Chapter 80: The Holy Dragon Is Born!
While we waited in the secure guest room, Her Majesty the Queen entered. Her dignified presence made me straighten instinctively. Rosalia gripped my sleeve.
“I’ve heard what happened,” Her Majesty said. “Chloe will receive an appropriate punishment later.”
Her smile was dark enough to frighten me.
“Please, anything but a spanking,” Chloe pleaded.
So even an eight-year-old princess could still be disciplined that way. Apparently, the threat was extremely effective.
“Perhaps I should ask Julius to administer it for me,” Her Majesty teased.
“What?”
Chloe’s expression briefly brightened before she forced it flat.
“Why did you look pleased?” Her Majesty asked.
“I didn’t.”
Perhaps she was simply relieved that her mother was joking. Caro nevertheless gave her a suspicious look. This conversation was becoming dangerous.
“May I begin, Your Majesty?” asked an eager voice behind the Queen.
“Yes. My daughter’s lively expression made me forget myself. Children, this is Mars, a scholar who has spent many years researching the holy dragon.”
“I’m honoured to meet you.”
A middle-aged man in a fine dark-green robe bowed. His gaze repeatedly returned to the egg attached to my hands.
“According to the report, you discovered the Holy Dragon Egg. If so, my research may be useful.”
“Master Mars, can you make it release me?”
“The egg won’t leave your hands?”
His excitement increased dramatically. He had me tilt and invert my palms, but the egg remained fixed.
“Extraordinary. This matches the legend precisely. The Holy Dragon Egg can be hatched only by a chosen person. Once that person receives it, the egg won’t leave their hands until it hatches.”
How inconvenient. Eating might be manageable, but bathing and using the lavatory would become impossible.
“Then Julius will require assistance until the dragon is born,” Her Majesty said lightly.
“Assistance?” Chloe repeated.
“Someone would have to help him eat, wash, and manage everything else.”
Chloe went crimson. The Queen was clearly teasing her again. I suspected the servants would handle any genuine difficulty.
“How can I hatch it?” I asked quickly, before the jokes became worse.
“The egg absorbs mana through the chosen person’s palms. Once filled, it should hatch.”
That was exactly what I needed to hear. I already knew the method from Appraisal, but acting without explanation would have prompted questions.
“Then I’ll pour mana into it now.”
“Wait,” Chloe said. “Will that be safe for you?”
She was worried, but I wanted this resolved immediately.
As I channelled mana, cracks spread across the shell and light shone through them.
“Julius, that’s an enormous amount of mana,” Caro warned.
I had forgotten she could see the flow. Later, I would have to persuade her not to discuss my reserves.
The cracks widened.
“It’s hatching.”
With a sharp pop, the shell broke apart and warm radiance filled the room.
“Kyu!”
When the light faded, a fluffy creature slightly larger than a ball rested in my palms. Its size seemed impossible compared with the egg. Had it been compressed inside?
The game’s holy dragon had been covered in soft fur, and perhaps this was simply its infant appearance.
It resembled a puppy with a slightly elongated neck. Two horns rose from its head, and a thick tail extended behind it. Its entire body was wrapped in cloudlike white fur. Tiny wings were almost hidden along its back.
“It’s adorable,” every girl in the room cried at once.
Startled by their voices, the baby dragon leapt against my chest.
It was undeniably cute.
“This is unquestionably an infant holy dragon,” Mars said. “Every feature matches the surviving records.”
He immediately began sketching. His notes would probably become an important historical source.
I placed the creature on the table once it calmed, but it remained pressed against my hand. I felt uncomfortably like a parent.
Surely not.
“May I touch it?” Chloe asked.
“I want to as well,” Rosalia said.
“I suppose so.”
I wasn’t certain I had the authority to grant permission. The dragon belonged to the royal family, did it not? I had hatched it, so my role should now be complete.
I looked towards Her Majesty, hoping for confirmation.
“Julius, may I stroke it too?” she asked.
That wasn’t the answer I wanted.
Apparently taking my silence as consent, everyone gathered around and gently petted the baby holy dragon. Even Mars joined them, declaring that he must preserve the sensation in writing for future generations.
His dedication was impressive, although I was beginning to worry about him.
More importantly, the dragon still refused to move away from me.
What exactly had I become responsible for?

Cute!
