? Wait a moment…”

Mimura took out a folded piece of paper from her pocket again and began to check its contents.

“I knew it. Takumi-san is also a target for the quest… and anotherworldly person of the same generation as me! How did you make that weapon!? I have so many things I want to ask. Well, at worst, if I get it from you, that would be fine. Consider it a drop item, something the quest target drops, and anyone who defeats it can pick it up, right? Yes, I’m looking forward to this.”

This person is the Grim Reaper… an S-rank adventurer who was reincarnated around the same time as me.

She took no damage from my attack… It must be the effect of Mary-san’s skill, ‘Magic Sheath’s Protection.’

And Mary-san is on the brink of death because she couldn’t use ‘Magic Sheath’s Protection,’ or maybe it stopped working.

…If that’s the case, then if I consider that this person stole Mary-san’s skill, ‘Magic Sheath’s Protection,’ everything adds up.

This is bad. She’s an extremely dangerous enemy. The last person I want to get involved with.

“Takumi, we’re okay here. We’re heading to a safe place. Just a little more, please.”

“…Understood. I’ll buy some more time.”

I want to get out of here right away, but I have no choice but to deal with this.

“Mimura-san, you’re also from another world, right? Do you have a reason for siding with the Elf tribe? Or are you aiming to defeat the Demon Lord?”

“Oh, I understand what you want to say. Don’t worry. I don’t have any preconceived notions about Elves being good and Demons being evil. I don’t care which race is good or bad. In the end, I’ll properly rebuild this world, you know?”

What is she talking about…

“Between you and me, otherworldly people are a nuisance for me. They have partial knowledge, you see. So, it’s probably best if you exit my story. After all, I’m the hero of this world!”
